How Video Games Affect Your Brain

As long as youre not staring at the screen for 10 hours straight , playing video games can actually make for better vision. In one study, 10 male students who were not gamers were trained for 30 hours in first-person action games and then tested against 10 non-gamers. The students who played were able to see objects more clearly in cluttered spaces because of improved spatial resolution. They were able to train their brains to see smaller details, because in each game, those details turned out to be important.

Video Games May Slow Down Aging

Male, female, young adult, middle-aged person all have one thing in common and thats aging.

And while getting older and wiser has its perks, there are also a number of natural problems that come about as well.

Theres a reason why you see senior citizens driving at 25 MPH even though the speed limit is 45.

But just like maintaining a healthy exercise routine can help your body feel 50 when youre 60, our brain can also be kept in shape.

In fact, a study conducted by researchers at the University of Iowa showed that playing games can do just that.

The study had 681 healthy people aged 50 and older play 10 hours of a certain video game for five to eight weeks, and this is what they found:

Weve shown that 10 hours is enough to slow the decline by several years. We saw a range across all our tests from a minimum of a year-and-a-half all the way up to about six-and-a-half years of recovery or improvement. From just 10 to 14 hours of training, thats quite a lot of improvement.

It seems performing any task that requires exercising your mind will help it stay sharper, and that includes video games.

If you have ever done a crossword or sudoku, then you already know the benefits of gaming. Video games can train your brain, open up new pathways of thought in your brain, and keep your mind a honed edge.

Aspects Of Video Games Illuminate Their Effects

8 Negative Effects Of Playing PUBG Will Make You Realize ...

If video games can be both beneficial and harmful to players, how can we predict their effects on individuals and populations? And how can scientists stay out of the polarizing debate while still reporting the results of their studies? The answer to the second question is that scientists must be precise. I see five aspects of video games that can affect players: amount, content, structure, mechanics and context. Together, these aspects can explain different research results.

Amount

We would expect that as people spend more time playing video games, their risk of performing poorly in school, becoming overweight or obese, and developing specific negative physical health outcomes would increase. We may also correlate more time spent playing with a higher number of video-induced seizures in people with epilepsy or photosensitivity disorder.

These correlations might begin with gamers existing characteristics. For example, low-performing students are more likely to spend more time playing, which may give them a sense of mastery that eludes them at school. Nonetheless, every hour that a child spends on video games is not spent doing homework, reading, creating, or participating in other activities that might have more educational benefit. Longitudinal studies support the idea that childrens school performance worsens as their gaming time increases.

Why Do Violent Video Games Affect People’s Behavior

Some of these choices are for the best or the worst it will always depend on how someone wants to play the game. The way these video games also reduce stress is that they allow the player to take all of their anger and hate and put it into the video game making it so the player is no longer how they were at the beginning of the game. For example if a kid that was about ready to punch someone in the face starts to play a violent video game like Fallout or GTA the kid might be able to reduce the amount of anger that he had kept within. However the main controversy with violent video games is that games like these are also causing the players to become much more aggressive in there daily lives. Another troubling sign is using video games to escape real life. As noted above, this type of behavior can lead to video game addiction, which then leads to other negative behaviors. Too much gaming can become a problem, but in moderation, it can do great things for your mental health.

Effect On Other Parts Of The Brain

The part of the brain in charge of decision-making, social behaviour and cognitive planning is called the prefrontal cortex. So, if you play a game that requires planning and interacting with objects in a virtual world, youre actually exercising that part of your brain, which is great, since you need to develop it in order to deal with real-life situations and problems. On the other hand, there is the right hippocampus, which helps us process and consolidate information, working with both short- and long-term memory. Certain games you play on your state-of-the-art gaming laptop can also help you improve memory and teach you how to organise information. Are Video Games And Screens Another Addiction

In our increasingly digitalized world, where most of us, and even our children, own electronic devices with screens, many parents and adults worry about the impact of screen use for themselves and their children.

There is much controversy over the effects of screen use and exposure to violence in video games. This year, the American Academy of Pediatrics rolled back some of the strict guidelines for screen time, citing that not all time children spend in front of digital devices is negative. The AAP sought to strike a balance between the increasing dependence on technology and what is healthy for young, developing minds.

Yet, a reason for concern and thoughtful monitoring of screen use remains. A 2014 study conducted by Zhejiang Normal University in China found that young adults who were addicted to online gaming showed lower volumes of gray and white brain matter than young adults in the control group who were not addicted to online gaming. Lower volumes of gray and white matter in some areas of the brain translates to increased difficulties with decision-making, impulse control and emotion regulation.

In addition, recent studies have found that excessive video game and screen time interferes with sleep, mood and social learning in children and adolescents.

How Video Games Change Your Brain

There are few gamer kids who grew up without ever hearing their parents say youre going to go blind watching that screen all day.

For a while, it did seem like they had a point since we tend to blink much less frequently while playing a game.

This can cause serious problems like eyestrain and dry eye syndrome.

Another team of researchers from the University of Rochester sought to prove if games really worsen our vision.

The 2009 study involved having a group of experienced first-person shooter gamers plays Call of Duty and Unreal Tournament 2004 while more casual gamers played slow games like The Sims 2.

After testing, those who played the first-person shooters showed signs of having a better vision than the others.

Daphne Bavelier, the leader of the study, discovered that playing action games improves an ability called contrast sensitivity function.

This ability helps us discern between changes in shades of gray against a colored backdrop, which is very beneficial while driving at night.

Spontaneous Brain Activity Did Not Show The Effect Of Violent Video Games On Aggression: A Resting

  • 1Faculty of Psychology, Southwest University, Chongqing, China
  • 2Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China
  • 3Department of Psychology, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China

A great many of empirical researches have proved that longtime exposure to violent video game can lead to a series of negative effects. Although research has focused on the neural basis of the correlation between violent video game and aggression, little is known whether the spontaneous brain activity is associated with violent video game exposure. To address this question, we measured the spontaneous brain activity using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging . We used the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations and fractional ALFF to quantify spontaneous brain activity. The results showed there is no significant difference in ALFF, or fALFF, between violent video game group and the control part, indicating that long time exposure to violent video games wont significantly influence spontaneous brain activity, especially the core brain regions such as execution control, moral judgment and short-term memory. This implies the adverse impact of violent video games is exaggerated.
