Experts are not sure what causes mad cow disease or vCJD.
The leading theory is that the disease is caused by infectious proteins called prions . In affected cows, these proteins are found in the brain, spinal cord, and small intestine. There is no proof that prions are found in muscle meat or in milk.
When a cow is slaughtered, parts of it are used for human food and other parts are used in animal feed. If an infected cow is slaughtered and its nerve tissue is used in cattle feed, other cows can become infected.
People can get vCJD if they eat the brain or spinal cord tissue of infected cattle.
The Dangers Of Eating Brain
For centuries, the Fore people of Papua New Guinea participated in a morbid funeral ritual. When one of the tribesmen died, his wife, sisters, and daughters would dismember him limb by limb, then eat his brain as a sign of respect. In the 20th century, the Fore began suffering from kurua brain disease that resembles mad cow disease.
More than 2,500 Fore died before researchers realized that ingesting human brains could cause the disease. Yet some Fore never developed kuru and seemed to be resistant to it. Scientists believed that a genetic mutation might have protected these Fore.
Simon Mead of the University College of London and his colleagues compared DNA samples from 152 Fore who died of kuru and 3,000 living Fore. More than 700 of the Fore in the sample participated in eating human brains before the practice was banned in the 1950s. The researchers found a variant of PRNP, the gene that makes prions. With kuru, malformed prions develop, causing a chain reaction that transforms the brain into a mush. A variation on codon 129, dubbed G127V, protected about 51 Fore from being susceptible to kuru. None of the 152 known kuru sufferers carried the variation.
“I hope it will become a textbook example of how evolution happens,” Mead says. This anti-kuru gene shows how the human body adapts to protect itself from impending danger.

What Is Mad Cow Disease And Does It Infect People
Mad cow disease is a fatal disease that slowly destroys the brain and spinal cord in cattle. It also is known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE.
People cannot get mad cow disease. But in rare cases they may get a human form of mad cow disease called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease , which is fatal.
This can happen if you eat nerve tissue of cattle that were infected with mad cow disease. Over time, vCJD destroys the brain and spinal cord.
There is no evidence that people can get mad cow disease or vCJD from eating muscle meatwhich is used for ground beef, roasts, and steaksor from consuming milk or milk products.
People with vCJD cannot spread it to others through casual contact.
People who have spent a lot of time in places where mad cow disease has been found are not allowed to give blood in Canada or the United States.footnote 1, footnote 2 This is to help prevent vCJD from spreading.
What Procedures And Tests Diagnosis Mad Cow Disease In Humans
A health-care professional would do initial testing similar to checking for dementia — looking for progressive deterioration of the patient’s ability to think and control movement.
- Certain lab tests may be performed to rule out other forms and causes of brain dysfunction. Individuals may have a complete blood count and liver function tests checked with a sample of their blood. The doctor may also check blood for evidence of a bacterial or other infection.
- More detailed lab tests might include blood testing of thyroid, B-12 and folate levels, and for certain types of sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and HIV, which may produce similar symptoms.
- Imaging such as an MRI or PET scan may be helpful.
- The doctor may perform an EEG to look at brain waves. Sporadic CJD typically is associated with some abnormalities on this test, and most cases of vCJD reveal abnormalities in the EEG, although these may not always be present.
- A brain biopsy may be taken. Although certain microscopic changes may be present on a brain biopsy to suggest CJD or vCJD, currently, the diagnosis of vCJD can only be confirmed with certainty following examination of the brain post mortem at the time of autopsy.
The doctor may ask about the person’s eating patterns if BSE transmission is suspected.
Is Mad Cow Disease Contagious And How Is It Transmitted In Humans
Mad cow disease has been experimentally transmitted among cattle and from cattle to monkeys who eat infected tissue in lab tests.
But the question remains: How do cattle develop BSE? Feed is the major route for transmission among cattle, according to veterinary medicine experts. When ranchers and farmers feed cattle with products made from other cattle or sheep, such as ruminant feed, they are recycling diseased animal protein in feed containing meat and bone meal, thus causing the disease in cattle. This practice has since been outlawed after the association of BSE with vCJD.
Prions may be transmitted among laboratory animals also through broken skin, suggesting the possibility of similar transmission to humans who contact infected tissue or products and who have broken skin.

There is no single test to diagnose vCJD. Doctors may think that a person has vCJD based on where the person has lived and the person’s symptoms and past health. Imaging tests, such as an MRI, may be done to check for brain changes caused by vCJD.

In December 2003, the first case of BSE in the United States was detected in a dairy cow in the state of Washington. Two further cases were reported in 2005 and 2006. Before that, a devastating major outbreak occurred in the United Kingdom in the 1980s, peaking in 1993. Because the suspected cause was a prion transmitted in meat and bone meal products fed to cattle there, the government banned the practice of feeding such products that may contain diseased tissue to animals in 1988. By then, however, infected cattle had already entered the human food supply. At the peak of this outbreak in 1993, almost 1,000 cases per week of infected cattle were reported the numbers have dropped dramatically since then, and currently, there are only about 10 infected cattle identified each year in the U.K. The BSE-related condition vCJD was first described in the U.K. in 1996. By 1996, several people in the U.K. and others who had lived there were identified with a variant form of CJD , and the cause was linked to eating meat from cattle infected with mad cow disease.
