Repairing damage to the brain and spinal cord may be medical science’s most daunting challenge. Until relatively recently, it seemed an impossible task. The new study lays out a “transcriptional roadmap of regeneration in the adult brain.”

“Using the incredible tools of modern neuroscience, molecular genetics, virology and computational power, we were able for the first time to identify how the entire set of genes in an adult brain cell resets itself in order to regenerate. This gives us fundamental insight into how, at a transcriptional level, regeneration happens,” said senior author Mark Tuszynski, MD, PhD, professor of neuroscience and director of the Translational Neuroscience Institute at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Researchers have discovered some unexpected ways that diet affects brain cell regeneration.

Its not just what you eat, but how much you eat and how often you eat that matters as well.

Eating fewer calories and/or eating less often can help grow new brain cells.

Impact Of Exercise On Neurogenesis

They found that aerobic exercise training increased the size of the hippocampus by 2% within just one year.

This reversed the age-related loss in volume by 1 to 2 years and led to improvements in memory.

Usually, the exact opposite happens when we age, where the hippocampus shrinks in late adulthood, which leads to impaired memory and increased risk for dementia.

After the study duration of one year, the aerobic exercise group demonstrated an increase in the volume of the hippocampus by 2%, while the control group displayed a 1.40% decline.

So, the difference in hippocampal volume between the people that exercised and the ones that didnt exercise amounted to 3.4% within just one year, which I think is astounding!

What kind of influence might this have on the chances of keeping our brain healthy if, as adults, we dont just exercise for one year, but for a decade or two decades or ideally our entire lives?I think theres going to be a pretty significant impact.

Also interesting to note is that the control group was not completely inactive.

Chronic Stress And Poor Sleep Habits

When you are experiencing stress, the amygdala, the area in your brain that partakes in emotional processing, signals your hypothalamus. As a response, your hypothalamus increases your heart rate encourages deeper intake of oxygen and heavier breathing, heightens your senses, rushes adrenaline in your body, and increases your cortisol levels. When the stress is over, everything should return to normal. However, when you are under stress, this stress response is never over.

Chronic stress leads to a build-up of cortisol in the body. Among many other functions, cortisol helps your hippocampus, where your memories are stored and processed. Fear learning leads to the classic flight-or-fight response increased heart rate, dry mouth, sweaty palms but the amygdala also plays a role in producing feelings of dread and despair, in the case of phobias or PTSD, for example, says lead researcher;Dr Dhanisha Jhaveri.

You Can Grow New Brain Cells Here’s How

Can adults grow new neurons? Until relatively recently, experts believed the answer was no.

But as neuroscientist Sandrine Thuret explains in a new TED Talk, humans can indeed generate new brain cells, a process called neurogenesis. More importantly, doing so has a range of important benefits, including improving mood, increasing memory formation and preventing the decline associated with aging.

Watch Thuret’s talk for all of the details, but a few key takeaways are below.

Stress, lack of sleep, and aging all reduce the natural rate of neurogenesis. Certain medications also restrict new neuron growth. Thuret notes that some cancer patients unexpectedly develop symptoms of depression even after being told they are cured of their cancer. Unfortunately, the drugs they’ve received not only stop cancer cells from multiplying, but alsostop “new neurons from being generated in their brain,” she says, which has a negative impact on their mood.

Conversely, learning, sex, and aerobic activity all increase neurogenesis.

In one of the first studies to highlight the links between aerobics and neurogenesis, Rusty Gage of the Salk Institute examined new brain cell growth in mice. The ‘control’ mice had no running wheel in their cages, while the ‘runners’ were able to run in their cages regularly. In the snapshots below, from Gage’s experiment, the black dots are new neurons-to-be.
