How To Focus When Studying: 20 Uncommonly Effective Tips

Updated on September 29, 2021 By Daniel Wong

Do you find it hard to focus when youre studying?

There are so many distractions these days: text messages, videos, email and social media.

Not to mention your own wandering mind.

Over the years, Ive taught many thousands of students how to study more effectively.

One of the best ways to improve your grades is to learn how to focus better while you study.

Ive come up with this list of 20 tips and techniques to help you concentrate while studying.

Set Automated Study Reminders

Take the guesswork and decision-making out of studying by programming study notifications into your device or make use of Brainscapes automated study reminders.

Whether you use Brainscape’s reminders or set your own calendar reminders, it’s great to have a way to alert yourself when its time to sit down and resume your studies. It may also be helpful to specify information such as where you left off in the material, the topics you feel you should review before continuing, and how long you wish to study.

This eliminates the time-consuming and mentally exhausting task of having to wade back into your studies every time you pause for a break!

Preparing To Concentrate While Studying

  • 1Find an appropriate study environment. Generally, it is a good idea to eliminate distractions as much as possible while studying, so you can concentrate on what’s in front of you. You want to find a place that is aesthetically pleasing and comfortable for you.
  • Find a quiet area, such as a private room or a library. If you like fresh air, go outside to an area that is reasonably free of distractions, and somewhere you can still connect to Internet, if necessary.
  • Keep in mind that everyone has their own studying environment preferences. While some prefer to study in quiet, others thrive in a bustling environment that mimics white noise.
  • Always believe in yourself.
  • If you don’t know your studying preferences, experiment in different areas, studying in a group or studying solo, studying with or without music, etc. Your ability to concentrate and be productive in different environments will reveal itself rather quickly.
  • 2Gather all of your studying materials. Your studying materials include things like notes, textbooks, study guides, papers, highlighters, or anything else you might need to concentrate and be productive while studying this includes a snack like a granola bar or nuts, and a bottle of water.XResearch source
  • All your materials should be within arm’s reach so you don’t disrupt yourself by going to retrieve your things when you’re in the zone, studying.
  • This includes throwing away food containers, paper garbage, and other miscellaneous items.

How to Improve Concentration and Memory While Studying?

Theres a saying that what gets measured, gets done. This principle applies to study sessions too.

Keep track of how many study sessions you complete each day.

This way, youll become more intentional about getting to work.

Lets say that you typically study in blocks of 30 minutes.

Before you begin your first study session of the day, you might decide that your goal for the day is to do at least 3 sessions of 30 minutes each.

As the day goes by, count how many sessions youve completed.

    Improving Your Study Skills

The key to improving your concentration and memory while studying is to try and eliminate the stressors in your life that are making studying difficult to begin with.

Theres no magic formula to make studying an easier endeavor it will be challenging and difficult, but you can ease the struggle by maintaining good health and promoting a sense of focus.

Four Key Elements Of A Good Brain

  • It teaches you something new. No matter how intellectually demanding the activity, if its something youre already good at, its not a good brain exercise. The activity needs to be something thats unfamiliar and out of your comfort zone. To strengthen the brain, you need to keep learning and developing new skills.
  • Its challenging. The best brain-boosting activities demand your full and close attention. Its not enough that you found the activity challenging at one point. It must still be something that requires mental effort. For example, learning to play a challenging new piece of music counts playing a difficult piece youve already memorized does not.
  • Its a skill you can build on. Look for activities that allow you to start at an easy level and work your way up as your skills improve always pushing the envelope so you continue to stretch your capabilities. When a previously difficult level starts to feel comfortable, that means its time to tackle the next level of performance.
  • Its rewarding. Rewards support the brains learning process. The more interested and engaged you are in the activity, the more likely youll continue doing it and the greater the benefits youll experience. So, choose activities that, while challenging, are still enjoyable and satisfying.

    What’s Fogging Up Focus

Like a computer that slows with use, the brain accumulates wear and tear that affects processing. Dr. Daffner says this can be caused by a number of physiological stressors such as inflammation, injury to blood vessels , the buildup of abnormal proteins, and naturally occurring brain shrinkage.

The following factors can also affect your concentration.

Underlying conditions. Depression or sleep disorders can undermine your ability to concentrate. So can the effects of vision or hearing loss. “You waste precious cognitive resources when you spend too much time trying to make out what’s written on a page or just hear what someone is saying,” Dr. Daffner notes.

Medication side effects. Some drugs, especially anticholinergics , can slow processing speed and your ability to think clearly.

Excessive drinking. Having too much alcohol impairs thinking and causes interrupted sleep, which affects concentration.

Information overload. We are bombarded with information from TVs, computers, and messages such as texts or emails. “When there’s too much material, it burdens our filtering system and it’s easy to get distracted,” Dr. Daffner says.

How Can I Improve My Memory And Focus

    • Pay attention
    • Use as many senses as possible
    • Structure information

Write Down Exactly Why You Want To Study Hard

Another way to stay focused when studying is to be clear about why you want to study hard in the first place.

Write down the reasons you want to study hard.

Keep the list handy so you can remind yourself of these reasons when you find yourself losing concentration.

For example, you might write down:

    • I want to become a more knowledgeable person.
    • I want to become a more self-driven person.
    • I want to cultivate the habit of always doing my best.
    • I want to make the most of my educational opportunities and learn as much as I can.

Try to focus on process-oriented reasons rather than outcome-oriented reasons.

Because outcomes are often beyond your control, whereas the process is always within your control.

For example, the outcome of getting As for all your subjects is, in some ways, beyond your control. But studying for a total of at least 2 hours every day is a process that is within your control.

Heres another reason to focus on the process rather than on the outcome.

The outcome could be something that may only come to pass in the distant future.

On the other hand, the process is something you engage in every day.

Its far more effective to measure the achievement of the process than the achievement of the outcome.

Get Your Brain Ready By Doing Deep Breathing Exercises Before Each Study Session

    Improve Concentration while studying

Deep breathing exercises increase the ability of your mind to focus.

Researchers at Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience have studied the effect of breathing exercises on the bodys production of noradrenaline.

Noradrenaline functions as a neurotransmitter, which affects your concentration.

The researchers concluded that there is a strong connection between breath-centred practices and a steadiness of mind.

Here is a simple breathing exercise that will bring calm and focus to your mind before you study:

    • Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose for 4 seconds.
    • When you feel that your lungs are full of air, hold your breath for 2 seconds.
    • Then slowly exhale through your nose for 4 seconds.

Do this exercise three times in succession before the start of every study session.

Try it out now to see how relaxed it makes you feel!

    Create Connections And Associations

Connecting something you know to a new concept youre trying to learn can help fix that new concept in your memory. Acceleration is like gravity but can be in any direction.

    Make Roadmap For Study

The second step to improve concentration and memory while studying is to make a roadmap of study. Roadmap means designing your study plan according to the syllabus, nature of the exam, questions asked in previous years. Roadmap entail how to start study i.e which subject will you study first? which topics will cover first?

A roadmap helps students to make their study journey easy. If you design your roadmap to study it becomes quite easy for students to retain their concentration and memory while studying for exams. If students have a clear vision of what to study, how to study then it would be an easy task to improve focus and concentration.

    Intrinsic Motivation: Ignite The Self

How to Improve Concentration and Memory While Studying for ...

The reality is that not all of us get to choose exactly what we want to concentrate on. We find it hard to concentrate if we dislike the content. But sometimes, we love what we are studying and we feel a strong desire to learn. This desire may come from pure love, curiosity, fascination, personal relevance, or external rewards like marks, ego-boost, praises, and desirable outcomes like professional independence, good college, better job prospects, respect in society, avoiding shame, etc.

A burning desire emerging from within you is called Intrinsic motivation. That motivation stems from the joy of learning what you love, the love of knowledge, the satisfaction of progressing, etc. Intrinsic motivation depends on your values & wishes. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation stems from external rewards like marks, praise, ego-boost, and outcomes like social respect.

Intrinsic motivation often wins in maintaining increased levels of concentration because your brain is ready to concentrate for its own sake. You increase focus because you want to focus. External rewards can also be powerful but they may change and once your attitude towards values changes, extrinsic motivation crumples. This is called motivational crowding if you are fortunate to be intrinsically motivated to study, seeking external rewards can actually interfere and disrupt your motivation to study.

Tips To Increase The Motivation To Study

    • Find something in your study material that you can relate to. Really try to see how your studies fit your world-view, your past, your partners life, movies you like, etc. You will find something.
    • Find something within the material that will be relevant in the future. Think of active examples where you might need it. If you cant think, google it, learn about applications. Use that to commit to it.
    • Find a way to attach positive emotional weight to your study material. You can do this by talking to an intrinsically motivated friend about the value of learning something. Or even smiling while you work.
    • Make a quick list of the sources of intrinsic motivation, external rewards, and desirable outcomes. Then focus on a few of those which are compatible with each other.

There is no study material which is impossible to fall in love with, its your perspective, attitude, and desire that enables or disables it. The goal of these tips is to create a relationship between you and your study material.
