Trying to improve your performance at work or kick-start that novel you want to write? Maybe it’s time to consider the color of your walls, or your screen saver.

If a new study is any guide, the color red can make people’s work more accurate, but blue can make them more creative.

In the study, published Thursday in the online edition of Science magazine, researchers at the University of British Columbia conducted tests with 600 participants to see how cognitive performance varies when people see red or blue. Participants performed tasks in which words or images were displayed against red, blue or neutral backgrounds on computer screens.

Red groups did better on tests of recall and attention to detail, like remembering words or checking spelling and punctuation. Blue groups did better on tests requiring invention and imagination: coming up with creative uses for a brick or creating toys from collections of shapes.

“If you’re talking about wanting enhanced memory for something like proofreading skills, then a red color should be used,” concluded Juliet Zhu, an assistant professor of marketing at the university’s business school, who conducted the studies with Ravi Mehta, a doctoral student. For “a brainstorming session for a new product or coming up with a new solution to fight child obesity or teenage smoking, then you should get people into a blue room.”

    Does All Paper Turn Yellow

With paper, it all comes back to the fact that its made from wood, which contains the substance lignin. When the molecules responsible for color in lignin are exposed to air and sunlight, they become less stable, causing them to absorb more light, gradually darkening the paper from white to yellow.

Scientific Links Between Handwriting Your Notes And Memory

At conferences, lectures, and meetings, its common to see the people around you typing notes on their laptops, tablets, or phones. Maybe youre doing it too!

And why not? Typing is an incredibly efficient way to capture large amounts of information.

But if youre looking to actually master the material, typing notes is actually is not the best way to do that. Recent studies from psychologists and neuroscientists alike have found that handwriting is king for effective learning.

It has to do with how the brain processes different inputs of information. More specifically, it matters whether you transcribe a speakers content digitally or instead capture its essence on paper.

As digital continues to dominate, going old-school with handwriting just might work to your advantage. Writing by hand tends to boost your ability to retain information, comprehend new ideas, and be more productive with the added bonus of eliminating the distractions of your device.

Read on to learn more about three scientific links between writing out your notes by hand and actually remembering the important stuff.

    Colour And Memory Performance

Colour has been found to influence memory performance by increasing our attentional level and arousal. There exist robust evidences from several studies that have been conducted to explore the relationship between colour and memory performance. Those studies are reviewed in detail below.

Spence, Wong, Rusan, and Rastegar examined the ability to recognise coloured and gray-scale images of neutral scenes with 120 participants. They reported that participants recognition of the neutral scenes were approximately 5% higher in the coloured condition compared to the grey scale condition, F = 47.0, P< 0.0001. The same comparison was significant at the 0.05 level or better for different exposure durations. A similar finding was reached in a recall test conducted by Smilek and colleagues . Smilek, Dixon, and Merikle , carried out a study to investigate the influence of colour on memory performance. They used digit numbers with four different conditions black, white, congruent, and incongruent colour conditions. They utilized the undergraduate students as their participants in the study. Three minutes were given to the participants to study the stimuli and another three minutes for them to recall the stimuli. The stimuli were exposed to the participants through a computer screen. Significant differences were found between recall conditions. The memory performance of the participants was found to be better in the congruent colour condition compared to the other conditions .

So Which Colours Work Best For Revision

You should choose your colours carefully as certain colours have a bigger impact on memory than others, warm colours stimulate while cool colours calm.

Youre far more likely to remember something written in red because red grabs your attention. Yellow and orange are also attention-grabbing colours but avoid dull colours like grey and brown. Red and yellow both help stimulate the mind, but they do so in different ways: Red generally means something is important and needs our attention, so is good for memory retrieval, whereas yellow helps stimulate mental activity and highlights whats important. Studies have shown that blue and green both have a calming influence and increase concentration, while blue in particular is proven to boost creative thinking.

Here is a great colour chart to help.

Collect And Analyze Data And Report On The Results

After you have collected the data for your experiment, analyze the results. Did the color of the paper used have any effect on your dependent variable? Were the results of the experiment statistically significant? Write up your results in the manner required by your instructors, such as a bulletin board presentation or a lab report.

  • During training, ask learners to keep a training journal. They dont need to write much, just 1-2 sentences listing key takeaways from their training session or a note on what they liked the most.
  • Jot things down. Rather than typing training notes, encourage learners to write down key words or phrases that will remind them of the main themes.
  • Make lists. Suggest to learners that they should organize their thoughts by creating hand written lists. The more information that learners can write down and organize, the more likely they are to remember.
  • Factors That Influence The Effectiveness Of Colour On Memory Performance

The studies reviewed above showed that colours can lead to better memory performance. There are however studies that indicate an opposing effect of colour on memory. On the basis of the studies reviewed previously, it can be summarized that the effectiveness of colour on memory performance is based on a few factors. First is the consistency of the colours used during encoding and retrieval phases. This means the colour used or presented during the time when participants are asked to memorize should be the same with the colour shown to them at the time of retrieval. This rule is in line with the encoding specificity principle that highlights the close connection between these two memory processes, encoding, and retrieval in determining the memory performance. The greater match of conditions in these two processes, the better is the retrieval outcome.

Arousal, especially emotional arousal, can play an essential role in keeping the information in the memory system. Colours can enhance the relationship between arousal and memory. Kaya and Epps , asked their 98 college student volunteers in public institutions to associate colours with emotion. It was found that the majority of participants associated green colour with the feeling of calmness, happiness, comfort, peace, hope, and excitement. Black colour was associated with the feeling of sadness, depression, fear, and anger. This means that colours have an emotional arousing effect. However, the degree of arousal level may differ depending on the type of emotion or feeling being attached to it . According to Jackson, Wu, Linden, and Raymond , some types of emotion may have a greater effect on arousal than the others. For instance, anger was found to have a greater arousal effect than happy or neutral type of emotion. Red colour is being attached with stronger emotion or feeling compared to the other type of colours. Based on the studies mentioned, it shows that colour can produce an emotional arousing effect but the degree or range of arousal varies depending on the emotional element that is attached with specific type of colour.

    Increased Retention And Understanding

Research conducted by Pam Mueller of Princeton University and Daniel Oppenheimer of the University of California, Los Angeles suggests that writing by hand increases memory retention and understanding. In their research, Mueller and Oppenheimer compared students who took handwritten notes to those who typed notes on their laptops.

The study concluded that although there are some benefits to writing more notes verbatim, typing actually impairs learning because of the way our brain processes information. The research showed that when students typed their notes, they tried to type verbatim and as much as they could. This method only allows for service level retention due to the idle nature of typing notes. Mueller and Oppenheimer explained that there is something about typing that leads to mindless processing and there is something about ink and paper that prompts students to go beyond merely hearing and recording new information. When handwriting notes, one must be selective because you cant write as quickly as you can type. That extra step and layer of processing allows for deeper retention and analyses.

How To Use Color In Learning

Kids will pay better attention and remember information better when color is utilized in the presentation of information.

Use color to learn, and then to recall information. Studies of people with Alzheimer Disease showed improve memory with color cues. Other studies showed that learners recall images better if in color not in black and white.

For example: when creating thinking maps differentiate and organize topics and sub-topics by color and hue. Then when learners need to remember, theyll be able to recall the color cues as well as the information.
