If you think that you dont have enough time to start reading, youre wrong. How do I know? Because we make time for the things that are important to us. How much TV do you watch? How much time do you spend trawling the web? You could easily replace reading with those activities.

If youre worried about the cost of books, check em out at the local library. Most libraries take advantage of the interlibrary loan system, so you can check out nearly any book on the planet. I also use Worldcat to find libraries in the area that might have my book.

Theres really no excuse to start reading on a regular basis. The benefits far outweigh the costs, and more knowledge never hurt anybody.

Reading Improves Your Memory

Reading creates new memories. With each of these new memories, your brain forms new connections between neurons called synapses and strengthens existing ones. As you read you are memorizing and recalling words, ideas, names, relationships, and plots. Youre essentially training your brain to retain new information.

Q: You’ve said that teachers and your own father called you “lazy and stupid” and that you spent a lot of time covering up your difficulties with learning. What were some of the ways you tried to cover up the fact that reading was extremely difficult for you? What signs should parents or teachers look for if they suspect their child or student is “masking” a learning difficulty?

A: I definitely was the class clown. If the teacher read a story out loud, and one of the characters was a hunter shooting ducks out of the air, I became that hunter. I got behind my desk, made the class laugh, and was sent to the principal.

Here it is. A child with a learning challenge is embarrassed by their inability to keep up. They already feel bad. All they need is support, support, a little more support, and then some support. And, ALL of that support must be positive.

Q: Although you endured the pains of growing up with dyslexia, you endured and succeeded in life. What qualities did you have that helped you overcome your learning disability and how can adults help children develop and cultivate those qualities?

A: If there was one word that I would pass on to all children, it would be tenacity. What your school abilities are, and how you perceive your dreams are two very different things. I was not very good at spelling, math, reading, geography, history I was, however, great at lunch. That being said, my dream of being an actor never wavered.

A Silent Epidemic Of Head Trauma

In 2014, there were approximately 2.87 million visits to the ER for TBI-related injuries in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Thats not counting the hundreds of thousands, or perhaps millions, of unreported incidents of head trauma, including undiagnosed concussions. Why are there so many brain injuries? There are several reasons, including:

  • Many people think the brain is rubbery and fixed within the skull, but it isnt. In reality, your brain is soft, about the consistency of soft butter, tofu, or custardsomewhere between egg whites and gelatin. It floats in cerebrospinal fluid and is housed in a very hard skull that has many sharp bony ridges. As such, it is easily damaged.
  • Blows to the head can cause the brain to slosh around, slamming into the hard ridges in the skull. This can cause bruising, broken blood vessels and bleeding, increased pressure, lack of oxygen, damage to nerve cell connections, ripping open of brain cells that spill out proteins that cause inflammatory reactions.
  • On top of that, your pituitary gland sits in a vulnerable part of your skull, and its often hurt in head injuries, causing major hormonal imbalances.
  • Often, brain injuries that dont result in a loss of consciousness go undetected and are never treated.
  • Sadly, most people dont think about their brain or actively care for it. They are careless and engage in behaviors and activities that put their brain at risk of damage.

Emory University conducted a study in 2013 that found that reading a novel can leave a lasting effect on the brain.

This study shows how reading books can help your brain connect with the rest of your body and help you feel more.

    Why You Should Embrace Books

    Science has found that reading is essential for a healthy brain. We already know reading is good for childrens developing noggins: A study of twins published by the Society for Research in Child Development found that kids who started reading at an earlier age went on to perform better on certain intelligence tests, such as analyses of their vocabulary size.

    Other studies show that reading continues to develop the brains of adults. One 2012 Stanford University study, where people read passages of Jane Austen while inside an MRI, indicates that different types of reading exercise different parts of your brain. As you get older, a more recent study suggests, reading might help slow down or even halt cognitive decline.

    Words on a page can also improve your emotional intelligence. A 2016 overview of the issue demonstrated that fiction readers tend to have a well-developed sense of what psychologists call theory of mind. This is the ability to attribute mental states to yourself and to others, and to grasp that other people may have different desires, emotions, and thoughts. As a result, regular readers show more empathy for other people.

    Stronger Analytical Thinking Skills

    Have you ever read an amazing mystery novel, and solved the mystery yourself before finishing the book? If so, you were able to put critical and analytical thinking to work by taking note of all the details provided and sorting them out to determine whodunnit.

    That same ability to analyze details also comes in handy when it comes to critiquing the plot determining whether it was a well-written piece, if the characters were properly developed, if the storyline ran smoothly, etc.

    Should you ever have an opportunity to discuss the book with others, youll be able to state your opinions clearly, as youve taken the time to really consider all the aspects involved.

    Reading Improves Memory And Concentration

    While the brain isn’t a muscle, it still benefits from exercise. Similar to how lifting weights makes our bodies stronger, reading is a cognitively demanding process that can strengthen memory and concentration.

    When humans read, we create a “mental map” of written text. This mental map helps us process words we are reading and aids in knowledge recall and memory. Romanoff says a regular reading routine helps the brain “practice” mental processes that contribute to memory functioning.

    “Our brains also mentally process written words as if we were writing them,” Romanoff says. “These processes require mental effort and concentration. With continued reinforcement, there is a greater capacity for memory functioning.”

    A 2013 study of elderly men and women found people who participated in mentally challenging activities like reading and writing had a slower rate of memory decline earlier and later in life compared to those who did not engage in such activities.
