Does Brain Tumor Cause Memory Loss

Don't Miss

If Youre Having Radiation Therapy To The Pelvis

Nutrition Tips for Brain Fog: Brain Boosting Foods to Help Fight Cancer-Related Brain Fog

Radiation therapy to the pelvis can cause side effects such as:

  • Bladder problems
  • Fertility problems
  • Changes in your sex life

You might also have some of the same problems people get from radiation to the abdomen, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation.

Bladder problems

Radiation to the pelvis can cause problems with urination, including:

  • Pain or burning sensations
  • Blood in the urine
  • An urge to urinate often

Most of these problems get better over time, but radiation therapy can cause longer-term side effects as well:

Clumsiness: Loss Of Balance And Coordination

Loss of balance, lack of coordination in the limbs, trouble swallowing, and numbness or weakness in one side of the body can be because of brain tumors.

If you are finding it difficult to maintain your balance while walking or having difficulty coordinating your hands and legs, it might be a symptom of brain tumor. This might be caused by a tumor in the cerebellum, the primary motor cortex, or the parietal lobe, all of which are responsible in different ways for the coordination of movements. A brain stem tumor that affects hearing can also contribute to loss of balance.

If your clumsiness can be attributed to numbness or weakness in one side of your body, it might be caused by a tumor in the parietal lobe. As the brain stem and the frontal lobe control muscular movements related to swallowing and speaking, respectively, patients also have trouble with these activities if they get tumors in these areas.

When To See A Gp

See a GP if you have these types of symptoms, particularly if you have a headache that feels different from the type of headache you usually get, or if headaches are getting worse.

You may not have a brain tumour, but these types of symptoms should be checked.

If the GP cannot identify a more likely cause of your symptoms, they may refer you to a doctor who specialises in the brain and nervous system for further assessment and tests, such as a brain scan.

Memory Loss: Recalling Or Registering Information

You may forget objects, people, places, or events you knew before you got the tumor or forget most information about events that happened ever since you got the tumor .

A brain tumor, especially in the frontal and the temporal lobes,9 may affect your memory of objects, people, places, or events in your life. The inability to recall any such information that you knew before you had the brain tumor is known as retrograde amnesia.

You might also not be able to remember anything that happened since the brain tumor developed. This inability to process new information is known as anterograde amnesia.10 Sadly, memory loss may be an effect of the treatment as well.

Types And Symptoms Of Cognitive Changes

Brain Tumor Can Be Cancerous, Know How

Discuss all of these possible causes of cognitive problems with your health care team. This will help you receive the correct diagnosis and treatment.

Mild cognitive changes

Sometimes survivors experience changes in their ability to remember or concentrate after they have chemotherapy. This typically mild form of cognitive change is sometimes called “chemo-brain.” Even these typically mild cognitive changes can disrupt daily living and the ability work. Symptoms include:

  • Difficulty concentrating and multi-tasking.
  • Inability to think clearly.

Neurocognitive effect of tumors

A tumor or cancer cells in the brain can injure healthy cells and can cause cognitive changes. Chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are treatments that are used to remove or destroy cancer cells. However, they can also damage some of the surrounding healthy cells either by direct administration or by impacting the brain indirectly. Depending on how much damage occurs, there could be noticeable symptoms such as with thinking, memory, speech, visual-spatial problems and behavior changes.

Acute onset cognitive changes

Acute onset cognitive changes are those that occur suddenly. Some acute changes, such as delirium, come and go with no real pattern. This can happen during treatment with certain medications and chemotherapy agents, and may be reversible. Symptoms include:

  • Fluctuating alertness and orientation.

Other cognitive changes in cancer survivors

  • Anxiety.
  • Severe nutrition problems.

About The Signs And Symptoms Of A Brain Tumour

Symptoms depend on where the tumour is in the brain and how slowly or quickly it grows. They may develop suddenly, or slowly over months or even years.

As a tumour grows, it can press on or grow into nearby areas of the brain. This can cause symptoms because it stops that part of the brain from working normally. Symptoms can also happen because the tumour is increasing the pressure inside the skull.

These symptoms can be caused by conditions other than a brain tumour. But it is important to get them checked by your GP straight away.

Lynettes Story: Recovering After Being Rear

Lynette was injured in a motor-vehicle accident when another driver rear-ended her car at highway speeds. My year has been one heck of a roller-coaster ride, she shared. She endured a year of pain, memory loss, cognitive difficulties, fatigue, and other symptoms.

It made her job insurance sales extremely difficult to perform. I was losing a lot of big contracts because I was messing up on the formulas and the addition, I was inverting numbers, that sort of thing, she said.

Emotionally, it really caused a lot of pain and anguish. Im to the point where I actually lost a marriage over the accident, she added.

Before fully committing to treatment, Lynette decided to come in for an fNCI scan to confirm what she was being told about her brain. At that point, I became incredibly emotional, because for the first time in my life, I realized that I had some hope. I thought I was going to have to live the rest of my life with a foggy brain and a massive headache all the time.

She felt the fog lift three days into treatment and finally feels like herself again. I feel like Ive had this rebirth of me again, she said. The technology that theyre using to reactivate your brain is just miraculous. Shes thrilled with the outcome and loved meeting staff and other patients.

What You Need To Know

  • Metastatic brain cancer is caused by cancer cells spreading to the brain from a different part of the body.
  • The most common types of cancer that can spread to the brain are cancers of the lung, breast, skin , colon, kidney and thyroid gland.
  • Metastatic brain tumors are five times more common than primary brain tumors .
  • Metastatic brain tumors can grow rapidly, crowding or destroying nearby brain tissue. Sometimes a patient may have multiple metastatic tumors in different areas of the brain.

If Youre Getting Radiation Therapy To The Brain

What causes memory loss in children? – Dr. Vykunta Raju K N

People with brain tumors often get stereotactic radiosurgery if the cancer is in only one or a few sites in the brain. Side effects depend on where the radiation is aimed. Some side effects might show up quickly, but others might not show up until 1 to 2 years after treatment. Talk with your radiation oncologist about what to watch for and when to call your doctor.

If the cancer is in many areas, sometimes the whole brain is treated with radiation. The side effects of whole brain radiation therapy may not be noticeable until a few weeks after treatment begins.

Radiation to the brain can cause these short-term side effects:

  • Headaches
  • Trouble with memory and speech
  • Seizures

Some of these side effects can happen because radiation has caused the brain to swell. Medicines are usually given to prevent brain swelling, but its important to let your cancer care team know about headaches or any other symptoms. Treatment can affect each person differently, and you may not have these particular side effects.

Radiation to the brain can also have side effects that show up later usually from 6 months to many years after treatment ends. These delayed effects can include serious problems such as memory loss, stroke-like symptoms, and poor brain function. You may also have an increased risk of having another tumor in the area, although this is not common.

Talk with your cancer care team about what to expect from your specific treatment plan.

Don’t Miss: Why Do People Get Brain Freeze

Vomiting: Persistent And Inexplicable

If you feel like throwing up or are actually throwing up without any problem in your digestive system, see if they occur with headaches or a problem in your vision.

Persistent vomiting or nausea, without any apparent reason, especially in the morning or when you change your position, can be a sign of a brain tumor. Vomiting is often a result of raised pressure inside the skull, which is why movement triggers it.

In a study on 111 brain tumor patients with primary and metastatic tumors, 40% complained of vomiting and nausea.5

This means that vomiting is a common sign across the various stages of brain tumor. It is usually thought to be a symptom of a tumor in the cerebellum. However, if it presents without other symptoms, we often misdiagnose vomiting as a symptom of a problem in the digestive system.

Increased Pressure On The Brain

Common symptoms of increased pressure within the skull include:

  • new, persistent headaches which are sometimes worse in the morning or when bending over or coughing
  • feeling sick all the time
  • drowsiness
  • vision problems such as blurred vision, double vision, loss of part of the visual field , and temporary vision loss
  • epileptic fits which may affect the whole body, or you may just have a twitch in one area

Don’t Miss: Do Humans Really Only Use 10 Of Their Brain

Meth Damages The Brain Permanently

For 20 years, scientific evidence has shown that long-term use of meth depletes supplies of dopamine by damaging dopamine receptors in the brain.24 Studies indicate that this brain damage can be permanent. Long-term meth users may develop life-long problems with verbal skills, memory, and may even develop Parkinson‘s disease, an incurable nervous disorder with symptoms of trembling hands and extreme muscle stiffness.6, 11

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse , animal studies show as much as 50 percent of the dopamine-producing cells in the brain can be damaged after long-term exposure to relatively low levels of methamphet-amine. In other animal studies, a single high dose of the drug has been shown to damage nerve endings in the dopamine-containing regions of the brain. The nerve endings do not die, but do not grow back to their original sizes. Researchers also have found that serotonin and norepinephrine-containing nerve cells may be damaged as extensively.7, 8 9 17, 24, 29

It is often difficult to compare animal studies to humans because very high doses of drugs are used in animal studies. However, scientists using brain-imaging techniques have studied the brains of human meth users. They have discovered that

even three years after long-term meth users had quit using the drug, their dopamine neurons remained damaged.7

Ways To Manage Memory Or Concentration Problems

11 Causes Of Short

Its important for you or a family member to tell your health care team if you have difficulty remembering things, thinking, or concentrating. Here are some steps you can take to manage minor memory or concentration problems:

  • Plan your day. Do things that need the most concentration at the time of day when you feel best. Get extra rest and plenty of sleep at night. If you need to rest during the day, short naps of less than 1 hour are best. Long naps can make it more difficult to sleep at night. Keep a daily routine.
  • Exercise your body and mind. Exercise can help to decrease stress and help you to feel more alert. Exercise releases endorphins, also known as “feel-good chemicals,”which give people a feeling of well-being. Ask what light physical exercises may be helpful for you. Mindbody practices such as meditation or mental exercises such as puzzles or games also help some people.
  • Get help to remember things. Write down and keep a list handy of important information. Use a daily planner, recorder, or other electronic device to help you remember important activities. Make a list of important names and phone numbers. Keep it in one place so its easy to find.

How Fertility Might Be Affected

For women: Talk to your cancer care team about how radiation might affect your fertility . Its best to do this before starting treatment so you are aware of possible risks to your fertility.

Depending on the radiation dose, women getting radiation therapy in the pelvic area sometimes stop having menstrual periods and have other symptoms of menopause. Report these symptoms to your cancer care and ask them how to relieve these side effects.Sometimes menstrual periods will return when radiation therapy is over, but sometimes they do not.

See Fertility and Women With Cancer to learn more.

For men: Radiation therapy to an area that includes the testicles can reduce both the number of sperm and their ability to function. If you want to father a child in the future and are concerned about reduced fertility, talk to your cancer care team before starting treatment. One option may be to bank your sperm ahead of time.

There Are Two Types Of Brain Tumors

Primary and secondary brain tumors. Primary tumors arise from either the brain coverings , cells of the brain, glands or the nerves. The exact causes have not been determined.

We will describe some of the more common brain tumor symptoms but again it is important to remember that just because you are dizzy or have a headache it doesn’t necessarily mean you have a brain tumor.

There are certain risk factors, such as age, certain predisposing conditions such as neurofibromatosis, exposure to radiation or immunosuppressant conditions .

The abnormal growth destroys normal brain cells by either applying pressure on various brain parts or via inflammation.

Secondary brain tumors are those that originate in other body parts but later spread to the brain.

Meningiomas and gliomas constitute the most common primary brain tumors in adults. The tumors most common in children are medulloblastoma or germ cell tumors.

Are Mild Concussions Serious

Brain Tumor Treatment | Advances Over 10 Years: Carlos Luceno’s Story

Even if youve been told that youve only experienced a mild concussion, all concussions should be considered serious events. In most cases its true that a single concussion is unlikely to cause permanent brain damage. However, even having a mild concussion puts you at an increased risk of another concussion. In addition, if you were to experience another concussion before your concussion symptoms have fully gone away, you could be at greater risk of permanent damage or even death if you have another concussion.

Does Masturbation Cause Memory Loss

Healthy levels of masturbation don’t cause memory loss. However, compulsive masturbation can have adverse effects on your memory. Physical exhaustion is one of the results of excess masturbating. That, in turn, hampers attentiveness and can negatively impact memory.

Compulsive masturbation leads to the brain being drained of the hormone acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter. The body replaces acetylcholine with stress adrenaline that can cause memory loss and a lack of focus. Hence, excessive masturbation can cause memory loss.
