When we think about the benefits of exercise, we usually think of better sleep, more energy, maintaining a healthy weight, stronger muscles or a healthier heart.

These are all true. But we rarely consider the immediate effects that physical activity can have on the most important organ in our bodies: the brain.

Through my years of research as a neuroscientist, I’ve found that exercising is one of the most transformative things you can do to improve cognitive abilities, such as learning, thinking, memory, focus and reasoning all of which can help you become smarter and live longer.

Does Brain Training Software Work

Lumosity, a website founded by Michael Scanlon, Kunal Sarkar and David Drescher, certainly has confidence, in the age old notion, that brain exercises really can make a difference.

They were perhaps the first , of an ever growing trend. Other brain-exercising and training software programs include CogniFit, CogMed, Mind Sparke and Jungle Memory.

Neurologist, Dr. Carolyn Leaf has a series called Switch on the Brain. Her software presents the concept that cortical mapping and remapping of the brain is possible.

Co-founder Michael Scanlon began developing the Lumosity website, after he dropped out of Stanford, where he was pursuing a PHD in neuroscience. Recently, the reports are that over 50 million people have become members of the website, and the mobile app continues to be downloaded thousands of times every day.

In 2007, Susanne Jaeggi, and other researchers published their Columbia University study, which pointed to short-term memory gains and IQ increases from digital brain training.

Thomas Redick and colleagues at Georgia Tech tested 17 varied cognitive tasks, including those that tested working memory, fluid intelligence, multitasking, and discernment speed. Overall, the Redick findings were that Jaeggi had been optimistic and there were no universal permanent improvements, only short-term, specific enhancements.

Over the 13 years since Jaeggi published, cognitive improvement research has continued. Some show more promise than others.

As we know, our movements are under contraction muscles control, through signals transmitted by neuromuscular nerves. In our day-a-day activities our bodies use the exact amount in muscle-nerve motor units, trying to use the least as it can.

That means our muscles are programmed to use an amount according to the required activity. If youre going to lift a glass of water, you will not need the same force as when lifting a 5 lb box. So, to lift up that heavy box, the brain simply recruits more motor units.

Last week we began our three-part mini series, Learning Mindsets, with Part 1: Why you should never tell your kids theyre smart. In it we gave you a short introduction to two different mindsets, the growth mindset and the fixed mindset. You can read about them here but what the blog post reveals is that were able to adopt one of two mindsets towards learning and intelligence. We can either believe that intelligence is fixed by genes , or that it can be grown through effort, struggle and failure .

We also gave you a few process-based praise examples .

As we continue the series this week, we want to further explore how we can help students frame positive views of themselves and their own struggles when learning something new. A great way to do this is by telling students that their brains are growing the most when they challenge themselves to work on really difficult tasks.

Research has shown for a while that that the brain is like a muscle the more we use it, the more it grows.

Whenever we learn something new, our brain forms new neural connections and whenever we struggle or make mistakes during difficult tasks, this is when our apprehension of these tasks forms and deepens the most.

So the more we struggle the more our brains grow, and the smarter we get.

Instead of just telling them how they should think were giving them the why.

A Stubbornly Persistent Myth

Thinking about learning Latin for the sake of building mental muscles is so far from the current educational norm, that it can feel almost quaint. We see ourselves as above falling for such a simplistic error in our own ideas about learning, right?

Yet, its exactly a revival of this failed analogy that you see popping up in all sorts of places.

Critical thinking is often touted as the must-teach skill in high-schools and colleges. And while learning logic and syllogisms may be useful in some particular settings, the idea that this exercise trains us to be good thinkers generally was given a thrashing almost a century ago.

Similar are the cries for universal training in programming. While programming is definitely a useful skill and there are many practical applications for programming, thats not the only reason offered for it. Programmers have better thinking skills, it has been argued, and that teaching kids to code will help them think logically about the world. The muscle metaphor persists.

Brain-training games premise their entire application on the idea that one can improve cognition like a muscle, training on irrelevant mental tasks to improve brain strength. Some studies do even suggest that they may work on tests of general reasoning.

“If you are experiencing a kind of burnout, you should try to figure out what the cause is,” Greenberg says. Your brain can only do so much. Until science finds out more about the innerworkings of brain cells to help them do more, you’ll have to focus on lifestyle changes.

    It Improves Your Focus And Concentration

    In one of my lab experiments, I found that a single workout can help improve your ability to shift and focus attention.
