The main allure of the 10 percent myth is the idea that you could do so much more if only you could unlock the rest of your brain. Even with ample evidence suggesting the contrary, why do many people still believe that humans only use 10 percent of their brains? Its unclear how the myth spread in the first place, but it has been popularized by self-help books, and may even also be grounded in older, flawed, neuroscience studies.
The myth could be aligned with messages espoused by self-improvement books, which show you ways to do better and live up to your “potential.” For example, the preface to the notorious “How to Win Friends and Influence People” says that the average person develops only 10 percent of his latent mental ability. This statement, which is traced back to psychologist William James, refers to a persons potential to achieve more rather than how much brain matter they used. Others have even said that Einstein explained his brilliance using the 10 percent myth, though these claims remain unfounded.
Its Not That Simple: Its Also A Question Of Search
Back to Professor Reber, who I got in touch with via email, who explained that the advances in technology help clarify some challenges embedded in human memory.
He said that you might have huge storage on your iPod or DVR, but the problem isnt storing everything you want to listen to, its finding it again later.
Once the hard drive is big enough, the challenge is coming up with an indexing system, or a really good search function.
The academic, who is head of the Brain, Behaviour and Cognition Progam at his university, added: Those are actually somewhat harder problems to solve neurocognitively compared with having a lot of storage space.

One big question is this: if the human brain was a computer, how much storage space would it really have? Would that depend on how intelligent the owner of the brain is? Im guessing mine can handle at least several thousand petabytes of puppy images, but is that true of everyone? How much data could the average human brain actually hold?
Brains arent exactly like computers, though both do handle many computations per second. It is estimated that the brain is capable of about 100 million MIPS . But theres no way to actually measure how much processing power a human brain has, and theres a similar problem when it comes to determining its storage space. There are a few theories, however.
One theory from an article on io9.com explains that there are about 100 billion neurons, and each is capable of making about 1,000 connections that represent 1,000 synapses . If you multiply each of the 100 billion neurons by the 1,000 synapses, you get 100 trillion data points, or 100 terabytes of info. The problem with this theory is that each synapse could potentially hold more or less than the one byte of information assumed in this formulation.

The human brain may be able to hold as much information in its memory as is contained on the entire Internet, new research suggests.
Researchers discovered that, unlike a classical computer that codes information as 0s and 1s, a brain cell uses 26 different ways to code its “bits.” They calculated that the brain could store 1 petabyte of information.
“This is a real bombshell in the field of neuroscience,” Terry Sejnowski, a biologist at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, said in a statement. “Our new measurements of the brains memory capacity increase conservative estimates by a factor of 10.”
What’s more, the human brain can store this mind-boggling amount of information while sipping just enough power to run a dim light bulb.
In particular, the team wanted to take a closer look at the hippocampus, a brain region that plays a key role in learning and short-term memory.
To untangle the mysteries of the mind, the research team took a teensy slice of a rat’s hippocampus, placed it in embalming fluid, then sliced it thinly with an extremely sharp diamond knife, a process akin to “slicing an orange,” Bartol said. The team then embedded the thin tissue into plastic, looked at it under a microscope and created digital images.
“You could fit 20 of these samples across the width of a single human hair,” Bartol told Live Science.
How Memories Are Formed Stored And Recalled
Since the 1940s scientists have surmised that memories are held within groups of neurons, or nerve cells, called cell assemblies. Those interconnected cells fire as a group in response to a specific stimulus, whether it’s your friend’s face or the smell of freshly baked bread. The more the neurons fire together, the more the cells’ interconnections strengthen. That way, when a future stimulus triggers the cells, it’s more likely that the whole assembly fires. The nerves’ collective activity transcribes what we experience as a memory. Scientists are still working through the details of how it works.
For a short-term memory to become a long-term memory, it must be strengthened for long-term storage, a process called memory consolidation. Consolidation is thought to take place by several processes. One, called long-term potentiation, consists of individual nerves modifying themselves to grow and talk to their neighboring nerves differently. That remodeling alters the nerves’ connections in the long term, which stabilizes the memory. All animals that have long-term memories use this same basic cellular machinery scientists worked out the details of long-term potentiation . However, not all long-term memories necessarily have to start as short-term memories.

Does Brain Size Matter
Obviously, not all people have the same size brain. Some are larger, and some are smaller. You might find yourself wondering if brain size might be linked to characteristics such as disability or intelligence.
