Not surprisingly, the pharmaceutical industry has already started exploring CB1 receptor drugs as potential weight loss weapons.

In 2006, a medication called rimonabant which acted as a selective CB1 antagonist/inverse agonist was approved in 30 countries for the treatment of obesity. While these studies are certainly interesting, I would not recommend it for that purposeafter all, there are contradictory appetite stimulating and suppressing effects of the compounds in cannabis, says Chen. Even more troubling, cannabis can have the opposite desired effect in some cases. In one study, type-2 diabetics who were treated with the cannabinoid THCV were found to have lower blood sugar and improved pancreatic function. Now researchers and pharmaceutical companies are further investigating whether this cannabinoid can aid in weight loss and treat diabetes.

In One Study Marijuana Killed Brain Cells That Were Cancerous

While brain cancer is relatively rare, the thought alone is terrifying to many people. Luckily for people who consume cannabis, research from a team of Spanish scientists has shown that THC may shrink braintumors.

The study, which was conducted by Guillermo Velasco and his Complutense University colleagues, used mice inflicted with human tumors as study subjects. The researchers found that when the mice were administered with THC, the size of their tumors shrank significantly.The study also included two human subjects with an aggressive type of brain cancer. After a 26- and 30-day treatment with THC, researchers found that THC was actually able to eliminate these subjects’ cancer cells while leaving healthy brain tissue intact-so it seems that in some cases, marijuana does kill brain cells.

While more research is needed to fully solidify the anti-cancer properties of marijuana, it’s clear that cannabis may one day become a primary go-to for healthy, non-toxic brain cancer treatment.

Studies With Young Adults

Almost five thousand young adults in a coronary artery risk development study were tracked over 25 years until mid-adulthood. The researchers found that lifelong marijuana use appeared to have a cumulative effect and was associated with reduced scores on a verbal memory test.

THC appears to have no direct effect on cognitive abilities like processing speed. That was a significant finding that persisted even after adjusting for demographics, other substance use, and mental health issues.

Two longitudinal twin studies found that young twins who used marijuana showed a significant loss of verbal ability equivalent to four IQ points.

The twins also displayed overall deficits in general knowledge. Cognitive deficiencies were observed during the preteen years, late adolescent years, and in early adulthood.

A shorter-term twin study found no significant differences between twins when one twin used marijuana and the other twin did not.

However, marijuana effects on the brain can be many, including the inhibition of short-term memories, distorting the perception of time, and regulating appetite. THC, the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana, interferes with cannabinoid receptors in the brain.

After a user ingests marijuana, its chemicals make their way into the bloodstream, which carries these different substances throughout the body. Also, cannabis contains molecules that are similar to those produced in the brain, known as cannabinoids. Once THC reaches the brain, it binds to these receptors, which are then directly affected by the chemical.

Scientists with Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research have proposed a novel theory that cannabis use reverses the impact of the standard American diet by reducing the effects of an elevated ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids on endocannabinoid tone.

The idea goes something like this:

1. The standard American diet contains a lot of sugars and refined starches that result in an elevated omega-6/omega-3 ratio.

2. Omega-6 fatty acids are converted into cannabinoids called AEA and 2-AG, which stimulate CB1 receptors. CB1 receptors play a huge role in regulating appetite and metabolism.

3. An elevated omega-6/omega-3 ratio results in more AEA and 2-AG, which leads to overstimulation of CB1 receptors and increased appetite and metabolism dysfunction.

4. Cannabis, and specifically THC, down-regulates CB1 activity. Although marijuana causes an initial up-regulation , it quickly switches to influence longer lasting down-regulation behavior.

But why is THC so important?

Unlike other phytocannabinoids , THC is able to bind directly with CB1 receptors making it the main cannabinoid that can get the job done.

The proposed theory solves a lot of problems with previous research, as the study authors explain:

This logic also addresses the question of how medical marijuana and cannabis-based drugs like Marinol can increase appetite and weight gain in patients suffering from condition or treatment-related anorexia or wasting, but still increase weight loss in other patients.

Hypoxic Brain Damage From Overdose

Overdoses of certain substances can lead to potentially fatal neurological complications and injuries, including hypoxia, the shortage of oxygen delivery to the brain, and anoxia, meaning the total loss of oxygen that is usually due to hypoxia.17,18

Hypoxic brain injury can occur due to respiratory depression, a serious consequence of opioid overdose.19 In addition to being a particular risk with opioids , use of benzodiazepines, alcohol, or other sedatives can also lead to respiratory depression. Poly-substance use, which often involve combining substances that have depressant effects, such as opioids, sedatives, or alcohol. Combining substances in generalbut especially depressantscan have unpredictable and dangerous outcomes.19

Overdose survivors may develop a hypoxic brain injury that leads to long-lasting or even permanent damage such as  short-term memory loss, stroke, mental disorientation, loss of body movement, changes in gait, incontinence, temporary leg paralysis, reduced motor skills, slowed reaction time, seizures, nerve injury, and memory impairment.20

Long Term Effects Of Cocaine Use On The Brain

  • Severe depression
  • Increased risk for disorders like Parkinsons disease, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder
  • Delirium or psychosis

Not only is the weed kills brain cells theory a complete myth, but it is also the sheer opposite of reality! In certain circumstances, marijuana helps brain function, and while we are wary about adolescents using it, dozens of studies have determined that cannabis causes no long-term brain damage in adults, or drop in memory, ability to learn, etc.

It seems that no matter how much data we have that proves marijuana doesnt kill brain cells, anti-marijuana lobbyists will always twist the information to meet their agenda, just like the infamous New Zealand IQ study.

What About The Munchies

Before exploring theory details, one important point deserves attention:

Marijuana users eat more than non-marijuana users .

Almost every study cited above highlights increased caloric intake among marijuana users. One group of researchers found:

sers who had consumed cannabis for more than 1,800 days over 15 years consumed on average 619 more calories/day than nonusers, yet showed no difference in BMI.

Likewise, in a study of 10,623 U.S. adults aged 29-50, Public Health Nutrition reports:

We found caloric intake to be higher among marijuana users than among non-current users and that the intake increased as frequency of marijuana use increased.

Although energy intake was higher among marijuana users, their body mass index was somewhat lower.

The same study also found that heavy users consumed 582 more calories a day than non-users. Analyzing a collection of similar research, Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research summarizes:

Across these studies, on average, cannabis users consumed an additional 834calories/day relative to nonusers.

As the BMI of cannabis users is lower than non-users, this suggests that marijuana users must have increased metabolic rates   which brings us to the next piece of our puzzle.

The Mailing System Of The Brain And Thc

Think of the receptor system in the brain like that mail system that we discussed before. Once they drop off their package at the mailbox, then the package spends time in the mailbox or at the door. This is similar to how a chemical transfer works in the brain. Once the neurotransmitter drops the chemical off, then the chemical gets to work producing the feeling associated with the message, whether the message they are sending and receiving is about happy feelings or more negative feelings.

So for example, lets say that the dopamine mailman has come and delivered your daily dose of dopamine. Once the dopamine has linked up to your receiving mailbox, then it sits there and does its business to make us feel happy. After a time, we goes to pick up the mail for the day and disconnects that dopamine from the receptor in the mailbox.

This allows the receptor to be ready to accept its next drop off from the mailman. The same can be said for the cannabinoid receptor system that THC impacts. Once the cannabinoids have linked up with their special receptors, a protein comes along and removes the messenger chemical from the receptor.

When using drugs or alcohol, this communication or mailing process can get knocked out of sync or out of order. This can cause the neurotransmitter to stay connected to its receptor longer or to even potentially come back too soon.
