Another diet-related effect on memory is the mounting research that eating berries can help to stave off memory decline.

A study from the University of Reading and the Peninsula Medical School found that supplementing a normal diet with blueberries for twelve weeks improved performance on spatial working memory tasks. The effects started just three weeks in and continued for the length of the study.

A long-term berry study that tested the memory of female nurses who were over 70 years old found that those who had regularly eaten at least two servings of strawberries or blueberries each week had a moderate reduction in memory decline. .

More research is needed in this area, but science is getting closer to understanding how berries might affect our brains. In particular, blueberries are known for being high in flavanoids, which appear to strengthen existing connections in the brain. That could explain why theyre beneficial for long-term memory.

To learn any language successfully you need to learn a lot of new vocabulary. But all too often, it can feel like all those new words just go in one ear and out the other. So what can you do to ensure you remember more of the new vocabulary you encounter?

When it comes to using a foreign language, how often do you realize that youre out of words to speak on a topic?

For many learners, building a vocabulary is the hardest part of learning a foreign language.

Heres the kicker: No matter how good your grammar skills are, it means nothing until you have a sufficient vocabulary.

Its just impossible to understand other people and express your ideas without knowing words, so having a good vocabulary should be high on your list of priorities.

Its simple the more words you know, the better you can express yourself.

Simple Memory Tips And Tricks

In addition to visual and spatial memory techniques, there are many others tricks you can use to help your brain remember information. Here are some simple tips to try. Check out this video from the Learning Center for a quick explanation of many of these tips.

Try to understand the information first. Information that is organized and makes sense to you is easier to memorize. If you find that you dont understand the material, spend some time on understanding it before trying to memorize it.

Link it. Connect the information you are trying to memorize to something that you already know. Material in isolation is more difficult to remember than material that is connected to other concepts. If you cannot think of a way to connect the information to something you already know, make up a crazy connection. For example, say you are trying to memorize the fact that water at sea level boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, and 212 happens to be the first three digits of your best friends phone number. Link these two by imagining throwing your phone into a boiling ocean. Its a crazy link, but it can help that fact to stick.

Sleep on it. Studies show that your brain processes and stores information while you sleep. Try to review information just before you go to sleepeven if its only for a few minutesand see if it helps embed the information in your memory.

Pay Extra Attention To Difficult Information

Have you ever noticed how it’s sometimes easier to remember information at the beginning or end of a chapter? Researchers have found that the order of information can play a role in recall, which is known as the serial position effect.

While recalling middle information can be difficult, you can overcome this problem by spending extra time rehearsing this information. Another strategy is to try restructuring what you have learned so it will be easier to remember. When you come across an especially difficult concept, devote some extra time to memorizing the information.

Avoid Bright Screens Before Bed

The blue light emitted by cell phone, TV, and computer screens inhibits the production of melatonin, a hormone that controls your sleep-wake cycle . A poorly regulated sleep cycle can really take a toll on sleep quality.

Without enough sleep and rest, the neurons in our brain become overworked. They can no longer coordinate information, making it more difficult to access memories. Roughly an hour before bedtime, turn off your devices and allow your brain to unwind.

Acronyms To Improve Memory For Studying

Acronyms are the most commonly used memory technique and are great for remembering short lists or sequences.

You have probably learned PEMDAS in school a sequence for solving equations. It stands for Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction.

Another common acronym to help you remember a geographical list of names is HOMES, which is used to remember the Great Lakes Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.

Heres a simple tip to create your own acronyms for remembering what you study.

According to the Cambridge dictionary, acronyms are constructed with the first letter of each constituent word and they actually sound like words. Thats what makes them easy to remember.

  • Keyword mnemonics: Improve memory for exams by creating mental associations to the information you are trying to learn using keyword mnemonics. This technique involves choosing a keyword or an image that compels you to think of a word. For example, if you want to remember the French word for star, which is étoile, you could think of a towel in English.;

  • Chunking: Additionally, you could also try chunking. This involves breaking down number phrases of words into manageable pieces of information. For instance, onomatopoeia can become three separate phrases of onom, atop, eia. You could also try creating an acronym or rhyme to remember elements within the periodic table. Chew Gum To Make Stronger Memories

Another easy method to try that could improve your memory is chewing gum while you learn new things. Theres been some contradictory research around this topic, so its not a solid bet, but a study published last year showed that participants who completed a memory recall task were more accurate and had higher reaction times if they chewed gum during the study.

One reason that chewing gum might affect our memory recall is that it increases activity in the hippocampus, an important area of the brain for memory. Its still unclear why this happens, though.

Another theory focuses on the increase of oxygen from chewing gum, which can help with focus and attention. This could mean were creating stronger connections in the brain as we learn new things while chewing gum. One study found that participants who chewed gum during learning and memory tests had higher heart rate levels than control groups, which can also lead to more oxygen flowing to the brain.

The activity needs to be something thats unfamiliar and out of your comfort zone. To strengthen the brain, you need to keep learning and developing new skills.
  • Its challenging. The best brain-boosting activities demand your full and close attention. Its not enough that you found the activity challenging at one point. It must still be something that requires mental effort. For example, learning to play a challenging new piece of music counts; playing a difficult piece youve already memorized does not.
  • Its a skill you can build on. Look for activities that allow you to start at an easy level and work your way up as your skills improve always pushing the envelope so you continue to stretch your capabilities. When a previously difficult level starts to feel comfortable, that means its time to tackle the next level of performance.
  • Its rewarding. Rewards support the brains learning process. The more interested and engaged you are in the activity, the more likely youll continue doing it and the greater the benefits youll experience. So, choose activities that, while challenging, are still enjoyable and satisfying.

    Take Regular Study Breaks

    When your brain is working, you need to take regular study breaks to help your brain absorb more information but also to keep you motivated and focused when you are working. Take a short break after 45-50 minutes study as your focus and concentration will become impaired after this period, anything new after 1 hour 30 minutes does not get assimilated.

    Learning Differences Or Disabilities

    Some children may slide under the radar and be struggling with a learning disability.; Sometimes children with learning disabilities seem distracted or unfocused when the reality is they have a learning difference.;

    Dyslexia is a common learning difference that can affect 1 in 5 children and range from mild to severe.;

    Children with milder dyslexia may be able to read on grade level when tested but struggle with it.;

    Reading can make them more and more tired throughout the day as they use more energy than their peers to get through the same material. By lunchtime, they are exhausted and seem to be zoning out and not paying attention.;

    You can request the school test your child for dyslexia or other learning disabilities that may be affecting your childs ability to focus at school.;

    Once your child is properly diagnosed and accommodated you may see their focusing issues dissipate.;
