More than three hours a day could mean brain fade by middle age.
When I kick back to watch a show, I tell myself I’m just going to watch one episode. But 45 minutes later, I’m watching another. And then another. For the rest of the day. There are a lot of things that TV and chilling can lead to, but among the less fun? Maybe more cognitive decline over time.
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco checked in with 3,247 people for 25 years, starting when they were young adults. Every five years, they asked participants to estimate how much TV they watched daily. Every two to five years, the researchers looked at how much physical exercise people got. At the end of the 25 years, when the participants were in their 40s and 50s, they all took three tests that measured their memory, focus, and mental and physical quickness.
People who got little exercise or watched at least three hours of TV a day did worse on tests measuring cognitive focus and speed than those who got more exercise or watched less TV, according to the study, published in JAMA Psychiatry on Wednesday.
“Then people who had both low physical activity and high TV had even worse performance. It was an even bigger effect,” says Dr. Kristine Yaffe, a psychiatrist at UCSF and senior author on the study.

In any case, its safe to conclude that two hours per day of television for children is plenty even if it is high-quality programming.

What About Screen Violence
Decades of reports suggest that screen violence can have a significant effect on kids behavior. A 1982 study by the National Institute of Mental Health says children viewing violence on television become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others it also suggests they may be more fearful of the world around them and more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways toward others. Does Television Rot Your Brain New Evidence From The Coleman Study
We use heterogeneity in the timing of television’s introduction to different local markets to identify the effect of preschool television exposure on standardized test scores later in life. Our preferred point estimate indicates that an additional year of preschool television exposure raises average test scores by about .02 standard deviations. We are able to reject negative effects larger than about .03 standard deviations per year of television exposure. For reading and general knowledge scores, the positive effects we find are marginally statistically significant, and these effects are largest for children from households where English is not the primary language, for children whose mothers have less than a high school education, and for non-white children. To capture more general effects on human capital, we also study the effect of childhood television exposure on school completion and subsequent labor market earnings, and again find no evidence of a negative effect.

When I was seventeen years old, I developed chronic sinus infections that eventually led to surgery.
During this six month period, I was sick and usually stuck at home with nothing to do. Aside from playing countless hours of Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, I also watched a ton of TV. My parents also really like television, so our cable package included every channel, which meant I was often rotating between movie channels, Cartoon Network, TV Land, Nickelodeon, The-N and then tuning in to Skinomax, which is late night Cinemax .
I dont have cable now, and I miss it. I know a lot of people are streaming because cable is very expensive, and websites like Netflix make it possible for people to pay a few bucks a month for a ton of shows and movies. But what I miss about cable is the channel surfing. Sure, I can look through Hulus huge library, but its not the same as mindlessly flipping and then becoming engaged in something thats just on. If it werent for channel surfing, I would never have watched The Nanny .
I think the supposed disadvantages of watching television are sort of dying out. Most of the problems people associate with watching TV are issues that we now associate with pretty much any kind of entertainment.

Studies have shown that our bodies release oxytocin, the hormone for empathy and attachment, even when watching a fictional story onscreen. TV can even instill a sense of belonging with our favorite characters even when we logically know theyre fake.
All those TV friends sound nice! So whats the problem? Well, theyre fake, but feelings of attachment can lead to more TV time, which perpetuates depression and increases aggression. As a kicker, a 30-year examination of television habits showed that happy people tend to watch less of it. Maybe its because theyre not mourning the loss of loved ones every time a show is canceled.
