Scientists Discover Why The Human Brain Is So Big

Molecular switch makes human organ three times larger than great apes, study finds

It is one of the defining attributes of being human: when compared with our closest primate relatives, we have incredibly large brains.

Now scientists have shed light on the reasons for the difference, by collecting cells from humans, chimps and gorillas and turning them into lumps of brain in the laboratory.

Tests on the tiny brain organoids reveal a hitherto unknown molecular switch that controls brain growth and makes the human organ three times larger than brains in the great apes.

Tinker with the switch and the human brain loses its growth advantage, while the great ape brain can be made to grow more like a humans.

What we see is a difference in cellular behaviour very, very early on that allows the human brain to grow larger, said Dr Madeleine Lancaster, a developmental biologist at the Medical Research Councils Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. We are able to account for almost all of the size difference.

The healthy human brain typically reaches about 1,500cm3 in adulthood, roughly three times the size of the 500cm3 gorilla brain or the 400cm3 chimp brain. But working out why has been fraught with difficulty, not least because developing human and great ape brains cannot easily be studied.

    One such curiosity concerns synapses, connection spots where signals move between nerve cells. Usually, most message-sending axons touch a message-receiving dendrite just once. In the new dataset, about 90 percent of the connections were these one-hit contacts. Some pairs of cells have slightly more contacts. But every so often, researchers spotted cells that connect multiple times, including one pair that were linked by a whopping 19 synapses.

    Multiple connections have been spotted in mouse brains, though not quite as abundantly as in this human sample. And fly brains can also have many connections between cells, though theyre more dispersed than the newly described human connections, says neuroscientist Pat Rivlin of Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Va. There, Rivlin works on the FlyEM Project, which aims to create detailed maps of the fruit fly nervous system.

    The large dataset on the human brain provides a breakdown of just how common these types of connections are, says Reid. And that raises the question of what these extraordinarily strong synapses might be doing in the brain.

    When we talk about computers, we refer to carefully designed machines based on logic, reproducibility, predictability, and mathematics on the other hand, the human brain is a confused, seemingly random jumble of neurons that behave unpredictably.

      For the time being, people and computers seem to have complementary skills. This means that computers are very good at tasks that humans are bad at, and humans are exceptionally good at certain kinds of tasks that computers simply cannot perform yet.

      Computers are extremely fast, so when a task can be translated into an algorithm , a computer will typically accomplish it much more quickly and accurately than the average human. This kind of task includes mathematical calculations, and also repetitive tasks that humans quickly get bored by.

      Humans are spectacular at several things, including pattern recognition, language abilities, and creative thinking. Computers are rapidly improving at pattern recognition, but most programs still don’t do as well as children. A classic example of pattern recognition is face recognition. We are capable of recognizing faces in a variety of contexts. We can even recognize faces that have aged, or are disguised, or are obscured by facial hair.
