Beau Biden’s Death: 5 Facts About Brain Cancer

Joseph “Beau” Biden’s recent death from brain cancer at age 46 highlights the mysteries of this uncommon yet often lethal form of cancer.

It’s not clear what type of brain cancer Biden had, but in 2013, he had a small lesion removed from his brain, according to The New York Times. Some politicians thought Biden, son of Vice President Joe Biden and former attorney general of Delaware, might be well enough to run for governor of Delaware in 2016, but his health declined in recent weeks, The New York Times reported. After spending a week at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Biden died Saturday .

Brain cancer is a rare type of cancer, accounting for only about 1.4 percent of all new cancer cases in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute. Here are five facts about brain cancer:

There are many different types of brain tumors, and some types have low survival rates.

Brain tumors occur when cells in the brain grow abnormally , or when cancers spread from other parts of the body to the brain . The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine estimates that there are more than 120 types of primary brain tumors.

Some brain tumors are benign, meaning they are not made up of cancer cells. These tumors tend to grow slowly, and don’t often spread to other parts of the brain or body, but they can still be dangerous because they may press on brain tissue as they grow, causing problems that can be disabling, according to the American Cancer Society.

Trumps Plastic Surgery Digs Are Played Out

Its a well-known fact that Donald Trump turns to personally attacking those who oppose him, and the 45th President of the United States usually goes for the lowest hanging fruit: peoples looks.

In 2017, Donald went after Morning Joe anchor Mika Brzezinski and claimed that she was bleeding badly from a facelift the last time he saw her in a series of early morning bizarre tweets.

…to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year’s Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!

First of all…what? Second of all, even if Mika did undergo whatever cosmetic procedure she wanted to , its highly unlikely shed go walking around town, openly bleeding at a New Years Eve soiree.

Did Joe Biden Have Brain Surgery

In short, yes. Joe Biden did indeed undergo brain surgery on two occasions, both in 1988. In February of that year, he suffered from several episodes of increasingly severe neck pain. According to The New York Times, he attributed the pain to a pinched nerve and a viral infection.

One day, while he was alone in a hotel room, Biden felt a sharp, stabbing pain at the back of his neck. In his autobiography, Promises to Keep, Biden wrote that the pain was like nothing he had ever experienced and that he lay unconscious on the floor for five hours after it occurred. The next day, he went into a Delaware hospital for testing and was quickly rushed to Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

There, he underwent a lifesaving, six-hour surgical procedure to fix an aneurysm that had begun leaking at the base of his brain. In May of 1988, Biden underwent a second operation to repair another aneurysm on the opposite side of his brain. This second aneurysm had not caused any symptoms but was at risk of bursting.

Flashback: Brain Surgeon Told Biden He Had Less Than 50% Chance Of Being Completely Normal

Biden Announces Death Of Son, Beau, Of Brain Cancer

– Speaking at the White House National Conference on Mental Health on Monday, Vice President Joe Biden told a sometimes serious and sometimes jocular story about the two brain surgeries he needed in 1988 to deal with cranial aneurysms.

Biden told the White House audience they take a saw and they cut your head off and they literally had to take the top of my head off. He also recounted that as he was being wheeled into surgery he asked the neurosurgeon, What are my chances of getting off this table completely normal? The surgeon told Biden he had a better chance of livingand that that chance was in the 35 to 50 percent range.

The only totally un-chartered portion of the universe is the brain, Biden said in his White House speech. You know, as we used to say in the Senate, excuse the point of personal privilege here: I had two cranial aneurysms, and they literally had to take the top of my head off. I mean, they take a saw and they cut your head off, and go in to find the artery that is–one was leaking, the other that hadn’t, before it burst.

Those of you who are docs know every profession has their sick jokes, said Biden. The joke among docs is: How do you know someone’s had a cranial aneurysm? On the autopsy table. Only 20 percent of the people have it even get to the table.

What Joe Biden Learned From His Life

In early 1988, Joe Biden was devastated.

The then-Delaware senator had bowed out of the 1988 presidential race after questions were raised about the lack of attribution of quotes he used in a speech. Biden feared the scandal would tarnish his reputation, that people would consider him a cheat.

He was having regular headaches, requiring him to carry around a big bottle of Tylenol. He was also feeling pain in his neck.

And as chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Biden had recently overseen the contentious confirmation hearing for Robert Bork, followed by hearings for Anthony Kennedy.

In February of 1988, he suffered two life-threatening brain aneurysms. Biden has said the experience shaped him into the kind of man I want to be.

Biden also worked to preserve Delawares favorable corporate climate, legislated against domestic violence and crafted an anti-crime bill that provided for 100,000 more cops on the nations streets, banned assault weapons and mandated tougher penalties for drug dealers.

What Was Kamala Harris’ Relationship To Beau Biden

Kamala Harris‘ friendship with Joe Biden’s late son may have helped her chances at becoming his vice-presidential running mate in 2020.

After being sworn in as attorney general of California in 2011, she quickly became friends with Beau, who served as Delaware’s AG at the time.

Thinking of , and the entire Biden family today. Beau Biden was my friend. We were AGs together, and you couldnt find a person who cared more deeply for his family, the nation he served, and the state of Delaware. Four years after his passing, I still miss him.

Kamala Harris May 30, 2019

The two strategized together on cases and compared notes.

Former aides of both Harris and the younger Biden told the Associated Press that the pair often used each other as sounding boards, and even their staff formed close bonds.

Harris shared a touching tribute to her late friend on his fourth death anniversary in 2019 and said, “I still miss him.”

Joe Biden’s Brain Surgeon Is Defending Joe Biden’s Brain

Joe Bidenâs cancer nonprofit suspends operations indefinitely

Enough with the worrying, former Vice President Joe Biden’s brain surgeon says.

As some voters murmur that the gaffe-prone Democratic presidential candidate’s age is cause for extra concern this campaign cycle, Dr. Neal Kassell the man who performed surgery on Biden three decades ago following two brain aneurysms came out swinging for his former patient.

Kassell dismissed fears about the 76-year-old Biden’s mental faculties, noting that he’s “as sharp as he was 31 years ago” and assuring people that the hemorrhage and subsequent operations did not result in any brain damage. “I am going to vote for the candidate who I am absolutely certain has a brain that is functioning,” Kassell told Politico. “And that narrows it down to exactly one.”

Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, backed up Kassell. “Vice President Biden is in excellent physical condition,” he said. “He is more than capable of handling the rigors of the campaign and the office for which he is running.”

In fact, several experts told Politico that voters are placing too great an emphasis on the age of several candidates, particularly the five septuagenarians who are running, including Democratic candidates Biden and Sen. Elizabeth Warren , 70, and Sen. Bernie Sanders , 77, as well as 73-year-old President Trump and his lone Republican challenger, former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, who is 74.

Biden’s Medical History Not Scrutinized

This story was written by Andy Barr.

Soon after ending his first presidential bid that year, Biden, who had been suffering from what he thought were headaches and a pinched nerve, collapsed in a hotel room shortly after giving a speech on foreign policy.

In his book “Promises to Keep,” Biden says that he was unconscious for over four hours before he woke up in a hospital in Wilmington, Del. The senator was told that an artery was leaking blood into his brain and he was given his last rites by a priest. He was transferred to Walter Reed Medical Center where it was discovered that he had a second aneurysm on the other side of his brain.

Biden immediately underwent a four-and-a-half-hour operation to remove the leaking aneurysm. He had a second surgery in May to repair the other aneurysm and fully recovered after taking a seven-month leave from his seat as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Following the memorial service of Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who died in August of an aneurysm, Biden said, “I know it sounds corny, it almost sounds maudlin, but you know, here she was one day walking around, just like I was the next day.

“I woke up four hours later on the floor with a hemorrhage. In her case, the same thing happened, only she never made it back.”

“Once they’re dealt with, they’re dealt with,” Caputy said. “The likelihood that he would ever have any trouble is very small, even smaller than the general population.”
