What Do We Know About Cardioprotection By Helium

Already in 2007, it was shown that inhalation of three times 5min of 70% helium before a subsequent coronary artery occlusion and 3h of reperfusion significantly reduced infarct size in rabbit hearts . Using this approach, the authors employed several different inhibitors to block divergent signalling pathways in this helium induced cardioprotection, e.g. the so-called reperfusion injury salvage kinase pathway. By using a mitochondrial permeability transition pore opener , a crucial role of the mPTP in helium cardioprotection was established . Subsequently, other key mediators like opioid receptors were identified to be involved in helium conditioning . In addition, the non-selective nitric oxide synthase inhibitor N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester abolished cardioprotection by helium, while a selective inducible NOS inhibitor or a selective neuronal NOS inhibitor did not diminish helium-induced preconditioning .
