Brain Oxygen Deprivation: The Basics
Doctors typically refer to two distinct forms of oxygen deprivation: anoxic brain injuries occur when the brain is totally deprived of oxygen due to sudden cardiac arrest, choking, strangulation, and other sudden injuries. Hypoxic brain injuries occur when the brain receives less oxygen than it needs, but is not completely deprived of oxygen. Because the effects of the two injuries are similar, many brain experts use the terms interchangeably.
A few seconds of oxygen deprivation won’t cause lasting harm, so a child who holds his breath in frustration, a combatant choked unconscious during a Jiu-Jitsu match, and a diver who needs a few extra seconds to come up for air are unlikely to experience brain damage. The precise timeline of anoxic brain injuries depends on a number of personal idiosyncrasies, including overall brain and cardiovascular health, as well as the level of blood oxygenation at the time of injury. Generally speaking, injuries begin at the one-minute mark, steadily worsening thereafter.

What Happens During Cardiac Arrest
A person becomes unconscious quickly during cardiac arrest. This usually happens within 20 seconds after the heart stops beating. Without the oxygen and sugars it needs to function, the brain is unable to deliver the electrical signals needed to maintain breathing and organ function.
This can lead to a hypoxic-anoxic injury . Hypoxia refers to a partial lack of oxygen, while anoxia means a total lack of oxygen. In general, the more complete the oxygen loss, the more severe the harm to the brain.

Both cerebral hypoxia and anoxia are conditions that result from a lack of oxygen reaching or being absorbed by the brain. However, the difference between the two has to do with the amount of oxygen in the equation. A hypoxic brain injury occurs when there is a reduced amount of oxygen reaching or being absorbed by the brain. Anoxia, which is derived from the Greek terman, meaning not, without, plus the first two letters of the word oxygen, followed by ic. This means that an anoxic brain injury occurs when the brain suffers from a complete lack of oxygen, or oxygen deprivation.
According to the Shepherd Center, different types of anoxia include:
- Anemic Anoxia: This occurs when the red blood cells are unable to carry a sufficient amount of oxygen to the brain, or when the body lacks the blood supply to carry enough to meet the needs of the brain.

The brain needs a continuous supply of oxygen to survive. If the oxygen supply is interrupted, the functioning of the brain is disturbed immediately and irreversible damage can quickly follow. This is known as hypoxic or anoxic brain injury.

What Happens During An Ischemic Stroke
There are two main types, and each blocks blood flow in a different way.
Embolic stroke. In this case, a clot forms in some part of your body, often your heart, and starts floating through your blood vessels. Or a piece of plaque might break off and move along in your blood.
Eventually, the clot or chunk of plaque gets wedged in a small blood vessel in your brain. Once it’s stuck, blood flow to that area stops.
Thrombotic stroke. This one’s also caused by a clot in your brain. This time, a clot or blockage forms in one of the arteries that moves blood through your brain. Brain cells begin to die because blood flow is blocked.

What Happens After Coma And The Vs
The first sign of consciousness is usually visual tracking. This occurs when the patients eyes follow people or an object. Other signs include:
- Following simple instructions such as, Squeeze my hand, or Say your name.
- Communicating by saying words or indicating yes or no with head nods or gestures.
- Engaging in automatic behaviors like scratching the skin or crossing/uncrossing the legs.
People with brain injury will recover consciousness at a slow or fast rate, based on how severe their injury is. For people with very severe injuries, return of consciousness is a slow process. People with less severe injuries may move through the phases listed above quickly. Some of the stages described here may not be recognized or may not occur at all. For people with very severe injuries, recovery may stop at one of these stages.
Coma rarely lasts more than 4 weeks. Some patients move from coma to the VS. Others may move from coma to partial consciousness. It is rare for a person with severe brain injury to move directly from coma, or the VS, to full consciousness. People who are unconscious for a short time generally have had a less severe brain injury. As a result, they are likely to have a better recovery than people who are unconscious for a long time.
Another stage of recovery is called the minimally conscious state, or MCS. People in the MCS cant respond or communicate consistently.
Two Types Of Oxygen Deprivation
There are two primary types of oxygen deprivation anoxia and hypoxia. Lack of oxygen to the babys brain at birth can have long-term effects for the infant and their family. Hypoxia or anoxia can cause brain damage with long-term medical consequences. The difference between anoxia and hypoxia are:
- Anoxia: Anoxia occurs when oxygen to the brain is completely cut off for a period of time.
- Hypoxia: Hypoxia occurs when oxygen levels are restricted, but the baby does receive some oxygen flow.
When oxygen is restricted, the babys brain cells become damaged. This brain damage can occur quickly, and without restoring oxygen, brain cells may begin to die. In the most severe cases, oxygen deprivation can be fatal. Anoxia and hypoxia both can cause long-term medical conditions, including permanent brain damage and cerebral palsy.

Freediving May Cause Mild Neurological Damage
Another study was done on 16 professional Swedish freedivers and 5 none-diving adults. The results showed you could be at risk of brain damage when freediving. The group of 21 people were tested among several basic freediving styles and then had their blood samples taken. The findings showed that freediving massively boosts AÎ²42 and T-tau biomarkers in blood plasma. This indicated that transient hypoxia from breath-hold freediving may cause mild neurological dysfunction and damage.
