Battling The Brain Parasite

Do You Have Brain Worms? Learn What I Did.

UVAs Department of Neuroscience and BIG center have in recent years completely rewritten our understanding of the brains relationship with the bodys immune system. For decades, textbooks taught that the brain was disconnected from the immune system. UVA research, however, showed that was not the case, to the shock of the scientific community. Many researchers are now exploring the implications of that major discovery.

One area of focus is microglia and their role in defending the brain. This has been a difficult question to answer because microglia are closely related to other immune cells elsewhere in the body. Until recently, laboratory tools made to target microglia have also targeted these other cells, making it hard to distinguish between the two.

UVA researcher Samantha J. Batista, a graduate student in Harris lab, used an elegant approach that leveraged the long-lived nature of microglia to understand their role in brain infection. She and her colleagues found that infection caused microglia to die in an inflammatory fashion a way that the closely related immune cells do not.

The microglia burst, the researchers determined, to recruit immune cells called macrophages to control the Toxoplasma gondii infection. This finding helps explain why most people have no trouble controlling the parasite, while some especially people who are immunocompromised can become very sick.

How Do You Prevent A Brain Freeze

For advice, we talked to Eric Fredette, a long-time Flavor Guru for Ben and Jerrys. As a Flavor Guru, his job is part food scientist, part mad scientist, and a full-time thinker about ice cream, all day, every day. This is a man who knows about brain freezes. For him, its a work hazard.

His advice, boiled down, reads as follows: Stir up the ice cream to warm it slightly. Think creemee consistency! Plus, warmer things taste better, so a double benefit. And, make sure to keep ice cream off of the roof of your mouth. Sometimes, this can be achieved by flipping the spoon over and putting ice cream on your tongue vs. the roof of your mouth.

So his advice comes in twofold, the first part we can refer to as the Warm-Before-Chewing method. Its simple, self-explanatory, but also highly effective. You can microwave your ice cream, or even add warm toppings to make it sensible, and sassy at the same time.

In essence, you are warming the ice cream in your mouth before it hits the back of your throat. This may seem illogical! But only if you dont know that brain freezes happen in your throat, and not your mouth. And unless you skimmed down to this part , you should know that by now.

Can Tapeworm Infections Be Prevented

To help protect your family from tapeworm infections:

  • Wash your hands well and often with soap and warm water, especially after using the bathroom and before touching food. Teach your kids to do the same.
  • Cook meat until juices run clear and the centers are no longer pink.
  • Cook fish until it is solid in color and flakes when separated with a fork.
  • Freeze meat for 24 hours before cooking to kill any tapeworm eggs.

If you live in or travel to areas where tapeworm infections are common:

  • Wash and cook all fruits and vegetables with safe water.
  • Avoid raw or undercooked meat and fish, raw fruits and vegetables that you didn’t peel yourself, and any food from street vendors.
  • Drink only water that’s been boiled for at least a minute, bottled water, or other beverages in bottles and cans.
  • At restaurants, ask if their water and ice are filtered.

Parasites That Want To Invade Your Brain

They just want a nice home! And to destroy you.

ByShaunacy Ferro | Published Aug 19, 2013 6:30 PM

In the past month, two different 12-year-olds have made headlines after being hospitalized with an extremely rare, horrifying infection: the brain-eating amoeba.

Found mostly in warm freshwater lakes, rivers and hotsprings, Naegleria fowleri can travel up a persons nose and into the brain, where it goes to work destroying brain tissue. Most cases in the U.S.32 were reported between 2001 and 2010have occurred in the warm Southeast, according to CNN.

The Florida Department of Health issued a warning against people swimming in warm, shallow water after seventh grader Zachary Reyna contracted the parasite Aug. 3.

Naegleria Fowleri Lifecycles

Unfortunately, as much as wed like brain-eating parasites to be confined to sci-fi fever dreams, Naegleria fowleri isnt the only micro-organism that, when given the chance, will invade the human cranium. Not for the faint of heart, here are a few more to lose sleep over:

What Happens In Severe Cases

Human Tapeworm In Stool

In severe cases, a doctor may recommend that you have an expert go in and surgically remove the tapeworm. This is especially true if the tapeworm has made its way to your brain. Yes, that is terrifyingly a thing that can happen.

In other cases, a doctor might recommend that you use a strong anti-parasitic drug like biltricide.

Drugs like this can cause some acute side effects, however, including:

  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Sweating

Now that you know how to get rid of tapeworms naturally, you may wish to speak with your doctor about whether or not some of those methods are suitable for you.

Risks And Side Effects

Symptoms caused by parasites can range from mild to very serious, depending on the type of organism and the individual whos affected. Those with compromised immune systems or other gastrointestinal conditions are at the greatest risk for developing serious illnesses when they come into contact with a parasite, so its always important to get professional help if this applies to you.

What types of side effects might you encounter when following a parasite cleanse protocol? Its possible that you may feel run down or have digestive issues for a couple weeks while recovering.

If you lose your appetite, have diarrhea, and arent able to drink or eat much, fatigue can be common. Make sure to keep drinking fluids, and try to eat smaller meals regularly to keep your energy up.

Not all of the herbal supplements mentioned above are safe for every person, so be careful about how you treat parasites if you take any prescription medications. Speak with your doctor before beginning to use the supplements mentioned above if youre on daily medications.

Also avoid giving these supplements to children, and dont use them if youre pregnant or breastfeeding since it isnt entirely known how safe this is.

Preventing Tapeworms In Humans

Tapeworms are uncommon in the U.S. today because of laws on feeding practices and inspection of the animals we use for food.

You can further reduce your risk of tapeworms by washing your hands before and after using the toilet and by following thesefood safety tips.

  • Avoid raw fish and meat.
  • Thoroughly cook meat to temperatures of at least 145 degrees Fahrenheit for whole cuts of meat and to at least 160 degrees F for ground meat and poultry. Then, allow the meat to rest for three minutes before carving or consuming the heat continues killing pathogens during that time.
  • Freezing meat to -4 degrees F for at least 24 hours also kills tapeworm eggs.
  • When traveling in undeveloped countries, cook fruits and vegetables with boiled or chemically-treated water before eating.
  • Wash hands with soap and hot water before preparing or eating foods.

Are Children More Susceptible To Brain Freeze

While children tend to experience brain freeze more often than adults, they arent necessarily more susceptible. More likely, young people experience brain or chest freeze more frequently because they are more likely to gulp down cold foods faster than adults. They may also eat cold foods such as ice cream more frequently.

From our How To Do Everything podcast:

If youve ever inhaled a slurpee too fast, youre likely familiar with sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia, which is another word for ice cream headache, as well as an extremely impressive Scrabble play. Chicago pediatrician Dr. Peter Lechman told us why it happens:

The roof of your mouth gets cold, which causes immediate constriction of the blood vessels. As soon as those blood vessels constrict, your body reacts by trying to dilate them very quickly in order to get more warm blood to the area and heat it up. Pain receptors in the roof of your mouth send a message up to your brain telling you youve got something bad going on in the roof of your mouth. And it causes you to experience an intense headache in your forehead.

So, is an ice cream headache your bodys way of protecting you from some terrible ice-cream-in-your-mouth-related mortal danger? Says Lechman:

No. is overreacting.

Assuming the occasional ice cream headache is an inevitability, how do you get rid of it? At this point, Dr. Lechman starts sounding a lot less like a medical professional.

Get the ice cream out of your cakehole, and drink a warm liquid or put your tongue at the roof of your mouth to heat up the area.

Problem solved. Go forth and enjoy that mid-January Choco Taco with gusto.

What Are Intestinal Worms

They are best known as parasites located in the gastrointestinal tract. There are many types, but the most common are whipworm, tapeworm, pinworm, and roundworm. Would you believe that some worms can suck blood? Well, they do, and it promotes loss of blood and iron deficiency.

In the process, the immune system takes a hit and your body becomes prone to simple infections. And we think that mosquitoes are the only organisms to suck blood and swat them to death? Is it not true?

Diagnosis Of Brain Parasites In Dogs

If your dog is being affected by the symptoms above, make an appointment with your veterinarian. Once you reach your veterinarians office, he will take a closer look at your pets symptoms. He will do a complete physical examination, as well as blood testing, urinalysis, and biochemistry profile. This will give your medical professional some baseline data to go by before he performs any other tests.

He may ask you questions pertaining to your dogs symptoms, such as when they began. Information about the environment and lifestyle of your companion will be noted, as will ask any other questions he feels are necessary in order to help him understand what may be the issue.

Your veterinarian may then do other tests, such as imaging of the chest, ultrasound of the abdominal area, and aspirations of his lymph nodes to look for any infections that are causing his encephalitis. The main mode of diagnosis to diagnose your dogs encephalitis is by performing a spinal tap.

The fluid that surrounds the spinal cord in the brain is known as spinal fluid, or cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid can be tested to gather information on what is happening in your dogs nervous system. If your dog has a significant increase in white blood cells, your dog will be diagnosed with the encephalitis. Your veterinarian will determine if your dogs overall health and condition will allow for a low-risk spinal tap.

Doctors Expected A Brain Tumor It Was A Tapeworm

June 10, 2019 — Rachel Palma had been having odd symptoms for months — hallucinations, dropping things, trouble speaking. Her many visits to the emergency room didnât solve things. Finally, a brain scan revealed what seemed to be the cause: a marble-sized tumor. In September 2018, doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City scheduled Rachel for surgery, expecting to find cancer.

“We did a small dissection of the brain tissue, and what we saw was a very well encapsulated, firm lesion that was ovoid,” Jonathan Rasouli, MD, chief resident of neurosurgery at Mount Sinai, told CNN. “It looked like a quail egg: Same size, same look, same firmness.”

When they sliced it open under a microscope, they found a baby tapeworm.

After living with the idea of malignant brain cancer, a parasite turned out to be a relief for Palma, 42, of Middletown, NY. âOf course I was grossed out,â she told The Washington Post. âBut of course, I was also relieved. It meant that no further treatment was necessary.â

Doctors diagnosed Palma with neurocysticercosis, a parasitic infection of the brain that can happen if you swallow the microscopic eggs of the pork tapeworm. It can cause seizures and even death.

âThe suspicion of neurocysticercosis in someone who hasnât traveled is low,â says Coyle. âWeâre talking about a handful of people whoâve acquired it in the U.S.â

The Case Of The Lost Pork Tapeworm

Common in Africa, Asia and Latin America, adult Taenia solium tapeworms can live inside the human intestinal tract, producing eggs that its human host then expels fecally. As an eye-opening feature in [Discover describes, the eggs can get swept up by pigs as the animals forage for food. The larvae hatch in a pigs stomach and make their way into its bloodstream, eventually arriving at its muscles, where it will likely be eaten by a human in, say, a pork taco.

Pork Tapeworm

But sometimes, the cycle gets interrupted. Someone contaminates food with tapeworm eggs bound for a pigs stomach. The tapeworm eggs hatch, but instead of developing into an adult tapeworm in the intestines, they burrow into the bloodstream as would normally occur in a pig. In a human, they often end up in the brain, forming cysts that cause a disease called neurocysticercosis. It can cause seizures, headaches and can lead to death. As if you needed another reason to wash your hands.

Vasodilation Is Probably Part Of A Self

Worms in my brain

Dr. Serrador said:

The brain is one of the relatively important organs in the body, and it needs to be working all the time. Its fairly sensitive to temperature, so vasodilation might be moving warm blood inside tissue to make sure the brain stays warm.

If dilated arteries cause a sudden rush of blood to the brain, which raises pressure and causes pain, a drug that constricts the blood vessel should reduce pressure and eliminate the pain. Also, constricting the blood vessels that supply the brain could help prevent pressure building up dangerously high.

Symptoms Of Tapeworms In Humans

If you ingest food or water contaminated with a tapeworm or its eggs, the parasite can travel to your intestines and cause different symptoms.

A tapeworm infection can go undiagnosed because some people dont have any symptoms of an infection or they only experience mild symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they often include:

  • nausea
  • weight loss
  • weakness

Even though tapeworms can travel to the intestines, they can also migrate to other parts of the body and cause organ or tissue damage. This is known as an invasive infection. You might experience additional symptoms.

Some people with an invasive infection develop:

  • headaches
  • seizures
  • a cyst or lump

If a tapeworm cyst ruptures, you may have symptoms of an allergic reaction like hives and itchiness.

See your doctor if you develop any of the above symptoms. They can conduct tests and make a diagnosis.
