The thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian tiger, is believed to have gone extinct in 1936. It looked very much like a dog or wolf but was actually a carnivorous marsupial not related to canids because marsupials split off from other mammals over 100 million years ago.

Brain Scans Show Striking Similarities Between Dogs And Humans

A new brain-imaging study of mankind’s best friend has found a striking similarity in how humans and dogs and perhaps many other mammals process voice and emotion.

Like humans, dogs appear to possess brain systems that are devoted to making sense of vocal sounds, and are sensitive to their emotional content. These systems have not previously been described in dogs or any non-primate species, and the new findings offer an intriguing neurobiological glimpse into the richness of our particular corner of the animal kingdom.

“What makes us really excited now is that we’ve discovered these voice areas in the dog brain,” said comparative ethologist Attila Andics of Hungary’s Eötvös Loránd University, lead author of the Feb. 20 Current Biology paper describing the experiments. “It’s not only dogs and humans. We probably share this function with many other mammals.”

Conducted in the laboratory of fellow Eötvös Loránd ethologist Ádám Miklósi, one of the world’s foremost researchers on canine intelligence and behavior, the study was inspired by a turn-of-the-millennium discovery of regions of the human brain attuned to human voices. Similar regions have since been described in monkeys, which last shared a common ancestor with humans 30 million years ago.

Are Big Dogs Smarter Than Small Dogs

It depends on what you mean by smart. A new study published in Animal Cognition indicates that bigger dogs, who have larger brains than smaller dogs, perform better than smaller dogs on some measures of intelligence.

Specifically, bigger dogs with bigger brains do better on a specific type of intelligence called executive functioning, which is linked to self-control in both humans and canines.

In humans, the level of executive function can affect academic success, the ability to navigate social situations, and the willpower necessary to avoid dangerous or self-destructive behavior. In canines, executive function is what enables them to maintain context-appropriate behavior.

Which is why big breeds such as Labrador retrievers and Great Danes have better executive function than small breeds such as Yorkshire terriers and Welsh corgis.

Those are the findings of researchers from the University of Arizona, who obtained their data from the citizen science website Dognition. They used data from more than 7,000 purebred domestic dogs from 74 different breeds. Brain size was estimated based on breed standards.

Dog owners tested their pets short-term memory by hiding treats under one of two overturned plastic cups, in full view of the dogs. After waiting between 60 to 150 seconds, the owners released the dogs to get the treats.

The smaller dogs had more trouble remembering which cup the treat was under.

If Big Dogs Have Bigger Brains Could It Give Them An Intellectual Advantage

    Size matters. Human beings are larger than more than 90% of the other species living on our planet, and evolutionary anthropologists have argued that our relatively large size has given us a survival advantage. Obviously, our increased size brings with it increased strength. It also means larger organs, including everything associated with the nervous system, so is it possible that larger size also brings with it increased mental ability? And if so, would this fact have implications for relative intelligence in a species like dogs, where breeds may vary in size from a 4-pound Yorkshire Terrier to a 280-pound English Mastiff?

    Such questions popped into my head when I was analyzing the data which ultimately formed the basis for my book The Intelligence of Dogs, in which I ranked the working and obedience intelligence of 120 different dog breeds. I remember taking a break from my statistical work to have coffee with a few my colleagues. I told them I had been puzzled to find that in the top 20% of the dogs ranked for their intelligence, there was only one small toy breed .

    An interesting result is that as the task is made harder , the superiority of the larger dogs becomes even more pronounced. As the researchers note, “the gap in performance between breeds of varying brain sizes generally widens as a function of increased cognitive demands.”

    Analysis With Machine Learning

    We trained a support vector machine classifier from spatiotemporal EEG data, band-pass filtered to 225;Hz, to discriminate between epochs originating from different image categories. For the machine-learning analysis, all recorded trials were included to ensure the data suffiency, yielding 128155 trials across the eight conditions and dogs. Before classifier training, we averaged temporally adjacent data points using a non-overlapping time window of 20;ms. This way the dimensionality of the original data was reduced with only a minimal loss of temporal information. After vectorization of the resulting timechannel matrix, we obtained 301-dimensional feature vectors for classifier training and testing. We trained a separate SVM classifier for each binary classification task, leading to /2=28 classifiers for each dog, using the statistics and machine learning toolbox of Matlab .
