Lets say you step on a rock. How does a sensory nerve in the peripheral nervous system know this is any different than something like a soft toy? Different sensory nerve fibers respond to different things and produce different chemical responses which determine how sensations are interpreted. Some nerves send signals associated with light touch, while others respond to deep pressure.

Special pain receptors called nociceptors activate whenever there has been an injury, or even a potential injury, such as breaking the skin or causing a large indentation. Even if the rock does not break your skin, the tissues in your foot become compressed enough to cause the nociceptors to fire off a response. Now, an impulse is heading through the nerve into the spinal cord, and eventually all the way to your brain. This happens within fractions of a second.

The brain is the organ responsible for processing pain, integrating the incoming information through nerve terminals, and the interpretation of these signals. However, interestingly, the organ itself doesnt feel pain.

Thus, pain is a vital signal that warns of an injury or damage. And it sets natural mechanisms in motion to solve it. The way it does it is through a series of nerve endings that pick up a signal.

The name of these endings is nociceptors and they receive sensory information from the outside and inside of your bodies. Theyre at the end of the axons of sensory neurons and can transmit it to the brain. Also, it can transmit information about mechanical, thermal, or chemical lesions in a matter of tenths of a second to the entire nervous system.

How Your Brain Deals With Pain

As Johns Hopkins University neuroscience professor David Linden shares with NPR, the pain you feel when hurt is controlled and directed by your brain’s circuitry. As the brain filters all of the information coming from your sensory nerves, it focuses on certain bits and pieces in particular.

Linden explains, “The brain can say, ‘Hey that’s interesting. Turn up the volume on this pain information that’s coming in.’ Or it can say, ‘Oh no let’s turn down the volume on that and pay less attention to it.'”

Your brain processes pain both physically, where it notes the location and intensity, and emotionally, where it dictates your reaction. For example, when you feel a sharp, stabbing pain shoot down your leg, that’s your brain’s interpretation of physical intensity. When you find yourself shrieking out loud in response, that’s your brain’s emotional response.

So, what does this all have to do with pain management? If you know what, exactly, sets off your brain’s emotional responses to injury, you can better control what you feelor what you think you feel.

Distract Your Brain From Feeling The Pain

Your brain filters determine how, and to what extent, you feel pain. So in order to control what you feel, you need to find a way to manage what it is your brain’s sensors pick up.

That’s what researchers at Brown University studied. When examining the frequency of brain waves in response to physical sensations, the team found that attempts to ignore feelings and senses cause low-frequency rhythmswhich do the blockingto increase, not only in the area of the brain that deals with a certain body part in question, but in the area of the brain that ignores distractions.

When asked to focus on a specific hand or foot, the study’s participants responded to light taps from the researchers on different body partsbut not physically. Instead, their brains began increasing low-frequency rhythms as they struggled to fight the response of the body part being touched. While the brain worked to ignore the distracting touch on one body part, it began working to filter out that physical, sensory information.

This means, according to the researchers, that you can teach your brains to filter out pain, but perhaps only pain that is chronic. The repeated messages from a spot on your body filled with pain dull over time as the brain become used to receiving them, lessening the emotional and physical sensation.

CIP was first reported in 1932 by a New York physician called George Dearborn who described the case of a 54-year-old ticket salesman who claimed not to recall any pain despite a range of experiences such as being impaled by a lathing hatchet as a child, and subsequently running home.

How Does Acute Pain Become Chronic Pain

If you have pain that goes away once the injury has healed, thats acute pain. However, sometimes, those pain receptors continue, normally this is due to either a condition thats causing damage to your tissues or other conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia and other similar illnesses.

For example, if your joint is in daily despair causing signals of pain to go back and forth to the brain with little pause, there is likely tissue damage, and even when no tissue damage is observed, the nociceptors continue to shoot off impulses, this is known as chronic pain, which is more difficult to treat because its a challenge to pinpoint.

Rural Doctor Launches Startup To Ease Pain Of Dying Patients

So the researchers monitored the brain waves of a dozen people who were asked to pay attention only to their hand or only to their foot. During the experiment the scientists delivered a light tap to each person’s finger or toe.

When participants focused on their feet, low-frequency rhythms increased in the brain area that responds to hand sensations because participants were asking their brains to ignore sensory input from the hand, and it’s these low-frequency rhythms that do the blocking of such information. That was expected.

But low-frequency rhythms also increased in a different brain area the region that ignores distractions, the team discovered. They reported their findings in the current issue of The Journal of Neuroscience.

The two areas became synchronized, Jones says. “There’s coordination between the front part of the brain, which is the executive control region of the brain, and the sensory part of the brain, which is filtering information from the environment,” she says.

That suggests that at least some people can teach their brains how to filter out things like chronic pain, perhaps through meditation, Jones says.

A 2011 study supports this idea. It found that people who practiced mindfulness meditation for eight weeks greatly improved their control of the brain rhythms that block out pain.

People With Cip Would Love To Know What Pain Means And What It Feels Like To Be In Pain

People assume that feeling no pain is this incredible thing and it almost makes you superhuman, Betz says. For people with CIP its the exact opposite. We would love to know what pain means and what it feels like to be in pain. Without it, your life is full of challenges.

As a young child, Betzs parents initially believed he was mildly mentally retarded. We couldnt understand why he was so clumsy, his father Dominic remembers. He was constantly bumping into things and getting all these bruises and cuts.

Neither his parents or siblings have the condition, but the diagnosis of CIP eventually came when aged five, he bit off the tip of his tongue, without any apparent pain response. Shortly afterwards he fractured the right metatarsal in his foot, after jumping down a flight of stairs.

From an evolutionary perspective, one of the reasons scientists believe CIP is so rare is because so few individuals with the disorder reach adulthood. We fear pain, but in developmental terms from being a child to being a young adult, pain is incredibly important to the process of learning how to modulate your physical activity without doing damage to your bodies, and in determining how much risk you take, Kurth explains.

How Your Brain Sees Pain

Why Do We Get Headaches?

Even though the spinal reflex takes place at the dorsal horn, the pain signal continues to the brain. This is because pain involves more than a simple stimulus and response. Simply taking your foot off the rock does not solve all of your problems. No matter how mild the damage, the tissues in your foot still need to be healed. In addition, your brain needs to make sense of what has happened. Pain gets catalogued in your brains library, and emotions become associated with stepping on that rock.

When the pain signal reaches the brain it goes to the thalamus, which directs it to a few different areas for interpretations.

A few areas in the cortex figure out where the pain came from and compare it to other kinds of pain with which is it familiar. Was it sharp? Did it hurt more than stepping on a tack? Have you ever stepped on a rock before, and if so was it better or worse?

Signals are also sent from the thalamus to the limbic system, which is the emotional center of the brain. Ever wonder why some pain makes you cry? The limbic system decides. Feelings are associated with every sensation you encounter, and each feeling generates a response. Your heart rate may increase, and you may break out into a sweat. All because of a rock underfoot.

What Causes Headaches

Lots of different things can bring on headaches. Most headaches are related to:

  • some medicines
  • vision problems
  • smelling strong odors such as perfume, smoke, fumes, or a new car or carpet
  • some foods

For some teens, hormonal changes can also cause headaches. For example, some girls get headaches just before their periods or at other regular times during their monthly cycle.

When To See A Doctor

If youve been diagnosed with cancer elsewhere in your body and you start to experience strong headaches, tell your doctor. The cancer may have spread to your brain. Be ready to describe all your symptoms in detail. The nature of your headaches will help your physician make a better treatment plan.

If you have no cancer history, see your doctor or a neurologist if a headache lasts for several days or weeks with little or no relief.

A headache that continues to worsen with no response to traditional pain treatment should also be evaluated. Weight loss, muscle numbness, and sensory changes that accompany a headache should be checked promptly, too.

How Can I Feel Better

Most headaches will go away if a person rests or sleeps. When you get a headache, lie down in a cool, dark, quiet room and close your eyes. It may help to put a cool, moist cloth across your forehead or eyes. Relax. Breathe easily and deeply.

If a headache doesn’t go away or it’s really bad, you may want to take an over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. You can buy these in drugstores under various brand names, and your drugstore may carry its own generic brand. It’s a good idea to avoid taking aspirin for a headache because it may cause a rare but dangerous disease called Reye syndrome.

If you are taking over-the-counter pain medicines more than twice a week for headaches, or if you find these medicines are not working for you, talk to your doctor.

Most headaches are not a sign that something more is wrong. But if your headaches are intense and happen often, there are lots of things a doctor can do, from recommending changes in your diet to prescribing medicine. You don’t have to put up with the pain!
