    Anatomical Differences In Brain

    Studies show that the hypothalamus is the largest and most consistent sex difference ever found in male rodents and humans. Hypothalamus is a small structure in the brain that controls reproductive physiology and behavior.

    However, in the cerebrum, the largest region of the brain, scientists found a sex difference in the corpus callosum. In the 20th and 21st centuries, scientists found that this region is larger in women, and others also said that they only found certain parts that are bigger. Nonetheless, it received much attention and was suggested that it could be the cause of sex differences.

    But regardless of sex, small brains have a proportionally larger corpus callosum, and studies conducted about it are often inconsistent. The same goes for the cerebral region, which makes explaining brain differences based on the brain’s anatomy have not been fruitful.

    Sex differences in the brain are real, but they are not what you might think. Theyre not about who is better at math, reading a map, or playing chess. Theyre not about being sensitive or good at multi-tasking, either. Sex differences in the brain are about medicine and about making sure that the benefits of biomedical research are relevant for everyone, both men and women.

    You may be surprised to learn that most animal research is done in males. This is based on an erroneous view that hormonal cycles complicate studies in female research animals, and an assumption that the sexes are essentially the same down at cellular and molecular levels. But these beliefs are starting to change in neuroscience. New research shows that some fundamental molecular pathways in the brain operate differently in males and females, and not just by a little. In some cases, molecular sex differences are all-or-nothing.

    Recognition that male and female brains differ at a molecular level has the potential to transform biomedical research. Drugs act on molecular pathways. If those pathways differ between the sexes, we need to know how they differ as early as possible in the long process of developing new medicines and treatments for disease.

    Female Brains Are Busier

    For the 2017 brain imaging study at Amen Clinics, the team analyzed 80 areas of the brain. In 70 of those regions, female brains showed significantly more activity than male brains. Overall, women have much busier brains compared with men. In problem-solving, women tend to harness several areas of the brain while men rely on a more localized effort.

    Neuroscientists are beginning to integrate ideas about culture into their research, according to Fine, who says shes feeling positive about the direction science is going.

    In her new book about women in science, British journalist Angela Saini speaks to Paul Matthews, a neuroscientist at Imperial College London who agrees with Joel and others, saying, Theres a lot of variability in individual brains. In fact, the anatomical variability is much greater than we ever realized before. So the notion that all people of the male sex have a brain that has fixed characteristics that are invariant seems less likely to me. In fact, so much less likely that I think the notion of trying to characterize parts of the brain as more male-like or more female-like actually isnt useful.

    Regarding the question of whether certain traits that we call male or female are determined by biology or socialization, Joel says she isnt sure why scientists or the public are so captivated by it. The question doesnt interest me, because we cant answer it, she says.

    Its also irrelevant in terms of the way society should operate, she says. For example, if a child cant read, we give them extra lessons and find ways to help them improve. We dont say, its biologic so it must be natural and good for the child, says Joel. Likewise, we dont celebrate aggression just because it is natural.

    In Favor Of Males Or Females In G Factor

    Research, using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale , that finds general intelligence in favor of males indicates a very small difference. This is consistent across countries. In the United States and Canada, the IQ points range from two to three points in favor of males, while the points rise to four points in favor of males in China and Japan. By contrast, some research finds greater advantage for adult females. For children in the United States and the Netherlands, there are one to two IQ point differences in favor of boys. Other research has found a slight advantage for girls on the residual verbal factor.

    A 2004 meta-analysis by Richard Lynn and Paul Irwing published in 2005 found that the mean IQ of men exceeded that of women by up to 5 points on the Raven’s Progressive Matrices test. He argued that there is a greater male advantage than most tests indicate, stating that because girls mature faster than boys, and that cognitive competence increases with physiological age, rather than with calendar age, the male-female difference is small or negative prior to puberty, but males have an advantage after adolescence and this advantage continues into adulthood.

    At some point or another, most books about the brain come back to the story of Phineas Gage. Gage was a railroad worker in the 19th century. In an unfortunate 1848 accident, a large steel spike was driven through his eye and out the other side of his head, taking some of his brain with him . Amazingly, Gage survived the accident with much of his faculties intact. What did change was his personality, which, by many reports, became more aggressive and belligerent. Gages doctor wrote up his case, arguing that it suggested civilized conduct was localized in a particular part of the brain specifically, the part he had lost.

    These technologies have not always lived up to the hype. The mechanics and statistics of processing fMRI imaging data have turned out to be far more complex than initially imagined. As a result there were many false claims made about which parts of the brain controlled different aspects of behavior or actions. The best, or at least funniest, example of this was a paper that showed how cutting-edge statistical analysis of fMRI made it possible to identify parts of the brain that responded differently to happy or sad faces. Sounds good, until you learn that the subject for this experiment was a dead fish.

    According to a study of the human brain before birth, that is, in the prenatal area, American researchers have obtained magnetic resonance images of pregnant mothers in the second and third trimesters, with a resolution sufficient to obtain images of the brains of babies within of the uterus .

    The differences between male and female brains have turned out to be larger than previously thought, because these differences appear to be reduced in the postnatal environment, that is, after birth.

    How Gender Stereotypes Led Brain Science

    Several things went wrong in the early days of sex differences and brain imaging research. With respect to sex differences, there was a frustrating backward focus on historical beliefs in stereotypes . Studies were designed based on the go-to list of the robust differences between females and males, generated over the centuries, or the data were interpreted in terms of stereotypical female/male characteristics which may not have even been measured in the scanner. If a difference was found, it was much more likely to be published than a finding of no difference, and it would also breathlessly be hailed as an at last the truth moment by an enthusiastic media. Finally the evidence that women are hard-wired to be rubbish at map reading and that men cant multi-task! So the advent of brain imaging at the end of the 20th century did not do much to advance our understanding of alleged links between sex and the brain. Here in the 21st century, are we doing any better?

    Seeing the life-long impressions made on our plastic brains by the experiences and attitudes they encounter makes us realise that we need to take a really close look at what is going on outside our heads as well as inside. We can no longer cast the sex differences debate as nature versus nurture we need to acknowledge that the relationship between a brain and its world is not a one-way street, but a constant two-way flow of traffic.

    How Our Brains Differ

    The neuroscience literature shows that the human brain is a sex-typed organ with distinct anatomical differences in neural structures and accompanying physiological differences in function, says UC-Irvine professor of neurobiology and behavior Larry Cahill, PhD. Cahill edited the 70-article January/February 2017 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience Research the first-ever issue of any neuroscience journal devoted entirely to the influence of sex differences on nervous-system function.

    Brain-imaging studies indicate that these differences extend well beyond the strictly reproductive domain, Cahill says. Adjusted for total brain size , a womans hippocampus, critical to learning and memorization, is larger than a mans and works differently. Conversely, a mans amygdala, associated with the experiencing of emotions and the recollection of such experiences, is bigger than a womans. It, too, works differently, as Cahills research has demonstrated.

    Discoveries like this one should ring researchers alarm buzzers. Women, its known, retain stronger, more vivid memories of emotional events than men do. They recall emotional memories more quickly, and the ones they recall are richer and more intense. If, as is likely, the amygdala figures into depression or anxiety, any failure to separately analyze mens and womens brains to understand their different susceptibilities to either syndrome would be as self-defeating as not knowing left from right.

      In a previous article, we talked about how men and women have distinct perspectives and often approach and interpret events differently. It’s not that one is better than the other theyre just different. This is certainly no earth-shattering revelation.

      Just to continue on this theme, we decided to take a look at the research as to what might be underlying these differences. There’s a debate going on in the scientific community as to whether or not the unique characteristics of men and women have a physiological basis.

      The male brain is about 10 percent larger on average, but size doesn’t matter here. After all, elephants have brains that are three times larger and have more neurons than humans, but we don’t see them doing brain surgery, and it’s not just because they don’t have fingers.

      Some researchers argue that the brains of men and women are wired differently. The male brain is wired from front to back, with few connections across the two hemispheres. Women, on the other hand, have more wiring from left to right, so the two hemispheres are more inter-connected.

      Without getting into the neurological details, researchers propose that these wiring differences result in men and women having different strengths. So, while we mentioned that one sex is not better than the other overall, each is better, on average, in certain respects. Here are some of the findings:

      This debate is likely to continue for quite some time. At least that gives researchers something to do.

      Womens Brains And Inflammation

      Inflammation can occur in a variety of forms. Whether a harmful bacteria or virus enters your body, you scrape your knee, or you have a tooth abscess, each of these events signals the bodys defenses to kick into high gear. A similar first- line defense exists inside the brain, where cells called microglia are on constant patrol. They trigger inflammation to defend brain tissue against things that shouldnt be there, including viruses, bacteria, cancer cells, and Alzheimers plaques. Once their mission is complete, the immune system calls them off, and all calms down and returns to normal.

      Except when it doesnt. Sometimes, for various reasons, this inflammatory response cant manage to shut itself off, and chronic inflammation ensues. Unlike the acute inflammation that follows a sudden infection or injury, the chronic kind produces a steady low-grade overfiring that when left unattended long term can contribute to the development of many diseases.

      At the same time, low-grade inflammation is a behind-the-scenes player for many of the medical risk factors for dementia weve encountered so far, including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and concussions, as well as hormonal imbalanceswhich are all pretty bad news for womens brains. What to do?

      For many people, keeping inflammation in check comes down to commonsense basics: avoid things that increase inflammation, and practice those things that are known to decrease it instead. These include:

      How Exactly Is The Male Brain Wired In Comparison With The Female One

      Id like to share the results of one particular study in more detail.

      Having spent countless hours in workshops and having studied more than 1,000 brain scans, scientists came to a conclusion that confirms the old common belief stating that the male brain works in a different way than the female one.

      The map of the neural circuit of the average female brain contains a larger number of connections between the left and right hemispheres, contrasted with the male one, where the connection in regions between the back and the front of the brain is predominantly stronger.

      Ragini Verma, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, speaking at the Guardian, admitted that the big surprise was that the findings essentially confirmed stereotypes.

      That is, men are wired for perception and coordination, while women have enhanced social skills and memory, which explains why they better cope with multitasking.

      According to Verma, the left side of the brain is responsible for logical thinking while the right one for intuitive thinking. So, when a task engages both hemispheres, women are doing it better.

      It also explains why women are better listeners. Another impressive discovery was that male and female brains are essentially complementary.
