MRI scans have even been used to screen people for depression! For those of us in the medical field, brain MRI scans are often used in conjunction with other diagnostic techniques, such as electroencephalographs , magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography scans to determine brain activity in patients who show certain signs or symptoms of disease or other disorders.
If a doctor suspects that a patient is exhibiting certain mental symptoms, one way that he or she can go about choosing which brain MRI test to use is by looking for certain things in the images. Patients with milder psychiatric problems, such as depression or social anxiety, may be able to benefit from MRI brain scans that provide information on how their brains process visual information. Doctors may choose to look for signs of abnormalities in the brain scans themselves, or they may choose to look for information on how that particular brain area processes the information. Either way, though, an effective test like this will give important information.
What Are The Long Term Effects Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Over 80 percent of patients with mild traumatic brain injury will recover quickly and fully with no long-term effects. Less than 20 percent of patients may have some longer lasting, or even permanent, symptoms. Persistent headaches, memory loss, anxiety, and depression are the most common lasting problems.
How Mri And Ct Scans Work And Their Limitations
MRI and CT scans function best at identifying macroscopic lesions. Although it’s improving, the technologies are often unable to pinpoint microscopic injuries to neurons and neural connections often associated with mild brain injuries.
A computerized tomography scan takes a series of X-rays images of different angles around your body, which is then processed and compiled by a computer into a single picture. Unlike an X-ray, CT scans provide more detailed information about your bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues. A Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues within the body. MRIs are non-invasive and create amazingly detailed images of internal tissues, even more so than a CT scan. But if a person has metal inside their body from shrapnel or medical device, or is afraid of enclosed spaces, an MRI cannot be used.
CT scans and MRIs are wonderful tools to diagnose injuries but they don’t always catch every injury. There are a few reasons for this:

UCSF/SFGH Researchers Say Better Diagnosis Would Help Prediction of Outcomes and Guide Treatment
Hospital MRIs may be better at predicting long-term outcomes for people with mild traumatic brain injuries than CT scans, the standard technique for evaluating such injuries in the emergency room, according to a clinical trial led by researchers at UCSF and the San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center .
Published this month in the journal Annals of Neurology, the study led by UCSF neuroradiologist Esther Yuh, MD, PhD, followed 135 people treated for mild traumatic brain injuries over the past two years at one of three urban hospitals with level-one trauma centers: SFGH, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin, Texas. The study was called the NIH-funded TRACK-TBI .
All 135 patients with mild traumatic brain injuries received CT scans when they were first admitted, and all were given MRIs about a week later. Most of them had no detectable signs of injury on a CT scan, but more than a quarter who had a normal CT scans also had detectable spots on their MRI scans called focal lesions, which are signs of microscopic bleeding in the brain.
