How One Woman Beat Terminal Cancer Naturally

How I Beat A Brain Tumor the Natural Way- No Chemo No Radiotherapy

Guest Writer for Wake Up World

What the caterpillar calls the end, the rest of the world calls a butterfly Lao Tzu.

The way I see it, there are two ways of experiencing cancer. The first is viewing it as a caterpillar would, as the ultimate end the finite. The second is viewing it as a butterfly would, as an experience that may let us fly free from the expectations and realities of the world to embrace our inner child, our creativity, our light.

Having been diagnosed with, and overcoming, a stage 4 brain tumor naturally, I believe that my experience is most aligned with that of the butterfly.

In the summer between Canada and Mexico occurs one of the worlds largest migrations of one of the worlds most delicate creatures, the Monarch butterfly. The Monarch migrates 2000 miles, spanning the life cycle of four generations to continue on its legacy. And if we think about the Monarchs journey and the many challenges it overcomes in such a fragile state, we can also see how this might directly relate to a person with cancer.

Having said this, when I first began unknowingly upon my journey with cancer, I would not have said that I believed that it would be possible to overcome without the benefits and help of modern science and medicine. I was a firm believer in all medicine had to offer, in taking Paracetamol for headaches, in going to the doctors when I was unwell, in scanning my body with immense amounts of radiation.

The result was amazing.

Were Taking Away Cancers Ability To Hide

Cancer researchers have already developed vaccines to treat cervical and prostate cancer. Now, University of Minnesota Health physician researchers are exploring whether a similar vaccination strategy may be effective against brain tumors.

Their efforts have focused on a molecule called CD200. CD200 is a protein produced by brain tumors that helps the cancer cells hide from a bodys immune system. Researchers from the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota have discovered that vaccines prepared from protein fragments of CD200 can reverse this process and program the patients immune system to fight off brain cancer. A clinical trial using CD200 is expected to open for patient enrollment in 2019.

For every adaptation that cancer cells make to cancer treatment, the immune system is capable of creating a counter-move, Chen said. Engaging this living, dynamic immune system will be key to ultimately curing brain cancer.

Having Certain Genetic Syndromes May Increase The Risk Of A Central Nervous System Tumor

Anything that increases your chance of getting a disease is called a risk factor. Having a risk factor does not mean that you will get cancer not having risk factors doesnt mean that you will not get cancer. Talk with your doctor if you think you may be at risk. There are few known risk factors for brain tumors. The following conditions may increase the risk of certain types of brain tumors:

A Chinese Herb Could Change Everything

According to a team of researchers from the University of Washington, artemesinin, a derivative of the wormwood plant that is commonly used in Chinese medicine, can kill 12,000 cancer cells for every healthy cell. And, it can do so heres the best part without harming normal cells! So far, this herb is not yet available for cancer treatment in humans, but it is in the works.

Focusing On Cancer Stem Cells

How To Prevent and Fight Cancer Naturally And Effectively ...

Like normal stem cells, cancer stem cells can give rise to many other types of cells. This means they have the ability to rebuild a tumor, even after most of it has been removed, leading to cancer relapse and metastasis.

The pharmaceutical industry has traditionally used established cancer cell lines to screen for new drugs, but these cell lines dont always reflect how cancer behaves in the body, explains Dr. Parada, whose lab is in the Sloan Kettering Institutes Cancer Biology and Genetics Program. Cell lines are idiosyncratic populations derived from a single cancer cell that are grown in the lab.

The therapies that are currently in use were designed to target cells that are rapidly dividing, he adds. But what weve concluded in our studies is that glioblastoma stem cells divide relatively slowly within tumors, leaving them unaffected by these treatments. Even if most of the tumor is destroyed, the stem cells allow it to regrow.

Glioblastoma is driven primarily by a small number of gene mutations, including three genes that have been used to model the tumor in mice. The investigators in Dr. Paradas lab demonstrated that when mice were engineered to carry these three mutations, 100% of them developed glioblastoma.

Radiation Therapy For Brain Cancer

Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill tumor cells, stopping them from growing and spreading.

  • Radiation therapy may be used for people who cannot have surgery. Itâs also used after surgery to kill any tumor cells that may remain.
  • Radiation therapy is a local therapy. This means that it usually does not harm cells elsewhere in the body or even elsewhere in the brain.

Radiation can be given in the following ways:

  • External radiation uses a high-energy beam of radiation targeted at the tumor. The beam travels through the skin, the skull, healthy brain tissue, and other tissues to get to the tumor. The treatments are usually given 5 days. Each treatment takes only a few minutes.
  • Internal or implant radiation uses a tiny radioactive capsule that is placed inside the tumor. The radiation from the capsule destroys the tumor. The radioactivity of the capsule decreases a little bit each day and is carefully calculated to run out when the optimal dose has been given. You need to stay in the hospital for several days while receiving this treatment.
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery destroys a brain tumor without opening the skull. A single large dose of high-energy radiation beams is trained on the tumor from different angles. The radiation destroys the tumor. Stereotactic radiosurgery has fewer complications than regular surgery and a shorter recovery time.

The side effects of radiation include:

Mom Stuns Doctors Beats Deadliest Brain Cancer

Arizona woman diagnosed with two brain tumors, but now cancer-free.

Kennedy Family Loses Patriarch

Jan. 7, 20123, 2013 — Heather Knies was given a death sentence at the age of 24. She battled not one, but two brain tumors — one of them a grade 4 glioblastoma, the same kind of cancer that killed Sen. Edward Kennedy in 2010.

But today, six years later, she is cancer-free, and her doctors at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona cannot explain it. Her latest MRI is clean, and she is neurologically intact.

The now-32-year-old Knies has not only outlived her life expectancy, she has married and become a mother. Her successful parenthood is remarkable, as intense radiation and chemotherapy can render cancer patients infertile.

Knies’s daughter, Zoe, who is 7 months old, celebrated her first Christmas in December.

Knies’s doctors say that in rare instances, a patient can break the “biological rules.” But most often in those cases, the initial pathology of the tumor was suspect.

In her case, the pathology was “not controversial,” according to her surgeon, Dr. Robert Spetzler, director of the Barrow Neurological Institute at Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.

In his 35 years as a neurosurgeon in the United States, Spetzler said he has never seen such a triumph against a stage 4 glioblastoma.

“It’s one of the most malignant tumors there is,” he said. “Invariably it will come back and pop up somewhere else in the brain and it’s uniformly fatal.”

What Is Radiation Treatment For Brain Tumors

Radiation therapy kills brain tumor cells with high-energy x-rays, gamma rays, or protons.

Radiation therapy usually follows surgery. The radiation kills tumor cells that may remain in the area. Sometimes, people who can’t have surgery have radiation therapy instead.

Doctors use external and internal types of radiation therapy to treat brain tumors:

  • Internal radiation therapy : Internal radiation isn’t commonly used for treating brain tumors and is under study. The radiation comes from radioactive material usually contained in very small implants called seeds. The seeds are placed inside the brain and give off radiation for months. They don’t need to be removed once the radiation is gone.
  • Some people have no or few side effects after treatment. Rarely, people may have nausea for several hours after external radiation therapy. The health care team can suggest ways to help you cope with this problem. Radiation therapy also may cause you to become very tired with each radiation treatment. Resting is important, but doctors usually advise people to try to stay as active as they can.

Also, external radiation therapy commonly causes hair loss from the part of the head that was treated. Hair usually grows back within a few months. Radiation therapy also may make the skin on the scalp and ears red, dry, and tender. The health care team can suggest ways to relieve these problems.

Questions to ask your doctor before starting radiation treatment

Should You Ask For A Second Opinion Before You Start Treatment For A Brain Tumor

How Susan Rooney Beat Stage 4 Brain Cancer

Before starting treatment, you might want a second opinion about your diagnosis and treatment plan. Some people worry that the doctor will be offended if they ask for a second opinion. Usually the opposite is true. Most doctors welcome a second opinion. And many health insurance companies will pay for a second opinion if you or your doctor requests it. Some companies require a second opinion.

If you get a second opinion, the doctor may agree with your first doctor’s diagnosis and treatment plan. Or the second doctor may suggest another approach. Either way, you’ll have more information and perhaps a greater sense of control. You can feel more confident about the decisions you make, knowing that you’ve looked at your options.

It may take some time and effort to gather your medical records and see another doctor. In many cases, it’s not a problem to take several weeks to get a second opinion. The delay in starting treatment usually won’t make treatment less effective. To make sure, you should discuss this delay with your doctor. Some people with a brain tumor need treatment right away.

There are many ways to find a doctor for a second opinion. You can ask your doctor, a local or state medical society, a nearby hospital, or a medical school for names of specialists.

Also, you can request a consultation with specialists at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

As you well know, diagnosis of cancer, or even a suspicion of cancer causes a great deal of fear.. You reflect on friends or family who died of cancer. Of celebrities who died from cancer. How every TV show or movie featuring someone with cancer has that person dying at the end.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Doctors do their best, but it may not be enough. When doctors have not seen success with their treatments in this situation, they know what they have to offer is not going to work. This does not mean that you canât survive Brain Cancer. You have to either supplement what your doctors have for you, or go a different route entirely if they have nothing to offer.

There are natural and effective products available that are proving to be powerful cancer healers. Not the everyday, run of the mill supplements which sometimes work, but the majority of the time fail. The overwhelming feedback from our research is that when the right actions and supplements are taken, even aggressive, tough cancers, such as Brain cancer, can be defeated.

    There is hope.

Another New Immunotherapy Drug Uses A Cold

University of Minnesota Health physician researchers are testing whether immunotherapy can be effective against brain cancer when combined with a genetically engineered form of the virus that causes the common cold.

The drug therapy, developed by DNATrix, is also injected during surgery to remove a brain tumor. The virus in the drug targets cancer cells natural vulnerabilities and triggers inflammation where those cells reside in the body. After surgery, the patient is treated with state-of-the-art immunotherapy that wipes out the remaining brain tumor cells. Early studies show this drug boosted the three-year survival to 20 percent.

Both the Toca511 and the DNATrix virus exert their effects specifically on the brain tumor cells, Chen said. For this reason, we observed very little toxicity from these therapies. By treating our patients with these selective therapies, we preserve the quality of life for our brain tumor patients.

What To Expect At Your Provider’s Office

    Pin on Beat Brain Cancer

If you have symptoms of a brain tumor, you should see your health care provider immediately. Your provider will ask about your personal and family medical history and perform a complete physical and neurologic exam. This includes checks for alertness, muscle strength, coordination, reflexes, and response to pain, and an eye exam to look for swelling caused by a tumor pressing on the nerve that connects the eye and the brain.

Your provider may order a computed tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging scan, magnetic resonance spectroscopy scan, or single-photon emission computed tomography scan. A positron emission tomography scan or a combination PET-CT scan may help doctors assess the metabolic effects of cancer. Additional tests may include skull x-ray, brain scan, angiogram or arteriogram, and a myelogram . If cancer is present, others who may become involved in your care include a neurosurgeon, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, nurse, dietitian, social worker, physical therapist, occupational therapist, and speech therapist.

    What Are My Treatment Options

A variety of therapies are used to treat brain tumors. The type of treatment recommended depends on the size and type of the tumor, its growth rate, brain location, and the general health of the patient. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted biological agents, or a combination of these. Surgical resection is generally the first treatment recommendation to reduce pressure in the brain rapidly. This website focuses on radiation therapy for brain tumors.

In the past two decades, researchers have developed new techniques of delivering radiation that target the brain tumor while protecting nearby healthy tissues. These treatments include brachytherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy and radiosurgery.

Radiation therapy may be advised for tumors that are sensitive to this treatment. Conventional radiation therapy uses external beams of x-rays, gammarays or protons aimed at the tumor to kill cancer cells and shrink brain tumors. The therapy is usually given over a period of several weeks. Whole brain radiation therapy is an option in the case of multiple tumors or tumors that cannot be easily targeted with focal treatment.

    Types of radiation therapy include:

A New Clinical Trial Infects Cancer Cells With A Virus That Activates An Immune Response

Immunotherapy is treatment that activates a part of the bodys natural immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. A recently developed immunotherapy drug combination may prove to be an effective treatment for glioblastoma.

What is immunotherapy? What our video to learn more about this leading-edge cancer treatment technique.

Toca 511 is an engineered virus that selectively infects glioblastoma cells. The virus is injected directly into the patients brain following surgery to remove the bulk of the tumor. Once the virus has replicated and spread throughout the remaining cancerous cells, the patient is given Toca FC, a follow-up drug. Toca FC combines with Toca 511 to destroy the infected cancer cells. The reaction also activates the bodys immune system, which then helps prevent the cancer cells from growing back.

Clinical trials using Toca 511 and Toca FC show exceptional promise, Chen said. In the studies, where enrolled patients are expected to live 4-9 months, 20 percent of patients treated with both survived three or more years. Because of the results, Toca 511 and Toca FC have received a Breakthrough Therapy designation from the Food and Drug Administration

The clinical trial is currently available to brain tumor patients at the University of Minnesota.
