I have not been able to track down the exactsource of this myth, and I have never seen any scientific data to supportit. According to the believers of this myth, if we used more of ourbrain, then we could perform super memory feats and have other fantasticmental abilities – maybe we could even move objects with a single thought. Again, I do not know of any data that would support any of this.
The Origins Of The Myth
Researchers suggest that this popular urban legend has existed since at least the early 1900s. It may have been influenced by people misunderstanding or misinterpreting neurological research. The 10% myth may have emerged from the writings of psychologist and philosopher William James. In his 1908 book, The Energies of Men, he wrote, “We are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources.”
The myth has perpetuated much like other urban legends. Movies depict characters capable of remarkable feats when the supposedly unused 90% of their brains are “unlocked.” Well-intentioned people such as motivational speakers or teachers often cite the 10% myth as a way to demonstrate that all people should strive to live up to their full potential. Unfortunately, less well-meaning people have also used the myth to promote and sell products and services that they claim will unlock your brain’s hidden abilities.

But don’t feel too disappointed.
Because the science of what really is going on up there is far more interesting than any Hollywood blockbuster.

The thing is, says Kassem, you have a very narrow experience of what your brain is doing. You experience it reading this sentence right now. But in the background it is doing so many other things that you are not aware of.
Let’s start at the bottom of your skull. This region is called the brainstem. It is responsible for, among other things, keeping you alive.
OK, so my brain is at 100 per cent all the time. But you said I could boost it?
We Use Virtually Every Part Of The Brain The Brain Is Active Almost All The Time
The reality is that this claim is also inaccurate: Ill call it the 100 percent;myth. In fact, the 10 percent figure is a useful reference point for understanding how your brain works and for conceptualizing the actual patterns of;activity happening in your head.
Now, it is probably true that, over time, we use more than just 10 percent of the neurons in our heads. However, the total is probably well short of 100 percent. The probablies here have to do with the fact that it is very difficult to make high-resolution measurements of activity in lots of neurons in an awake animal. Even non-human animals like mice are difficult to record, and in humans, the precise recording is;nearly impossible.
Until recently, only a handful, a few dozen, or, more rarely, a few hundred or thousand neurons, could be measured at once with precision. However, neuroscientists are making significant progress.
In 2020, a large team led by Saskia de Vries of the Allen Institute for Brain Science published a blockbuster;paper;that made precise estimates of large-scale neural activity patterns in the mouse brain.
Its worth giving a little more detail about the methods of this study because they help illuminate a misleading argument in support of the 100 percent;myth.
What Does It Mean To Use Only 10% Of Your Brain
What data were used to come up with the number – 10%? Does this mean that you would be just fine if 90% of your brain was removed? If the average human brain weighs 1,400 grams and 90% of it was removed, that would leave 140 grams of brain tissue. That’s about the size of a sheep’s brain. It is well known that damage to a relatively small area of the brain, such as that caused by a stroke, may cause devastating disabilities. Certain neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s Disease, also affect only specific areas of the brain. The damage caused by these conditions is far less than damage to 90% of the brain.

Generally, we know about neurons, but what about the glial cells that support neurons? What are their function? Nor do scientists know where consciousness comes from. We know that people use far more than 10 percent of their full brain capacity, but scientists are also still trying to understand more about how the brain works and what its full potential can be. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that brain cells use to talk to each other. Some neurotransmitters make cells more active while others block or dampen a cell’s activity .
Acetylcholine is an;excitatory neurotransmitter;because it generally makes cells more excitable. It governs muscle contractions and causes glands to secrete hormones. Alzheimers disease, which initially affects memory formation, is associated with a shortage of acetylcholine.
Glutamate is a major excitatory neurotransmitter. Too much glutamate can kill or damage neurons and has been linked to disorders including Parkinson’s disease, stroke, seizures, and increased sensitivity to pain.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that constricts blood vessels and brings on sleep. It is also involved in temperature regulation. Low levels of serotonin may cause sleep problems and depression, while too much serotonin can lead to seizures.
Dopamine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter involved in mood and the control of complex movements. The loss of dopamine activity in some portions of the brain leads to the muscular rigidity of Parkinsons disease. Many medications used to treat behavioral disorders work by modifying the action of dopamine in the brain.

All of it! Every neuron in the brain is continually active, even if firing only slowly. Neurons that stop responding die. Even so, many people seem to believe that we use only part of our brain. It is extraordinary that such a myth can persist when it has so often been refuted.
There are many stories about the origin of this myth that early electroencephalograms could detect only a small percentage of the brains activity, or that early 20th-century researchers could find the functions for only about 10 per cent of the brain.
Alternatively it might have come from the more sensible speculation that we use only some of our brains potential. Potential is hard to measure or even to conceptualise. What might each of us potentially do if given every possible stimulation, training, superfood and so on?
All we can safely say is that each of us probably could do better, but not because we need to find unused bits of brain. They dont exist.
