Baleen Whales Are Just Your Average Mammal

We think of baleen whales, such as blue and humpback whales, as extreme animals due to their massive body and brain. But this research shows that they are actually a typical mammal. They have not deviated from the ancestral mammal relationship of body and brain size: as the body gets bigger, so does the brain.

On the other hand, toothed whales such as killer whales and dolphins, have large brains because of a huge reduction in body size but not in brain size, making their brains look relatively bigger in comparison.

    An international team of palaeontologists, led by AMRI and UNSWs Dr Matthew McCurry, shed light on why whales and dolphins have such large brains with the help of baleen whale fossils.

    The reasons why whales and dolphins have evolved large brains which are only rivalled by those seen in primates have long been debated. A new study by a group of international scientists, from Australia, New Zealand, Italy, the UK, the US and Japan, and led by the AMs Dr Matthew McCurry helps answer the hotly debated topic. Their findings have just been published in the prestigious scientific journal, the Biological Journal of the Linnean Society.

    Cetaceans are renowned as having the largest and one of the most highly developed brains in the animal kingdom for example, the sperm whale has a brain roughly 7-9 kg in size1. Many species also have brains that are relatively large compared to their body size. Despite the amount of scientific research undertaken in this area, the reason why this group evolved large brains remains abstract. One of the most prevalent arguments is tied with echolocation a sense used to navigate environments and hunt prey2. Dolphins and other toothed whales use a series of high-pitched clicking sounds, which are beamed out through their heads and reflected back off objects such as prey.

    There Is A Jump In Mammal Brain And Body Size At Extinction Events

    The study showed that most changes in brain size occurred after two cataclysmic events in Earth’s history: the KPG mass extinction 66 million years ago and a climatic transition 23-33 million years ago.

    After the mass extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous period, the researchers noticed a dramatic shift in brain and body size in lineages such as rodents, bats and carnivorans as animals filled the empty niches left by the now extinct dinosaurs.

    Roughly 30 million years later, a cooling climate in the Late Paleogene led to more profound changes, with seals, bears, whales and primates all undergoing evolutionary shifts in their brain and body size.

    This is what has led to the pattern in brain sizes that we see in modern mammals today.

    All of this adds up to a much more complex picture of what drives brain size than we previously thought, with everything from climate change and mass extinctions to body size and, of course, a little bit of intelligence .

    How Do Sperm Whales Communicate

    This species of whales has the ability to emit vocalizations and clicks, also called echolocation. These sounds are employed to locate themselves when navigating and to communicate with each other. The vocalizations are emitted from their bony nostrils, through the phonic lips from a structure inside their head. Then the sound waves, move underwater until they hit an object and bounce back to the emitter, like a kind of radar which detects position, shape and size of the object in question.

    Why Are Whales So Big?

    To provide support to this idea, my colleagues and I examined the heat-producing system within the brains of cetaceans and their close relatives the artiodactyls such as hippopotamuses, pigs, antelopes, buffaloes and giraffes.

    We reasoned that this heat-producing system would have to use the process of non-shivering thermogenesis, a way to produce heat within cells rather than through muscular activity, as there are no muscles surrounding the brain. The most commonly studied part of the body that produces heat through non-shivering thermogenesis is brown fat. Brown fat cells can change their internal metabolic pathways so as to produce heat, warming up the body. This happens when mitochondria change their activity so that rather than producing adenosine triphosphate , for chemical energy in the cell, they produce heat. This is achieved by activating uncoupling proteins .

    In the cetacean brain we found that almost three times as many neurons contain these proteins compared to their terrestrial relatives. We also found that between 30 and 70% of glial cells contain UCPs in cetaceans, while in artiodactyls the glial cells did not contain UCPs in readily detectable amounts. Glial cells are the housekeepers of the brain: they maintain the right micro-environment to support active neuronal functioning.

For the fossil artiodactyls in that dataset , we follow the reported body mass estimates, and use our new equation to estimate brain mass from the endocranial volumes published by Orliac and Gilissen .
