Expressive writing helps boost your short-term memory, particularly if you write about a traumatic experience in your life. Masao Yogo and Shuji Fujihara had participants write for 20-minute intervals several times per month. The participants were instructed to write about a traumatic experience, their best possible future selves, or a trivial topic. The researchers found that this simple writing task increased short-term memory capacity after five weeks, but only for the participants who wrote about traumatic experiences. Psychologists cant explain why this writing task works, but it does.

Legend has it that the Greek poet Simonides invented the method of loci, also known as the memory palace.
Simonides was attending a dinner banquet when the building suddenly collapsed. He was the only survivor.
The bodies were crushed beyond recognition. But Simonides was able to identify the bodies by remembering where each person had been sitting.
He later realised that this technique of associating information with places could be used to memorise all kinds of information.
Heres how to use the technique.
Lets say you have a list of 10 grocery items that you want to memorise:

Visualise yourself opening the front door of your house and realising that the doorknob is actually a banana.
Then imagine that as you open the door, a flood of milk comes pouring out of the house.
You walk down the hall into the kitchen and find that the kitchen table is covered in cooking oil.
Then you see a large fish in the kitchen sink.
Next, you look out the window and see broccoli growing in your garden.
And so on.
You can use the method of loci to remember items, points that you want to cover in a presentation, or tasks that you need to complete.
Organize Information Into Bite
For any exams , there are usually lists of things you just need to remember, or arbitrary distinctions, with no way of understanding them.
You can make these lists easier to remember by organizing them into small, meaningful groups, a technique known as chunking. Imagine if your brain is like a cupboard and the contents are scattered, itll be a complete mess and hard to retrieve information you need. In contrast, by chunking information into small, useful units, each unit is a bucketful of information which your brain handles better.
