Blood Sugar And Memory
Focusing on the hippocampus — the area of the brain associated with memory and learning — Small and colleagues previously identified a section that was most associated with age-related memory decline.
In their newly published study, the researchers looked at how this area, known as the dentate gyrus, is affected by changes typically seen with aging, such as rising cholesterol, body weight, and blood sugar.
Human and animal imaging studies confirmed that rising blood sugar was the only change directly associated with decreased activity in the dentate gyrus.
Because blood sugar levels tend to rise with age, the finding suggests that monitoring and taking steps to lower blood sugar as we grow older may be an important strategy for preventing age-related cognitive decline for everyone, not just people with diabetes, Small tells WebMD.
The study was funded by the National Institute on Aging, the American Diabetes Association, and the McKnight Brain Research Foundation. It appears in the December issue of the journal Annals of Neurology.
“Beyond the obvious conclusion that preventing late-life disease would benefit the aging hippocampus, our findings suggest that maintaining blood sugar levels, even in the absence of diabetes, could help maintain aspects of cognitive health,” Small says in a news release.

Too Much Sugar Linked To Reduced Memory Brain Volume
The sugar-brain connection isnt just a theory anymore. Theres some fairly convincing and reproducible evidence that too much sugar in the diet is linked to cognitive and brain deficits. Two new papers, both deriving data from the long-running Framingham Heart Study, bear this out. One study finds that sugary drinks are linked to pre-clinical Alzheimers disease: Poor memory and reduced brain volume in certain areas. The other study finds that artificial sweeteners arent much bettertheyre linked to a greater risk of stroke and of dementia. So it seems like were damned if we do and damned if we don’t, at least when it comes to sweetened drinks.
The first of the studies, from Boston University School of Medicine, followed more than 4,200 people, periodically testing them for memory and cognition, and scanning their brains with MRI to measure volume. The participants also filled out questionnaires about their food intake, including sugary drink consumption . Sugary drinks are a great way to study excess sugar, since they have almost no redeeming nutritional qualities, like protein or fiber to slow their absorptionit’s like a straight drug to the system.
It turned out that people who consumed more sweetened drinks had poorer memory and reduced overall brain volume , compared to people who didnt drink sugary drinks.

One study of 38 women found that those who consumed more saturated fat relative to unsaturated fat performed worse on memory and recognition measures .
Thus, it may be that the relative ratios of fat in the diet are an important factor, not just the type of fat itself.

Fuzzy memory? Your sugar intake might be to blame.
Sugar-packed soft-drinks aren’t just bad for our teeth and waistline, new scientific theories suggest they may also be affecting our memory.
Recent Australian trials suggest that sugary drinks appear to have a significant effect on memory in animals. We dont yet know why, and we dont know if humans are affected in the same way.
“But we have seen it so consistently that its a problem,” says Dr Kieron Rooney, one of the researchers involved.
“Were talking about an animal wandering around a cage which does not quite remember where something in it was 10 minutes ago.”
Several labs are reporting similar results.
But if you cut sugar from your diet, how long does it take for your memory to return to normal?
About seven weeks, according to new, intriguing but very early stage research.
Dr Rooney has led a trial at the University of Sydney, although the first results have not yet been published.
His latest publication with Professor Robert Boakes, in Physiology and Behaviour, looks at the effect quitting sugary drinks has on memory in rats.
The team gave rats unlimited sugar-water for eight weeks.
In a test of their ability to recall the location of things in their cages, the sugar-laden rodents performed significantly worse than those who did not have the soft-drink substitute.
Then the animals were switched onto water for seven weeks.
Foods That Induce Memory Loss
Unfortunately, the foods that hamper memory are common staples in the American diet. White breads, pasta, processed meats and cheeses, all of these have been linked to Alzheimers disease. Some experts have even found that whole grain breads are as bad as white breads because they spike blood sugar, which causes inflammation.
Heres a list of foods linked to increased rates of Alzheimers disease:
- Processed cheeses, including American cheese, mozzarella sticks, Cheez Whiz and Laughing Cow. These foods build up proteins in the body that have been associated with Alzheimers.
- Processed meats, such as bacon, smoked turkey from the deli counter and ham. Smoked meats like these contain nitrosamines, which cause the liver to produce fats that are toxic to the brain.
- Beer. Most beers contain nitrites, which have been linked to Alzheimers.
- White foods, including pasta, cakes, white sugar, white rice and white bread. Consuming these causes a spike in insulin production and sends toxins to the brain.
- Microwave popcorn contains diacetyl, a chemical that may increase amyloid plaques in the brain. Research has linked a buildup of amyloid plaques to Alzheimers disease.

Sugars Effect On The Hippocampus
Using brain scans, researchers found that the same people with elevated blood sugar levels also had smaller hippocampuses, a part of the brain pivotal to memory.
Experts arent exactly sure how blood sugar levels and the hippocampus are related. Flöel says blood sugar levels may impair the function of the hippocampus specifically, or they may damage small and large blood vessels in the brain, leading to decreased blood and nutrient flow to brain cells.
The research doesnt mean that swapping a soda for a glass of water will immediately improve your memory, but in the long term, it could help extend sharp memory into your later years.
These general recommendations may beneficially influence memory and brain structure, in theory even at a younger age, Flöel said. However, the changes induced by slightly elevated glucose levels need to accumulate in the brain over longer time periods , so younger people will probably not directly benefit, but their lifestyle choices at a younger age will make them more or less likely to develop memory problems in later life.
