How To Practice Brain Rest
Brain rest doesnt mean you need to sit in a dark room all day and try not to think about anything. Rather, you avoid activities that require demanding mental processes, such as reaction time, memory, or multitasking.
Here are some brain rest ideas for concussion recovery:
1. Take time off work and/or school.Its difficult to step away from your work responsibilities for a few days, but consider using some sick or vacation time to take a break and allow your brain to heal.
If thats not possible, talk to your employer about a temporary pause or reassignment for your most mentally taxing projects.
For students, ask your teacher and school administrators to work with you to modify your workload. Diving right back into complex problem-solving can exacerbate concussion symptoms.
2. Focus on one task at a time.You may pride yourself on your ability to juggle multiple projects and to-do lists at once. But after a concussion, its helpful to give multitasking a rest and focus your mental energy on one task at a time.
Give yourself a break and know that it will likely take you longer than usual to get things done.
Improving Social Skills And Short
There is so much more I know now about why socialization became difficult for me after my mild traumatic brain injury. I learned that it took several months after my accident for the slow cascade of my brain injury to affect the visual and auditory sensory pathways in my brain. My short-term memory, inability to handle excess stimuli in my environment and difficulty communicating with others were just a few of the sensory deficits that had sent me into an unexpected tailspin of trauma that I never knew my concussion initially caused.
My physical injuries had overshadowed the slow stages of mounting problems from my TBI. My communication skills began to suffer. I became unable to stay on track in conversations with others or retain the information discussed. It was as if everything I heard dropped into a deep well within my brain and unless there was a visual or verbal reminder of the information, it was difficult for me to retrieve much. The shock of what was happening to me caused me to retreat, and I remained isolated for months while I searched intensely for a doctor who could help me. Due to the ongoing physical therapy in addition to trying to navigate through my life with the after effects from my concussion, I had to quit my job. My hands became full trying to recover.
For me, hope after brain injury came from never giving up and reading the stories from other survivors and those medical professionals who helped to improve their lives.

Lynettes Story: Recovering After Being Rear
Lynette was injured in a motor-vehicle accident when another driver rear-ended her car at highway speeds. My year has been one heck of a roller-coaster ride, she shared. She endured a year of pain, memory loss, cognitive difficulties, fatigue, and other symptoms.

But, you can also use other strategies to help you remember. Here are some ideas:
- Reduce stress and stay well rested. Take breaks when you need them.
- Know your limits. When you feel you cant absorb any more information, take a break or have someone else write it down for you.
- Consider using a cell phone or PDA to send yourself reminders, remember directions, or keep appointments.
- Work with a professional to learn to organize information so its easier to remember.
- Carry a calendar or notebook to keep important information in one place.

How Long Does Memory Loss Last After A Concussion
Memory loss after concussion can last far longer than previously thought, according to a growing body of research. One study found that people who had a concussion had memory and thinking test scores about 25% lower than healthy people. One year post injury, their test scores were similar to healthy people, but brain damage was still visible on imaging tests that showed disruption to crucial brain cells.
Its impossible to say how long concussion memory loss will last as every person is different. MRI and CT scans may show brain damage in a particular region, but imaging tests may not show diffuse brain damage. The severity of symptoms does not always correlate to the amount of brain damage, either.
Temporary memory loss after a concussion is common but, fortunately, permanent amnesia is far less frequent. As a general rule, most people have noticeable symptoms of concussion and memory loss within minutes to days of their accident that last up to 7 to 10 days before improving.
When concussion symptoms last longer than this, it may be called post concussion syndrome , a term used to describe concussion symptoms lasting longer than one or two weeks. PCD can last for months, a year, or even longer for some people.
What Does Crt Look Like
Because cognitive deficits, post-concussion symptoms, and other concerns are highly variable and unique to each patient, cognitive rehabilitation therapy may look very different for different people. In order to provide the best care, CRT involves individualized treatment programs that specifically address any cognitive deficits using a network of doctors, therapists, and other specialists. Among the several possible care providers, a patient undergoing CRT may work with any combination of professionals: general practitioners, speech-language pathologists, neuropsychologists, occupational therapists, vocational rehabilitation counselors, neurofeedback practitioners, or psychiatrists. CRT may include many other care providers collaborating to ensure that a concussion patient can return to their pre-injury lifestyle as best as possible.
Below we have listed the roles of some of the specialists in a patients typical CRT treatment. Note that this is not a comprehensive list and that the needs and treatments for different patients will vary greatly.
A general practitioners role in cognitive rehabilitation therapy is first to notice the symptoms or cognitive deficits a patient is experiencing. The general practitioner plays a vital role in providing a patient with proper care because a patient cannot access CRT or almost any of the associated specialists without a referral from a general practitioner.

Why Is This Research Important
This research is important because mTBIs should be taken seriously. Right now there is no blood test or brain scan that can reliably detect an mTBI. mTBIs require medical attention, and mTBI sufferers should follow the medical advice of their doctors. Brain injuries need time to heal and we need to learn more about how to help people recover. Researchers must continue to study what is happening to the brain after an mTBI. For example, our group wants to find out why some people with a history of mTBI do not show impairments in working memory. Maybe this information will help us to find ways to help those patients who do have working memory problems, so that all mTBI survivors can return to a normal working memory capacity.

What Can I Do
Try to figure out if there are other things that are making it harder to think. One way to do this is by asking yourself questions like:
- Did I do too much without taking a break?
- Did I have a bad sleep?
- Do I have a headache or pain?
- Did something stressful happen today?
Keep in mind that it is normal not to remember things from time to time. Getting upset or stressed about it will make it even harder to remember. Take a few minutes to relax and calm down your memory will sometimes come to you.

How To Get The Most Out Of Cognitive Exercises
When you do cardio exercise, there is a cascade of chemicals in your brain that help it perform better. This cascade is called the post-exercise cognitive boost . It doesnt last forever, but combining that boost with cognitive exercises is more effective.
We recommend doing roughly 30 minutes of aerobic exercise before cognitive exercises. Make sure you get your heart rate up! If some of your symptoms are aggravated by exercise, read our guide to exercising safely after a concussion.
Even if exercise is unpleasant, its worth doing safely. Aimees Story: Finding Healing After A Car Accident
Aimee was in a car accident in 2001. Her severe traumatic brain injury caused personality changes, constant headaches , memory problems, exhaustion , dizziness with workouts, light and sound sensitivity, and more. Contrary to what many believe, despite the brains delicacy and vulnerability to damage from concussions and repeated sub-concussive hits, the brain is also capable of healing. The brain may show signs of degeneration over time, but it can also regenerate itself given the right environment.
