Science Must Overcome Its Racist Legacy

How to Change Your Brain Waves

In the first NatureEditorial ever to be signed by guest editors, four authors explore the history of racist beliefs in science. Political scientist Melissa Nobles, epidemiologist and science-inclusion leader Chad Womack, geneticist Ambroise Wonkam and environmentalist Elizabeth Wathuti will advise on the production of a series of special issues on racism in science, the first of which is due to be published later this year.

The journey to recognizing and removing racism will take time, because meaningful change does not happen quickly, they write. It will be difficult, because it will require powerful institutions to accept that they need to be accountable to those with less power. It will be rewarding because it will enrich science. It is essential because it is about truth, justice and reconciliation tenets on which all societies must be founded. As scientists, we know that where there are problems in the historical record, scientific rigour and scientific integrity demand that they be acknowledged, and, if necessary, corrected.

Biocybernaut Change Your Brainwaves Change Your Life

A businessman on an adventure to change the lives of millions of people around the world.

Caffeine, alcohol, garlic and onions off the menu. They affect your brainwaves apparently. No mobile phones or watches allowed during the training period. The Biocybernaut Institute experience takes you out of time because, according to Ram Dass, if you want to live high you have to live outside of time.

Studies have shown that Biocybernaut’s brainwave neurofeedback training results in significant reductions in depression, fatigue, tension, anger, anxiety and hostility. Stanford Research Institute scientists who did the Alpha One Training reported an average of 50% increase in creativity. Another study measured the brain waves of beginners, intermediate, and advanced Zen meditators. The brain waves of Biocybernaut’s trainees were compared to the brain waves of Zen meditators at each level of experience. Brain wave patterns found only in Zen meditators with 21-40 years of meditation experience were found in participants after their 7 days of alpha brain wave training. If that wasnt enough, evidence shows a +11.7 point increase in IQ stable 12 months out.

No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it – Albert Einstein

But, as they say at Biocybernaut, the price of liberty is constant vigilance of the ego, and the final words of the training continue to resonate with me – Be vigilant, be vigilant, be vigilant.

Meditation: Learn To Slow Down Your Brain Waves

Calm downliterallywith meditation.

We can be in one of two states: either the mind is running us or we are running our mind.

There are five major categories of brain waves, each corresponding to different activities we do. Meditation enables us to move from higher frequency brain waves to lower frequency and calm the mind. Slower wavelengths allows for more time between thoughts which then offers us more opportunities for to skillfully choose the thoughts we invest in. Lets break down the five categories of brain waves:

  • Gamma State The brain waves are at frequencies ranging from approximately 30 to 100Hz. This is the state of hyperactivity in the brain and active learning. Gamma state is the most opportune time to retain information. This is why Tony Robbins and other educators have audiences jumping up and down or dancing around to increase the likelihood of permanent assimilation of information and lasting change in ones state. If overstimulated, it can lead to anxiety.
  • Beta State This is where we function for most of the day. Beta is associated with the alert mindstate of the prefrontal cortex. Brain wave frequencies in this state range from 13 to 30Hz and this is a state of the working or thinking mind: analytical, planning, assessing and categorizing.

The current buzzwords are Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease, as well as traumatic brain injuries. But scientists are also looking at the spinal cord and peripheral nervous systems. As far as I am concerned, since the brain is the de facto center of decision for so many processes, any of them could be targeted.

What inspired me to write a post about knowing how to change brain waves at will?

A memory! As a young boy, I saw a magazine picture of a man with electrodes strapped to his head. I thought the researchers were reading his mind!

But as I learned more about medical procedures, I realized what I had seen was more likely, a man getting an EEG of his brain waves. An EEG detects the brains electrical activity through small metal electrodes attached to specifying spots on the skull.

The first encephalogram occurred on July 6, 1924, during a surgical procedure on a teenager. When the neurosurgeon, Dr. Nikolai Guleke, reported his findings in 1929, he referred to the electrical frequencies as beta and alpha waves.

For the next 40 years, EEGs were a go-to diagnostic tool for diagnosing brain injuries and neurological disorders. They lost their preferred status with the arrival of the computer tomography scan but remain in use for various tests and research projects.

Over time, researchers have identified three more brain waves and how they affect us, for a total of five.

How Many Types Of Brain Waves Are There

There are five different types of brain waves ranging from low to high frequency:

    • Delta brain waves happen to be the slowest and are generated when in deep meditation and dreamless sleep. It contains healing and regeneration abilities when the individual is in this state.
    • Theta waves also occur when you are asleep and during relaxation. These brain waves are indicative of dreams, inner focus as well as vivid imagery
    • Alpha waves of occur in your thoughtful and quiet times. They indicate that the brain is in a state of resting.
    • Beta waves are probably the most common pattern in the normal waking state. Its often present when a person is alert, focused or in a problem-solving state of mind
    • Gamma waves are the fastest and are associated with higher levels of consciousness.

So to sum it up, these are the 5 brain waves:

    • Delta Brain Waves
    • Theta brain waves
    • Alpha brain waves
    • Beta brain waves
    • Gamma brain waves

    What Are Brainwaves Anyway

Contrary to what you might think, brainwaves arent a physical thingtheyre a measurement of activity thats going on within your brain.

The brain is an electrochemical organ, meaning that if you hooked up enough wires to your scalp, you might be able to power a light bulb, explains Winters. This electrical communication happens through neurons, which are specialized brain cells that are responsible for transmitting information through the body in both chemical and electrical forms. And the electrical activity that emanates from these neurons communicating is measured in the form of brainwaves.

Up until recently, brainwave measurement was pretty much restricted to a medical or lab setting, as it requires tools like electroencephalography whereby sensors attached to the scalp read the brainwaves, similar to how your heart-rate monitor reads your pulseor neuroimaging, which scans the bran using magnetic resonance imaging or other technology. But, as mentioned before, devices like the Muse headband or Emotiv Insight tracker allow you to get a read on your brainwaves at home, although Winters says theyre not nearly as advanced as the ones used clinically.

Can You Control Alpha Brain Waves

Alpha waves are linked with relaxed mental states and this is why lots of experts believe that increasing alpha waves can help reduce anxiety and stress.

It may also help you stay relaxed for longer. Alpha waves are also believed to boost creativity.

So considering the many benefits of alpha waves or being in the alpha state, youre probably wondering how you can induce this state of mind and reap the benefits:

Can Meditation Affect Our Brain Waves

Brain Waves: How To Change Them For Transformation

Yes, with the use of EEG machines and other brain wave sensors, a variety of meditation methods have been proven to change and direct our brain waves.

Due to recent advancements in technology, we are now able to study the effects of various meditation techniques on our brain waves. The benefits of meditation vary, depending on the meditation technique you are practising.

For example, most forms of open awareness meditations like mindfulness or body scanning will lower your brain waves to a relaxed Delta state.

Focused attention meditation such as mantra or breath awareness will raise your brain waves to the higher Alpha range.

Deep meditation techniques like Yoga Nidra or hypnosis will bring your brain waves down into theta ranges, where they will slowly fall over time, leading you into a state akin to a dreamless sleep.

It is important to understand how brain waves work during meditation and when you practice your preferred meditation technique.

Understanding Brainwaves To Expand Our Consciousness

The human brain is a complex entity constantly at work, sending electrical signals, communicating, building new neural connections and so on. This electrical activity generated by the brain, also known as brainwaves, reflect our state of mind. Reality is not based on outside influences but is an internal process based on our thoughts, perception and emotions. If we deepen our understanding of these brainwave frequencies, we can control our reality.

There are five different kinds of brainwaves Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta and Gamma

It is completely a natural biological occurrence in every human being to experience these different states at various times in a day, and generally one state is dominant.

Did you know that each brainwave has its own set of characteristics representing a unique state of consciousness? Each brainwave state occur in a specific frequency range measured in cycles per second .

Each type of brainwave played a critical role in our mental development during our childhood. And today, they play an important role in maintaining our health and vitality as adults. Lets take a look at the different brain wave states and the associated benefits and experiences

    Water Powered The Tonga Eruption

Researchers are starting to piece together why the Hunga TongaHunga Haapai eruption on 15 January was so explosive. Evidence gathered by two groups suggests that when the Tongan volcanos centre collapsed, it spewed an enormous amount of magma that reacted violently with water. Youve got 20-degree water and youve got 1,110-degree magma coming directly in contact, says volcanologist Shane Cronin, who co-authored one study about the event. The caldera was just shallow enough that the water pressure did not suppress the blast, but deep enough that the magma was fed huge amounts of water to power the interactions. This resulted in several large blasts and hundreds of much smaller explosions every minute, which eyewitnesses reported hearing as an unusual crackling and noise like artillery fire.

    Tips For Increasing Alpha Waves

    Brain

Biofeedback training is one way to learn how to consciously induce alpha waves. While researchers continue to explore this as a therapeutic treatment for depression and anxiety, there are things that you can do to help improve your ability to experience this type of brain wave. Increase alpha wave activity by:

    • Meditating: Meditation has a number of health benefits and has been linked to increased alpha waves.
    • Deep breathing: Deep breathing can be an effective way to combat feelings of anxiety. Research also suggests that it may help boost alpha activity in key areas of the brain.
    • Practicing mindfulness: Studies have shown that mindfulness training can lead to increased alpha wave activity, and some research has suggested that this practice may help people who are experiencing chronic pain, anxiety, or depression.
    • Yoga: The relaxed state associated with alpha waves may increase when performing yoga and some research has suggested that regular yoga practice may enhance alpha activity in the brain.
    • Aerobics: Some researchers suggest that aerobic exercise can also increase alpha wave activity.

While alpha waves have promise for reducing the symptoms of anxiety and depression, they can also cause problems if they happen when they are not supposed to. For example, while alpha waves are often present right before you fall asleep, they should not happen while you are asleep. When alpha waves do occur during sleep, they can contribute to sleep disorders.

How Does Meditation Affect Our Brains

Previous studies into the effects of meditation on our brains indicate that when our brain is functioning in gamma frequencies, it is able to create new pathways in the brain for neurons to flow between. This indicates that our information is being communicated in a different way than normal. Whats more, meditation can reduce the size of the amygdala, the region of the brain responsible for fear, stress and anger. This brain function change can only be seen as a positive.

What Are Brain Waves And How Can We Change Them With Meditation

    • Griff

Our brains are a constant hub of activity, neurons firing to neurons, keeping all our mental activities and bodily function that we take granted working like clockwork.

When different brain regions, for example, the prefrontal cortex, begin to fire their neurons in synchronicity, this is called neural oscillation or brain waves.

Using EEG machines, we can measure the brains electrical activity and see whats going on in a unified way.

We can then use this information to discover which types of brain waves correspond to different mental activity levels and learn how to provide insight into our moods, energy, and thoughts both consciously and subconsciously.

    What Are Brain Waves

Our brain is composed of billions of neurons where each neuron connects to many other neurons in the brain. Whenever we perform cognitive activities such as thinking, reasoning, perceiving, or decision-making, the corresponding group of neurons are lit up inside the brain, i.e. electrical signals pass back and forth between them.

For example, when you drive to work, you dont have to think about the route every time because your brain is intelligent enough to light up the corresponding neurons in the brain that tells you where to go.

When these neuron cells are active they pass electric pulses back and forth and send messages to each other. The network of cells synchronizes their firing and this becomes a repeating cycle known as the brainwave.

Brainwaves, also known as neural oscillations, are the way scientists measure the functioning of the brain. This electrical activity within the brain is quite strong and is measured by an instrument called EEG .

In this technique, electrodes are placed on top of the scalp where they detect the electrical pulses with the help of EEG. These electrical pulses are further visually analyzed on a display monitor. This technique is known as Electroencephalography.

So the next question is how are these brain waves measured? They are measured as the number of times the neurons are firing electric pulses per second. These cycles are measured in Hertz, or Hz in short.

Primarily, there are 5 types of brain waves:

  • Delta Brainwaves
  • What Are The Benefits Of Gamma Waves

What Are Brain Waves? How do Brainwaves Affect Us and How do We Change Them?

Gamma waves are evidence that youve achieved peak concentration. In other words, when youre intensely focused and your brain is very actively engaged in solving a problem, this is when your brain is likely producing gamma waves. They help you process information.

Research suggests that people with learning difficulties or impaired mental processing may not produce as many gamma waves.

Some Tips To Begin A Meditation Practice

Starting something new is hard to do. After all, were deeply held to the inertia of the various facets of life that make our life. For something new to happen, some room has to be made available for it and some entrainment needs to be honed .

So, I say, keep your beginning meditation practice simple and short. That way, youre more likely to do it, and it will have the chance to pull you in deeper. Gradually, effortlessly, youll be spending more time in meditation cranking out those Alpha and Theta brainwaves and making your life better.

    Consider doing this meditation practice:

    • Set a timer for five minutes. Now, you dont have to struggle with how long you have to sit there meditating, for youll know that by design the session will be short and doable.
    • Sit anyway thats comfortable, as long as your spine, neck and head are upright and in alignment.
    • Place your attention on your breath and gradually make the inhalations and exhalations longer. Do this through your nose. Pause after inhalation slowly release. Pause after exhalation slowly inhale.
    • Once you have this relaxed, paced breathing on autopilot, bring your attention to wherever you have the most discomfort in your body. Visualize breathing your favorite color into that spot. When you can no longer do this without distraction, move to another part of your body.
