Recently, I saw the movie Lucy starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman. If youre planning on watching it and dont want me to spoil it for you, then skip the next paragraph.
The general story is that a college student studying abroad gets abducted by a gang in Taipei and is forced to carry a bag of drugs that they implant in her abdomen. When the bag starts leaking its contents, CPH4 , the drug triggers rampant production of new connections between neurons giving Lucy access to the 90 percent of her brain that supposedly most of us never use.
The explosive brain growth makes her superhuman, and levitation, time travel, mind reading, learning Chinese in an instant, mentally controlling electronics, altering and generating new body parts, as well as high-speed car chases, and fight-to-the-death scenes follow.
Lucy is based on a lie
The director, Luc Besson, knew the idea that we only use 10% of our brainpower was wrong but went with it anyway. Hey, it IS science fiction. I get it, but the problem is that too many people accept this brain myth as a fact. According to a TED-Ed Animation, two-thirds of the public and nearly half of all science teachers still mistakenly believe this nonsense.

In fact, the myth of the 10% could have its origin, paradoxically, in something that William James wrote, considered the father of Psychology in the United States, and one of the most influential figures in this discipline in the world.
James wrote that most people only take advantage of a small part of their intellectual potential. But several popular book authors misrepresented his words.
One of them was Lowell Thomas, who in 1936 prefaced the best seller How to win friends and influence people, where it was said that we only use 10% of the brain, as explained in Research and Science by Scott Lilienfeld and Hal Arkowitz, psychologists from Emory and Arizona Universities, respectively.

Just as his god-like Vitruvius fed sweet, naive Emmet a bogus prophecy in The Lego Movie, The Washington Post points out Freeman’s latest character is once again doling out Hollywood falsehoods with authority in the summer thriller Lucy.
This time, the movie myth that needs busting is that human beings use only 10 percent of their brainsa “fact” Freeman cites while playing Professor Norman in the TV ads for Lucy, whose title character “is able to kick butt and take names because some drug made her a super-powered brainiac.”
But it’s pure science fiction that it takes a chemical cocktail to make humans use their entire brains. It turns out that we are all already giving it everything we’ve got, according to Dr. Barry Gordon, a professor of neurology at the School of Medicine and professor of cognitive science at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.
The Post refers to an interview with Dr. Gordon, published by Scientific American in 2008.
Gordon, a behavioral neurologist and cognitive neuroscientist, told Scientific American that “we use virtually every part of the brain, and that the brain is active almost all the time,” he said. “Let’s put it this way: the brain represents three percent of the body’s weight and uses 20 percent of the body’s energy.”
