Can You Recover From A Brain Aneurysm
A brain aneurysm indicates a weak area in the blood vessel wall of a human brain that balloons out or bulges. Once it comes to a specific size, it creates relatively higher chance to burst out. It may even cause leakage of blood and bleeding problems across the brain surface. Doctors may even call it subarachnoid hemorrhage because of the occurrence of bleeding from inner part of the brain.

Treating An Unruptured Brain Aneurysm
We have two different paths we can follow for a patient who has an aneurysm that hasnt burst, explains Dr. Ludwig.
Less common is a surgical treatment for brain aneurysms that requires opening the skull and making the repair. Both procedures are still done it just depends on specific characteristics of the aneurysm as to which surgery would be best, says Dr. Ludwig.

Is Clipping Or Coiling Right For You
Aneurysm clipping and coiling are effective and relatively safe options for resolving an aneurysm, but they arent equally appropriate for everyone. To determine which procedure is right for you, your doctors will consider a variety of factors, such as your age, overall health condition and the circumstances surrounding your aneurysm.
Because clipping surgery is an invasive procedure with a relatively long recovery time, it may not be appropriate for older, frailer people or for those with chronic health problems. But clipping can treat a wide variety of aneurysm types, and it can resolve an aneurysm with minimal chance for recurrence.
Coiling is minimally invasive, so it can be a safer choice for older patients and those with ongoing health concerns. This procedure can also treat aneurysms in locations that are difficult to access for clipping. But coiling may not be effective for aneurysms of certain shapes and sizes.

How Long Will My Brain Aneurysm Surgery Recovery Take
If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, your surgeon may have recommended a surgical procedure to prevent the aneurysm from rupturing and potentially causing dangerous bleeding within the brain.
Clipping and coiling are two of the most common procedures used to treat an unruptured brain aneurysm. Both are effective ways to prevent rupture by keeping the blood from flowing into the aneurysm, and your surgeon may recommend one or the other depending upon your particular case and individual needs. Because the surgeries themselves are different, your brain aneurysm surgery recovery will also vary depending on the procedure, as well as your individual situation.
Recovery In The Hospital
Right after surgery, you will be taken to the hospitals intensive care unit for monitoring while the anesthesia wears off. For at least six hours after the procedure, you will need to lie flat with your bandaged leg outstretched. During this time, staff will continue monitoring your vital signs and responses to check for complications from the ruptured aneurysm or from the procedure itself.
After a ruptured aneurysm, recovery from a coiling procedure typically involves a hospital stay of 14 to 21 days or longer, depending on issues caused by the rupture and any other factors that might affect your recovery, such as other health conditions.
During this time, staff will continue to monitor your recovery and watch for complications that can occur in the days and weeks after an aneurysm rupture and from the coiling procedure itself. These kinds of situations can include re-bleeding of the aneurysm, swelling of the brain, or vasospasm a sudden narrowing of the artery that can occur five to 10 days after an aneurysm rupture. If the rupture caused neurological problems such as speech, coordination or vision difficulties, you may also receive therapy and other support for managing these symptoms after you go home.

Surgery or the endovascular procedure can completely obliterate the aneurysm in most patients. In rare cases, aneurysms can recur. Depending on other health conditions and the type of treatment used, patients may be monitored every 2 to 5 years to ensure that the aneurysm has not recurred. Recovery can take 6 to 12 weeks or longer. If neurological and physical deficits exist, a supportive rehabilitation team can help to improve long-term recovery.
Post Craniotomy And Clip Placement Procedure Expectations
Patients underwent with craniotomy and clip placement surgical procedure require about 3 weeks to 6 weeks for complete recovery from the problem. If you experience bleeding in combination with brain aneurysm problem, your recovery period becomes relatively longer. Moreover, you may experience tired feelings for about 12 or more than 12 weeks.
If you experienced brain injury or stroke because of bleeding problems, you may likely face permanent problems in the form of difficulty in speech and thinking, numbness and muscular weakness.
Memory problems in patients are common, but they improve with time.
Patients may feel as confused and dizzy or their speech may become abnormal after clip replacement surgical procedure. However, if bleeding stops, these problems become better over the time.

Frontal Lobe Damage Treatment
Treatment for frontal lobe damage focuses on identifying the functions that have been affected by the brain injury and practicing those functions.
Its important to know, however, that frontal lobe damage can affect an individuals motivation and ability to participate in goal-directed behaviors such as rehabilitation. Additionally, they may not believe that they have any functional deficits from their brain injury to be working on . When this occurs, it can be challenging for frontal lobe brain injury survivors to participate in a rehabilitation program.
For this reason, cognitive rehabilitation and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy may need to be prioritized so that the individual can find long-term motivation to pursue other therapies. We will discuss these first.

What Is A Cerebral Aneurysm
A cerebral aneurysm is a weak or thin spot on an artery in the brain that balloons or bulges out and fills with blood. The bulging aneurysm can put pressure on the nerves or brain tissue. It may also burst or rupture, spilling blood into the surrounding tissue . A ruptured aneurysm can cause serious health problems such as hemorrhagic stroke, brain damage, coma, and even death.
Some cerebral aneurysms, particularly those that are very small, do not bleed or cause other problems. These types of aneurysms are usually detected during imaging tests for other medical conditions. Cerebral aneurysms can occur anywhere in the brain, but most form in the major arteries along the base of the skull.
Brain aneurysms can occur in anyone and at any age. They are most common in adults between the ages of 30 and 60 and are more common in women than in men. People with certain inherited disorders are also at higher risk.

What Is The Survival Rate And Prognosis For A Brain Aneurysm
Researchers estimate that about 6 million people in United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm, and about 10% to 15% of these people will have more than one brain aneurysm. Someone with an unruptured brain aneurysm has about a 1% chance of the aneurysm rupturing per year. Patients with giant aneurysms have a much higher risk of rupture. The survival rate for those with a ruptured brain aneurysm is about 60% . For those who survive and recover, about 66% have some permanent neurological defect. How well a patient responds to a brain hemorrhage depends on the size of the hemorrhage and the amount of swelling.
Some patients recover completely. Possible complications include stroke, loss of brain function, seizures, or side effects from medications or treatments. Death is possible, and may quickly occur despite prompt medical treatment.

How Do Doctors Diagnose A Brain Aneurysm
A brain aneurysm may cause symptoms such as headaches or double vision. Many times, they cause no symptoms at all. Because of this, doctors often are first alerted to a brain aneurysm through an imaging scan you might get for a completely different reason.
Doctors use multiple tests to confirm a brain aneurysm diagnosis:
- MRA: A magnetic resonance angiogram scan is a type of MRI scan that’s specifically for blood vessels.
- CTA: This is a special type of CT scan that focuses on the blood vessels.
- Angiogram: For a traditional angiogram, doctors insert a catheter into your body to see your blood vessels more clearly. It’s the gold standard for diagnosing brain aneurysms because it gives a 3-D view of an aneurysm, offering precise details that help determine the best treatment for you.
What Causes Brain Aneurysms To Bleed
Researchers havent discovered exactly what causes an aneurysm to leak or rupture, which causes bleeding in or around the brain. But anything that increases your blood pressure can be dangerous. Higher blood pressure makes blood push harder against blood vessel walls. Things that may increase blood pressure include:
- Ongoing stress or a sudden burst of anger or other strong emotion.
- Working hard to lift, carry or push something heavy like weights or furniture.
- Known high blood pressure that is not treated appropriately with medications.

Recovery From A Coiling Procedure
For some patients, your neurosurgeon will recommend you undergo a coiling procedure. Coiling is endovascular, meaning that the surgeon accesses the aneurysm by navigating through the blood vessels of your body. In this procedure, the surgeon will enter via your leg, rather than through the skull.
If you undergo coiling, you can expect your brain aneurysm recovery time to be slightly shorter, provided there are not complications and you are admitted in a non-emergency situation. You will typically only spend a day or two in the hospital for monitoring, but the first six to 24 hours of that will require you to lay flat on your back in your bed. Patients whose aneurysms have ruptured may spend in the range of three weeks in a hospital setting, depending upon the circumstances.
Once you are discharged, you can expect to spend from three to seven days under restrictions. Your doctor will give you specific instructions depending upon your situation, but you will likely be home from work for about a week, with instructions to avoid driving or lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds for three days and to be sure to drink plenty of water in order to flush out the dye from the procedure.
Within approximately a week, you will be able to resume all of your normal daily activities, as advised by your physician. You will likely take pain-reducing medications after your surgery, but your doctor may also recommend you take a blood-thinning prescription following your coiling procedure.
What Happens During A Brain Hemorrhage
When blood from trauma irritates brain tissues, it causes swelling. This is known as cerebral edema. The pooled blood collects into a mass called a hematoma. These conditions increase pressure on nearby brain tissue, and that reduces vital blood flow and kills brain cells.
Bleeding can occur inside the brain, between the brain and the membranes that cover it, between the layers of the brain’s covering or between the skull and the covering of the brain.

What Treatments Are Available
Treatment may include lifesaving measures, symptom relief, repair of the bleeding aneurysm, and complication prevention. For 10 to 14 days following an aneurysm rupture, the patient will remain in the neuroscience intensive care unit , where doctors and nurses can watch closely for signs of renewed bleeding, vasospasm, hydrocephalus, and other potential complications.
Pain medication will be given to alleviate headache and anticonvulsant medication may be prescribed to prevent or treat seizures.
Determining the best treatment for a ruptured aneurysm involves many factors, such as the size and location of the aneurysm as well as how stable is the patients current condition.
Clotted blood and fluid buildup in the subarachnoid space may cause hydrocephalus and elevated intracranial pressure. Blood pressure is lowered to reduce further bleeding and to control intracranial pressure. Excess cerebrospinal fluid and blood may be removed with: 1) a lumbar drain catheter inserted into the subarachnoid space of the spinal canal in the low back, or 2) a ventricular drain catheter, which is inserted into the ventricles of the brain through a small hole in the skull.
If vasospasm is severe, patients may require an injection of medication directly into the artery to relax and stop the spasm. This is done through a catheter during an angiogram. Sometimes balloon angioplasty is used to stretch open the artery.
Are Brain Aneurysms Painful
Most people who have an unruptured brain aneurysm dont even know its there. It usually doesnt cause pain or any symptoms at all.
However, many smaller aneurysms are actually found when investigating causes of chronic headache. Researchers don’t know for sure if headaches are directly related to an unruptured aneurysm. One thought is that the swollen blood vessel is pressing into the nerves and membranes/tissues around the brain, causing the headache.
A sudden, severe headache can be a sign of a ruptured aneurysm. Rarely, you can also have a headache that lasts for days or weeks from an aneurysm thats leaking a small amount of blood. This type of lingering headache is called a sentinel headache. Its a warning that the aneurysm is about to burst.
