We can be in one of two states: either the mind is running us or we are running our mind.

There are five major categories of brain waves, each corresponding to different activities we do. Meditation enables us to move from higher frequency brain waves to lower frequency and calm the mind. Slower wavelengths allows for more time between thoughts which then offers us more opportunities for to skillfully choose the thoughts we invest in. Lets break down the five categories of brain waves:

  • Gamma State The brain waves are at frequencies ranging from approximately 30 to 100Hz. This is the state of hyperactivity in the brain and active learning. Gamma state is the most opportune time to retain information. This is why Tony Robbins and other educators have audiences jumping up and down or dancing around to increase the likelihood of permanent assimilation of information and lasting change in ones state. If overstimulated, it can lead to anxiety.
  • Beta State This is where we function for most of the day. Beta is associated with the alert mindstate of the prefrontal cortex. Brain wave frequencies in this state range from 13 to 30Hz and this is a state of the working or thinking mind: analytical, planning, assessing and categorizing.

    What inspired me to write a post about knowing how to change brain waves at will?

    A memory! As a young boy, I saw a magazine picture of a man with electrodes strapped to his head. I thought the researchers were reading his mind!

    But as I learned more about medical procedures, I realized what I had seen was more likely, a man getting an EEG of his brain waves. An EEG detects the brains electrical activity through small metal electrodes attached to specifying spots on the skull.

    The first encephalogram occurred on July 6, 1924, during a surgical procedure on a teenager. When the neurosurgeon, Dr. Nikolai Guleke, reported his findings in 1929, he referred to the electrical frequencies as beta and alpha waves.

    For the next 40 years, EEGs were a go-to diagnostic tool for diagnosing brain injuries and neurological disorders. They lost their preferred status with the arrival of the computer tomography scan but remain in use for various tests and research projects.

    Over time, researchers have identified three more brain waves and how they affect us, for a total of five.

    How Many Types Of Brain Waves Are There

    There are five different types of brain waves ranging from low to high frequency:

    • Delta brain waves happen to be the slowest and are generated when in deep meditation and dreamless sleep. It contains healing and regeneration abilities when the individual is in this state.
    • Theta waves also occur when you are asleep and during relaxation. These brain waves are indicative of dreams, inner focus as well as vivid imagery
    • Alpha waves of occur in your thoughtful and quiet times. They indicate that the brain is in a state of resting.
    • Beta waves are probably the most common pattern in the normal waking state. Its often present when a person is alert, focused or in a problem-solving state of mind
    • Gamma waves are the fastest and are associated with higher levels of consciousness.

    What Are Brainwaves Anyway

    Contrary to what you might think, brainwaves arent a physical thingtheyre a measurement of activity thats going on within your brain.

    The brain is an electrochemical organ, meaning that if you hooked up enough wires to your scalp, you might be able to power a light bulb, explains Winters. This electrical communication happens through neurons, which are specialized brain cells that are responsible for transmitting information through the body in both chemical and electrical forms. And the electrical activity that emanates from these neurons communicating is measured in the form of brainwaves.

    Up until recently, brainwave measurement was pretty much restricted to a medical or lab setting, as it requires tools like electroencephalography whereby sensors attached to the scalp read the brainwaves, similar to how your heart-rate monitor reads your pulseor neuroimaging, which scans the bran using magnetic resonance imaging or other technology. But, as mentioned before, devices like the Muse headband or Emotiv Insight tracker allow you to get a read on your brainwaves at home, although Winters says theyre not nearly as advanced as the ones used clinically.

    What Are Brain Waves

    Our brain is composed of billions of neurons where each neuron connects to many other neurons in the brain. Whenever we perform cognitive activities such as thinking, reasoning, perceiving, or decision-making, the corresponding group of neurons are lit up inside the brain, i.e. electrical signals pass back and forth between them.

    For example, when you drive to work, you dont have to think about the route every time because your brain is intelligent enough to light up the corresponding neurons in the brain that tells you where to go.

    Starting something new is hard to do. After all, were deeply held to the inertia of the various facets of life that make our life. For something new to happen, some room has to be made available for it and some entrainment needs to be honed .

    So, I say, keep your beginning meditation practice simple and short. That way, youre more likely to do it, and it will have the chance to pull you in deeper. Gradually, effortlessly, youll be spending more time in meditation cranking out those Alpha and Theta brainwaves and making your life better.

    Consider doing this meditation practice:

    • Set a timer for five minutes. Now, you dont have to struggle with how long you have to sit there meditating, for youll know that by design the session will be short and doable.
    • Sit anyway thats comfortable, as long as your spine, neck and head are upright and in alignment.
    • Place your attention on your breath and gradually make the inhalations and exhalations longer. Do this through your nose. Pause after inhalation slowly release. Pause after exhalation slowly inhale.
    • Once you have this relaxed, paced breathing on autopilot, bring your attention to wherever you have the most discomfort in your body. Visualize breathing your favorite color into that spot. When you can no longer do this without distraction, move to another part of your body.
