Do You Lose Brain Cells When You Smoke Weed

Studies On Cannabis Use And Brain Activity

This Will Kill Your Brain Cells!

Many of the cannabinoids in cannabis are actually neuroprotective, according to Rae. “That means they turn on healthy cellular processes like antioxidation, rather than stimulating the cellular processes that lead to cell death. Being neuroprotective is what makes cannabis and its derivatives attractive targets as therapies for degenerative brain disorders like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, she said.

One 2020 literature review published in Molecular Neurobiology indicated that THC and CBD could potentially be therapeutic for individuals with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

A study performed on mice published in 2018 in Neurobiology of Aging showed that a very low dose of injected THC may trigger a reversal of age-related cognitive impairments. The positive effects lasted seven weeks.

On the other hand, one study published in 2020 in the journal Addiction Biology showed that the total size of the hippocampus, which is important for memory and learning, continues to get smaller with more frequent cannabis use Cannabis isn’t necessarily ‘killing’ brain cells, but there is clearly something that is not normal in the hippocampus of chronic cannabis users, according to Rae.

Can Brain Cells Grow Back After Smoking Weed

Can brain cells grow back after smoking weed?

  • Answer #1

u dont lose brain cells from smoking weed first of allsecond of all brain cells dont grow back

lol dont listen to what people tell u, its all misleading informationyou need to do your own research and see for urself

These are some of the comments I have copied from a forum

-pharmaceuticals are known to kill more people than illegal drugs

-marijuana is the number 1 cash crop in the worldit serves as a natural medicine and has many other usesthats why they prohibited it so big companies can make more profitthanks to “bad journalism”

-can also help aids patients, aids diminishes appetitehave them smoke a joint and they regain their appetite counteracting the illness

-no one can die from smoking cannabis and has been no known deaths compared to everything else including alcohol, tobacco, etc..

I myself have asthma and smoking opens up my airways making it easier to breathe with no side effectswhen medically legalized in my state I look foward to becoming a patient for prescription marijuana. 12 states have already legalized it along with other countries in the world and more followingmy job is to educate people that are not aware of the plants uses

    re-legalize!

-I did most of my research through websites, books, magazines, and the newsnorml.orghigh times magazineetc..

  • theres more to it than just getting highand I believe legalizing it would make this a better world to live in

-God bless the whole crop!

Can You Get Help And Treatment For Marijuana Addiction

Currently, you can get treatment for marijuana addiction or a marijuana use disorder. It may not be common but there are those who seek and benefit from treatment for it. Treatment options right now are most often centered around things like binge use. Binge use is when you are using a lot of a substance, especially in a short period of time.

Treatment also focuses on things like withdrawal. Studies show that withdrawal from marijuana is possible and it can lead to an increase in the side effects and symptoms we listed above. Aside from these two main pieces, the treatment also often tries to help with the feelings of preoccupation with using.

Part of addiction is the intense need or craving to use a substance. Addiction to marijuana is no different and some of that impacts the effectiveness of treatment and the potential for relapse. This means it is critical that care focuses on that as well.

Less common is the potential of pharmacological treatments for it. This would be treatments for marijuana use disorder that rely on medications to be effective. For other drugs of use like opioids, this type of treatment has been thoroughly proven as safe and effective. It is called medication-assisted treatment and has been around for a long time. For marijuana, however, it is not used and studies are still being conducted to determine the safety and effectiveness of it.

Durangos Open Sky Wilderness Therapy treats young people who face mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and addiction. Teens receive clinical treatment while living in nature, sometimes for months at a time. 5280 connected with Open Sky clinical therapist Brian Leidal to ask him about the impacts of cannabis he sees in his cohorts.Back to Top

5280: Do you often have clients experiencing addiction to marijuana?Brian Leidal: Yes. Clients I work with fall on a spectrum, ranging from mild to severe use. In order to determine if a clients use has become an addiction, I ask them about the frequency of their cannabis use, the types and concentrations of the cannabis they use, and the consequences of their use. The difference between dependence and addiction is consequences: For those clients who have become addicted, the consequences really pile up.

Withdrawal isnt the only thing we need to worry about with frequent THC use, right?Moderate to severe cannabis use is associated with reductions in two measures of intelligence and cognitive ability: working memory and processing speed. More research is needed to definitively state whether these reductions are permanent or temporary in adolescents or young adults. For adolescents who use cannabis, however, there are studies that show that these reductions are permanent and dont recover in adulthood, even if they stop using.

    Common Marijuana Myths Debunked

Contrary to popular belief, we dont have a limited supply of brain cells. Sure, the majority of them grow early in life, but some areas of the brain continue to grow them into adulthood and beyond a process called neurogenesis. The hippocampus is one of these areas, and its also among the most important areas of the brain, playing roles in memory, emotion, and learning. But as we grow older, a number of factors compete with neurogenesis and kill brain cells. No, theyre not smoking weed and drinking alcohol instead, theyre a little more common than you might expect. Here are seven of them.

    States Ok Marijuana Use

Grant’s analysis, published in the July issue of the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, comes as many states consider laws allowing marijuana to be used to treat certain medical conditions. Earlier this year, Maryland became the 10th state to allow marijuana use to relieve pain and other symptoms of AIDS, multiple sclerosis, cancer, glaucoma, and other conditions — joining Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington.

Medicinal marijuana is available by prescription in the Netherlands and a new marijuana drug is expected to be released in Great Britain later this year. In the U.S. and elsewhere, , a drug that is a synthetic form of marijuana and contains its active ingredient, THC, is available by prescription to treat loss of appetite associated with weight loss in AIDS patients.

Grant says he did the analysis to help determine long-term toxicity from long-term and frequent marijuana use. His center is currently conducting 11 studies to determine its safety and efficacy in treating several diseases.

“This finding enables us to see a marginal level of safety, if those studies prove that cannabis can be effective,” Grant tells WebMD. “If we barely find this effect in long-term heavy users, then we are unlikely to see deleterious side effects in individuals who receive cannabis for a short time in a medical setting, which would be safer than what is practiced by street users.”

How To Consume Cannabis The Smart Way

Moderation is the best way to ensure that you can safely enjoy marijuana and possibly even derive some brain-protecting effects. Rather than consuming cannabis daily, consider reducing your consumption and setting aside your favorite strain as a treat rather than a habit.

Choosing low-THC strains that have fewer psychoactive properties may also be a smarter way to enjoy cannabis. Some popular low-THC strains include Ringo’s Gift, Harlequin, Cannatonic, Pennywise, ACDC, and Sour Tsunami.

Finally, experimenting with smoke-free cannabis consumption methods may be better for your brain and will certainly be better for your lungs.

Marijuana use can cause or exacerbate symptoms of psychosis, which may include paranoia or hallucinations, according to Dr. Chiligiris. Individuals with certain genetic vulnerabilities may be at greater risk to developing psychosis with cannabis use, says Dr. Chiligiris. With higher potency THC available, including edibles, individuals may be at risk for more significant or earlier onset of mental health concerns such as psychosis. While this may not be the case for everyone, it is something to consider.

Heavy Marijuana Use Doesn’t Damage Brain

Analysis of Studies Finds Little Effect From Long-Term Use

July 1, 2003 — Long-term and even daily use doesn’t appear to cause permanent brain damage, adding to evidence that it can be a safe and effective treatment for a wide range of diseases, say researchers.

The researchers found only a “very small” impairment in memory and learning among long-term marijuana users. Otherwise, scores on thinking tests were similar to those who don’t smoke marijuana, according to a new analysis of 15 previous studies.

In those studies, some 700 regular marijuana users were compared with 484 non-users on various aspects of brain function — including reaction time, language and motor skills, reasoning ability, memory, and the ability to learn new information.

Despite how widespread the stereotype is, theres not a whole lot of evidence out there to either support or discredit the perception. Some believe this may have started with that infamous fried egg commercial , which started airing in the 1980s and depicted a fried egg as the encapsulation of a persons brain on drugs. Clearly, moderate use of cannabis will not fry the brain.

When it comes to evidence, there is a study that shows a connection between a smaller hippocampus and chronic cannabis use . Important for memory and learning, the hippocampus isnt directly related to brain cells, but it does show a negative connection between chronic cannabis use and an some impairment.

    Ways That Marijuana Affects Cognition

Any type of prolonged use of a psychoactive substance has the potential to cause neurological imbalances or impairmentand marijuana is no exception. The exact nature and extent of brain damage or other lasting effects can depend on a number of factors including:

    • Age
    • Strength of the dosage
    • Pre-existing mental illness or genetic predisposition to mental illness

Though marijuana may not be as overtly damaging as alcohol, meth, or cocaine , there are still plenty of undesirable cognitive side effects to be had.

  • It shrinks your brain
  • Numerous studies conducted over the past few decades have found that years of chronic cannabis use resulted in significant reductions in gray matter volume. Gray matter is the neuron-dense part of our brain, which is largely responsible for our capabilities to learn and otherwise function. One particular study found that heavy cannabis use resulted in shrinkage of hippocampus and amygdala parts of the brain which can significantly impact memory and learning.

  • It lowers your IQ
  • It can stunt brain development in young people
  • That same study found that the most significant factor was when those participants began using marijuana. Those who started smoking as adults rather than teenagers faced no decrease in IQ. Adolescents with their still-developing brains have the most to lose cognitively. Rather than killing off brain cells, however, marijuana impedes brain development, putting young adults at a number of neurocognitive deficits .

The active chemical in cannabis is called THC. It speeds up thinning of a rats version of the prefrontal cortex. THC binds to docking stations in brain cells. Those docking stations are called CB1 receptors. That CB is short for cannabinoid , meaning these receptors are ideally structured to respond to cannabis compounds known as cannabinoids. These include THC.

Rats given THC during adolescence lose some brain connections that would otherwise stick around into adulthood. This can alter the rodents behavior and memory. How much depends on the amount of THC and the animals age.

Researchers cannot study a direct link between THC and prefrontal-cortex thinning in people. But Albaughs colleagues found more CB1 receptors, on average, in the prefrontal cortex of 21 adult men than in other brain regions.

It is notable that the CB1-rich part in adult brains overlaps with the area that thins faster in cannabis-using teens. The overlap does not prove that cannabis causes the change. It does, however, add to evidence that it may.

    A window of vulnerability

It is critical to know if teen cannabis use may change how you function as an adult, says Ferland. Until more is known, many researchers recommend postponing any cannabis use until adulthood. They also suggest limiting its frequency and using only low-potency products.

    Moderation

While the conclusions of new research may differ, they agree that overuse of Marijuana, or any drug, is not healthy. While moderation applies to everything in life, drugs require slightly more moderation because of their tendency to cause adverse health effects. Results seem to suggest that moderate use even during development may have no detrimental effects, but waiting until a less sensitive time in mental development is advisable.

    How Weed Causes Memory Loss

ATTENTION WEED SMOKERS – Does Smoking Marijuana KILL Brain Cells or Cause Lung Cancer?

Scientists are still sorting out exactly how marijuana causes memory problems, but THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, appears to be the culprit.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, studies on rodents have shown that THC alters the hippocampus, the part of the brain that processes information and creates memories.

Deterioration of the hippocampus is what causes age-related memory loss, and THC appears to accelerate this process. Rats that received THC every day for eight months lost as many brain cells in the hippocampus as rats twice their age, according to NIDA.

Shedding more light on the process, a 2012 study cited in an article by the journal Nature found that THC weakens the connections between brain cells in the hippocampus.

Is It True That Smoking Weed Kills Brain Cells

Studies suggest that can cause cognitive deficits in adults who have used marijuana in childhood. However, the extent of impairment seems to depend on when you started using, how long youve used, and how much youre using now.

According to the NIH National Institute of Drug Abuse, researchers who study the link between marijuana and reduced IQ scores do not always get the same results. Therefore, their findings to date are inconclusive.

Its difficult to prove that marijuana causes IQ score deficiency when so many variables come into play. A host of other factors can reduce IQ scores just as easily as marijuana.

Lower scores can result from early childhood trauma, poor quality of education, genetics, age of initial cannabis use, and duration of use to name just a few.

Although there may be a correlation between lower IQ scores and marijuana use, theres just not enough information at this time to reliably ascertain whether marijuana lowers childrens IQ scores or not.
