What Does Propranolol Do
Propranolol is a beta-blocker; a type of medicine used to treat a number of different health conditions, including heart problems, anxiety, migraines and high blood pressure.
Propranolol 10 mg tablets have many uses. We prescribe it to treat the physical symptoms and effects of social and situational anxiety, such as sweating, flushing, trembling and a fast heartbeat.
Propranolol slows down your heart rate, making it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body.
There are different strength dosages and different forms of Propranolol . Depending on the health condition that needs treating, you will be prescribed a certain course of treatment by your doctor or pharmacist.
Anxiety And Insomnia Medications
Benzodiazepines, a class of medications used to treat anxiety or insomnia, comprise another group that has been linked with cognitive difficulties. Although these medications are truly a blessing for some individuals immobilized by anxiety, their use can be accompanied by sedation and mental slowing. A recent study even suggested that prolonged use of benzodiazepines might be a risk factor for later dementia, although experts have questioned the significance of this finding and clinicians continue to prescribe anti-anxiety medications such as lorazepam or sleeping pills such as temazepam and consider them very beneficial when used properly.
A Fifth Type Of Medication That Affects Brain Function
Opiate pain medications. Unlike the other drugs mentioned above, opiates are not on the Beers list of medications that older adults should avoid. That said, they do seem to dampen thinking abilities a bit, even in long-term users. As far as I know, opiates are not thought to accelerate long-term cognitive decline.
- Commonly prescribed opiates include hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine, codeine, methadone, hydromorphone, and fentanyl.
- Tramadol is a weaker opiate with weaker prescribing controls.
- Many geriatricians consider it more problematic than the classic Schedule II opiates listed above, as it interacts with a lot of medications and still affects brain function. Its a dirty drug, as one of my friends likes to say.
How Do Ssris Help In The Treatment Of Anxiety
Unlike the beta-blockers, SSRIs try to reduce the cause of anxiety and other related disorders.
Listed below are common ways in which SSRIs are used in the treatment of anxiety and other related disorder.
Participating in therapy and self-help activities is an important part of the recovery process. Self-help strategies include breathing exercises and relaxation skills. A qualified therapist can provide cognitive behavioral therapy , which involves developing new ways of thinking and behaving in order to cope with anxiety and related disorders.
Studies indicate that CBT alone is not as beneficial without SSRIs. CBT is a long-lasting aid in managing symptoms, but medication can assist in rapidly reducing symptoms, allowing for a greater ability to participate and benefit from psychotherapy techniques. When symptoms are under control, one may feel ready to practice exposure therapy, the gradual introduction of phobic situations to slowly build up a sense of confidence when faced with fear. For many people with panic disorder, exposure therapy is only possible with the support that SSRIs provide.
Treating Co-Occurring Issues
Substance abuse issues are also related to anxiety disorder. SSRIs can be safely prescribed in such instances. Unlike sedatives, SSRIs are non-addictive. Since dependence is not an issue, SSRIs are prescribed for longer durations of time, increasing the chances of improvement.
Does Propranolol Make You Tired
Tiredness is one of the more common side effects of Propranolol. You may experience this as drowsiness or fatigue. Some users also experience insomnia and other sleeping problems, which exacerbates the tiredness.
If you feel tired or dizzy after taking Propranolol, you should lie or sit down until you feel better.
If you are taking Propranolol for the very first time, you may feel dizzy and tired, so your doctor will probably suggest taking it just before bedtime. As your body gets used to Propranolol, this side effect should start to wear off.
You should also avoid combining Propranolol and alcohol as this will exacerbate any tiredness or dizziness you are feeling and make you feel worse.
Stopping Propranolol 10 Mg
Hi there, does anyone have any experience with coming off proranolol 10mg? I take 1 10 mg tablet in the morning for the last 3 months. I would like to come off them. I asked my GP how to stop it and he said that I can stop anytime without reducing the dosage.
I find it a bit strange since there is a warning on the pack to not to stop it just like that but to reduce first. I don’t trust my GP 100% cause there were cases before he advised me opposite to what other doctor and the pharmacist said so just wondering if anyone can share their experience. Thanks!

I was on proponal for 11 months and around the the 9 month mark I had a weird thing happen I was awake but my brain wasnt and I couldnt remember my daughters name. After that it happened again it was throwing me in a panic attack so I called my doctor and said I could stop it I was only on 5 mg a night. After I stopped it I could breathe better and the memory problem stopped. Ive been off it for 7 days now and I feel like myself again. No memory loss anymore.

Dementia And Essential Tremor
As weve mentioned throughout this post, patients with essential tremor are more at risk for dementia than the general population. Though it is not classified as a disease by the Center for Disease Control, dementia is characterized as a series of symptoms, namely, the inability to think, remember, or make decisions to the extent that it disrupts daily activities. Alzheimers is the most common form of dementia.
Scientists Now Know That Memory Loss As You Get Older Is By No Means Inevitable
Is memory loss interfering with your daily life?
Most people are familiar with some of the things that can impair memory, including and drug abuse, head injuries, stroke, sleep deprivation, severe , aging or a symptom of conditions like Alzheimers disease. What many do not know is that episodes of forgetfulness can also be side effects of prescription drugs.
Dr. Armon B. Neel, a geriatric pharmacist with the AARP, claims:
Scientists now know that memory loss as you get older is by no means inevitable. Indeed, the brain can grow new brain cells and reshape their connections throughout life.
Dr. Neel promotes on the importance of better understanding the effects of prescription medications. Commonly prescribed drugs that can induce in some patients include:
Many of the listed drugs are recommended for short-term use due to possible abuse and addiction, while others are needed to control chronic conditions. However, effective non-drug therapies may be a healthier choice, and in many cases can be tried before medications.
Other suspect medications include aids, anti-seizure drugs, incontinence drugs, and antihistamines. If you are experiencing memory loss, one of these commonly prescribed drugs may be the culprit. Consult your doctor.
Essential Tremor And The Cerebellum
The houses more than 50% of the neurons in your brain. It is also involved in several information-processing functions, including the way we use our sensory systems and how we exhibit cognition, language, and emotions. The cerebellums expertise in information-processing also plays an important role in mental and motor dexterityin other words, how we use our brain and motor skills.
A 2012 NIH study examined the relationship between the cerebellum and essential tremor. The study supported that cerebellar functions, like motor tasks, were affected by ET; researchers also found evidence that other cerebellar skills, such as memory, abstract reasoning, and language processing, were negatively impacted.
Ultimately, the 2012 study concluded that in addition to the abnormal tremors rhythms, like shaky hands, essential tremor also impacts non-motor aspects that are controlled by the cerebellum. This research encouraged medical professionals to reexamine ETs classification as a pure motor disease; as a result, its become an important element of essential tremor treatment.
Propranolol Vs Propranolol Er Side Effects
Propranolol comes in two different forms that work just a little bit differently. Regular immediate release propranolol must be taken multiple times per day to make sure its effective. Propranolol extended-release only needs to be taken once per day because it slowly releases propranolol hydrochloride into the body.
Propranolol ER is available to purchase as 60 mg, 80 mg, 120 mg, and 160 mg capsules. The standard dose of propranolol ER is 80 mg taken once per day, which is higher than the dose of immediate-release propranolol because its only taken once.
Some people like the extended-release version because they only have to worry about taking their medication once per day. However, a doctor will be able to determine which version is best for someone based on their individual needs and symptoms.
Actavis Elizabeth manufactures the generic version of propranolol extended-release. The brand name of propranolol HCl ER is Hemangeol. Generic versions of medications are usually cheaper than brand-name versions, but they work the same and are equally effective.
The side effects of regular propranolol and propranolol extended-release are almost identical. The same warnings, precautions, and drug interactions for propranolol also stand for propranolol ER.
New Findings On Statin
A study in JAMA Internal Medicine may help to explain the controversial connection between cholesterol-lowering medications and memory loss. Researchers scrutinized health records of more than 11 million people who saw their primary care doctors from 1987 to 2013. They compared reports of memory problems by three groups of people:
483,000 who were prescribed a statin to lower their cholesterol
26,000 who were given another type of cholesterol-lowering drug to lower cholesterol, such as a fibrate or niacin
483,000 who didn’t take any cholesterol drug.
People who took any kind of cholesterol druga statin or some other typewere nearly four times more likely to report memory loss right after starting on the drug, compared with people who didn’t take any kind of cholesterol drug.
Does this mean all cholesterol drugs, not just statins, affect memory? The researchers say this is possible. However, it is unlikely, given the fundamental differences in how statin and nonstatin cholesterol drugs work.
Another possible explanation is a well-known phenomenon called detection bias. People who start taking a new prescription drug are, not surprisingly, more likely to talk to their doctors and therefore have a chance to report any changes in memory they may notice. In other words, it’s more likely that the reported memory problems were coincidences, and not caused by taking cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Drugs That May Cause Memory Loss
Are you having trouble remembering things? One of these meds may be the problem.
For a long time doctors dismissed forgetfulness and mental confusion as a normal part of aging. But scientists now know that memory loss as you get older is by no means inevitable. Indeed, the brain can grow new brain cells and reshape their connections throughout life.
Most people are familiar with at least some of the things that can impair memory, including alcohol and drug abuse, heavy cigarette smoking, head injuries, stroke, sleep deprivation, severe stress, vitamin B12 deficiency, and illnesses such as Alzheimers disease and depression.
But what many people dont realize is that many commonly prescribed drugs also can interfere with memory. Here are 10 of the top types of offenders.
1. Antianxiety drugs
Why they are prescribed: Benzodiazepines are used to treat a variety of anxiety disorders, agitation, delirium and muscle spasms, and to prevent seizures. Because benzodiazepines have a sedative effect, they are sometimes used to treat insomnia and the anxiety that can accompany depression.
Examples: Alprazolam , chlordiazepoxide , clonazepam , diazepam , flurazepam , lorazepam , midazolam , quazepam , temazepam and triazolam .
Be sure to consult your health care professional before stopping or reducing the dosage of any benzodiazepine. Sudden withdrawal can trigger serious side effects, so a health professional should always monitor the process.
2. Cholesterol-lowering drugs

What To Do If You Or Your Relative Is On These Medications
So what should you do if you discover that your older relative or you yourself are taking some of these medications?
If its an over-the-counter anticholinergic, you can just stop it. Allergies can be treated with non-sedating antihistamines like loratadine , or you can ask the doctor about a nasal steroid spray. PM painkillers can be replaced by the non-PM version, and remember that the safest OTC analgesic for older adults is acetaminophen .
If you are taking an over-the-counter sleep aid, it contains a sedating antihistamine and those are strongly anticholinergic. You can just stop an OTC sleep aid, but in the short term, insomnia often gets worse. So youll need to address the insomnia with non-drug techniques.
You should also discuss any insomnia or sleep problems with your doctors its important to rule out pain and serious medical problems as a cause of insomnia but be careful: many of them will prescribe a sleeping pill, because they havent trained in geriatrics and they under-estimate the risks of these drugs.
If one or more of the medications above has been prescribed, dont stop without first consulting with a health professional. Youll want to make an appointment soon, to review the reasons that the medication was prescribed, alternative options for treating the problem, and then work out a plan to reduce or eliminate the drug.
Now go check out those medication bottles, and let me know what you find!
Novelty Enhances Memory Persistence And Remediates Propranolol
A novel event can reverse memory impairment caused by interfering reconsolidation with a noradrenergic -blocker.
Immediate-early gene, zif268, is not required for protein synthesis-dependent reconsolidation of appetitive spatial memory.
A novel event can reverse the memory impairment caused by blocking reconsolidation with the noradrenergic beta-blocker propranolol.
Effects Of Propranolol On Markers Of Synaptic Plasticity
The hippocampus is essential for the formation and storage of memories, which is in turn mediated, at least in part, by hippocampal synaptic plasticity. Reversal of memory dysfunction by propranolol in Tg2576 mice might be attributable to changes in synaptic plasticity. Several different markers of synaptic plasticity were selected to be analysed: Akt, as part of one of the most critical pathways in regulating cell survival; synaptophysin, as a widely used marker to estimate synaptic density; brain-derived neurotrophic factor , which helps the survival of existing neurons and facilitates the growth of new neurons and synapses.
There was a main effect of genotype and treatment regarding phosphorylated Akt levels normalized to total Akt . Synaptophysin levels were also increased by propranolol .

How To Avoid Propranolol Side Effects
The best way to avoid propranolol side effects is to follow manufacturer instructions and any instructions given by a medical professional.
Propranolol doses will depend on a patients age, individual symptoms, and medical history, but the standard dose is 40 mg taken twice per day. Regular immediate-release propranolol tablets should be taken on an empty stomach to ensure good absorption into the body. Propranolol extended-release tablets can be taken with or without food, but should always be taken consistently, either with or without food, to ensure consistent doses are absorbed by the body. Also, taking propranolol ER with food can help prevent an upset stomach and remember to NOT chew or crush these ER tablets or the entire dose may be absorbed too quickly. Propranolol is commonly taken once in the morning and again before bedtime, but this may change based on a healthcare providers recommendation.
A missed dose of propranolol can also cause side effects. Taking a missed dose soon after remembering it will help prevent side effects from occurring or worsening. However, if its almost time to take the next dose, then the patient should not take an additional dose to make up for the missed amount.
Propranolol Restored Cognitive Function In Tg2576 Mice
Two-way ANOVA indicated a significant genotype×treatment interaction on the measure of discrimination between new and familiar objects . Further analysis revealed that Tg2576 animals showed a significant learning impairment that was reversed by propranolol treatment .
Chronic treatment with propranolol reverses the learning deficit in Tg2576 transgenic mice. Novel object recognition test, data shown as discrimination index ; Fear conditioning, data shown as percentage of freezing over the 2 min test. Two-way analysis of variance significant interaction: p< 0.05, p< 0.01 significant differences vs. non-transgenic saline-treated; p< 0.05, p< 0.01 significant differences vs. Tg2576 saline mice.
The effects observed in NORT do not seem to be associated to differences in locomotor activity, as there was no difference in the total amount of time spent exploring two identical objects between non-transgenic and Tg2576 groups in the NORT . Further supporting this fact, total distance travelled in the open field was not affected by either genotype or treatment.
Mice were next given the fear conditioning test , another hippocampus-dependent learning task, where Tg2576 mice are impaired. As shown in Fig. 1b, Tg2576 mice that received the propranolol showed a freezing response similar to that of the age-matched non-transgenic mice and much more than saline-treated Tg2576 animals .
Why Does Essential Tremor Impact Cognitive Function
Essential tremor most often affects an individuals motor skills, which are controlled by the nervous system. With essential tremor, daily tasks like brushing your hair and teeth or holding your arms outstretched can be extremely difficult, but from where does the connection between essential tremor and cognitive impairment stem?
The nervous system regulates movement and motor skills, equilibrium, and the five senses, but its also responsible for thinking processes, awareness, and consciousness levels. In total, the nervous system comprises the brain, the spinal cord, and all of the nerves in the body.
While ET has traditionally been associated with its physical symptoms, like active and stress tremors, researchers have more recently found a connection between ET and mild cognitive impairment, memory loss, and dementia. In a study of essential tremor patients, reported that 25% had prevalent dementia, and 8.7% developed incident dementia. The cognitive issues with essential tremor are still being examined, but the connection likely has to do with the cerebellum.
Data Analysis And Statistics
Data were analysed by SPSS for Windows, release 15.0. Normality was checked by ShapiroWilks’s test . Behavioural and biochemical data were analysed by Student’s t test or two-way analysis of variance . Post hoc comparisons were conducted, if appropriate, using Tukey’s protected least significance test. Data are presented as mean±s.e.m. The level of significance for all analyses testing was set at p< 0.05.
What Are The Most Common Side Effects Of Propranolol
Below we have listed the more common side effects and symptoms that may occur as a result of taking Propranolol tablets for social anxiety.
The more common Propranolol 10 mg side effects include:
- Cold fingers and toes
- A slow or irregular heartbeat
- Raynauds syndrome
These symptoms will tend to go away as you continue taking the medicine and your body gets used to it. These more common Propranolol side effects do not usually need medical attention.
These side effects will also be very mild at low doses like the ones used for situational anxiety.
If you are concerned at all, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
What Is Propranolol
Propranolol is a generic medication also sold as brand-name Inderal LA, Inderal XL, InnoPran XL, and Hemangeol. It belongs to the beta-adrenergic blocking agents drug class, which helps the heart beat easier and with less force. Propranolol is only available by prescription. Here are some of the health conditions that the Food and Drug Administration has approved to treat:
- Arrhythmia: An irregular heartbeat thats too slow or too fast.
- Angina: Chest pain that occurs when blood isnt properly flowing to the heart.
- Tremors: Involuntary and rhythmic movement of the limbs, face, vocal cords, or head.
- Hypertension:High blood pressure due to the force of blood against artery walls being too high. High blood pressure levels are anything above 140/90. , a drug that combines propranolol with a diuretic, treats hypertension.
- Heart attacks: A heart attack happens when blood flow to the heart is blocked. Propranolol can help prevent and treat heart attacks.
- Migraine headaches: Migraines are extreme headaches that propranolol can help prevent. Researchers think that propranolol is good for migraines because it blocks the hormone adrenaline from causing a stress response in the body.
- Infantile hemangioma: A benign blood vessel tumor that can affect infants up to 5 months old.
