How to Read an MRI of the Brain | First Look MRI

The mnemonic used by Dr. Andrew Perron who lectures on this topic frequently is: “Blood Can Be Very Bad”. Content and images below are taken from his lecture .

This stands for

Look for any evidence of bleeding throughout all slices of the head CT.

Blood will appear bright white and is typically in the range of 50-100 Houndsfield units.

Basic categories of blood in the brain are epidural, subdural, intraparenchymal/intracerebral, intraventricular, and subarachnoid.

What Does The Equipment Look Like

The traditional MRI unit is a large cylinder-shaped tube surrounded by a circular magnet. You will lie on a table that slides into the center of the magnet.

Some MRI units, called short-bore systems, are designed so that the magnet does not completely surround you. Some newer MRI machines have a larger diameter bore, which can be more comfortable for larger patients or those with claustrophobia. “Open” MRI units are open on the sides. They are especially helpful for examining larger patients or those with claustrophobia. Open MRI units can provide high quality images for many types of exams. Certain exams cannot be performed using open MRI. For more information, consult your radiologist.

How Does An Mri Work

An MRI scan works by using a powerful magnet, radio waves, and a computer to create detailed images. Your body is made up of millions of hydrogen atoms , which are magnetic. When your body is placed in the magnetic field, these atoms align with the field, much like a compass points to the North Pole. A radio wave knocks down the atoms and disrupts their polarity. The sensor detects the time it takes for the atoms to return to their original alignment. In essence, MRI measures the water content of different tissues, which is processed by the computer to create a black and white image. The image is highly detailed and can show even the smallest abnormality.

Similar to CT, MRI allows your doctor to see your body in narrow slices, each about one quarter of an inch thick. For example, imagine that you are slicing a loaf of bread and taking a picture of each slice. It can view slices from the bottom , front , or sides , depending on what your doctor needs to see.

A dye may be injected into your bloodstream to enhance certain tissues. The dye contains gadolinium, which has magnetic properties. It circulates through the blood stream and is absorbed in certain tissues, which then stand out on the scan.

What Does A Brain Mri Show

What does a brain MRI show? The answer is, unfortunately, not very. MRI scans have been around for decades, and the technology has been steadily improving. Today, a brain MRI test can identify whether or not a person has a stroke, or if the person has suffered a traumatic brain injury, or if the person is suffering from some type of brain malfunction. MRI scans have even been used to screen people for depression! For those of us in the medical field, brain MRI scans are often used in conjunction with other diagnostic techniques, such as electroencephalographs , magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography scans to determine brain activity in patients who show certain signs or symptoms of disease or other disorders.

If a doctor suspects that a patient is exhibiting certain mental symptoms, one way that he or she can go about choosing which brain MRI test to use is by looking for certain things in the images. Patients with milder psychiatric problems, such as depression or social anxiety, may be able to benefit from MRI brain scans that provide information on how their brains process visual information. Doctors may choose to look for signs of abnormalities in the brain scans themselves, or they may choose to look for information on how that particular brain area processes the information. Either way, though, an effective test like this will give important information.

What Are The Reasons For An Mri Of The Brain Or Spine

MRI may be used to examine the brain and/or spinal cord for injuries or thepresence of structural abnormalities or certain other conditions, such as:

  • Tumors

  • Venous malformations

  • Hemorrhage, or bleeding into the brain or spinal cord

  • Subdural hematoma

  • Degenerative diseases, multiple sclerosis , hypoxic encephalopathy , or encephalomyelitis

  • Hydrocephalus , or fluid in the brain

  • Herniation or degeneration of discs of the spinal cord

  • Help plan surgeries on the spine, such as decompression of a pinched nerve or spinal fusion

MRI can also help to identify the specific location of a functional centerof the brain to assist in treatment of a condition of the brain.

There may be other reasons for your doctor to recommend MRI of the spine orbrain.

What Happens After A Head Mri

After the MRI, your technologist may ask you to wait to determine if they need to take more images. Unless your doctor says otherwise, you can go about your day and eat normally. There is no special care required after an MRI.

As you continue with your routine, a radiologist, which is a doctor with training to interpret MRI scans, will examine your MRI brain scan results and communicate with your doctor. You may wish to ask the staff how long it will take to hear back from your doctor about the results to help ease your mind.

If you notice any redness, swelling or pain from the IV site, let your doctor know, as this could be a sign of a reaction or infection. You may also feel some discomfort from having to lay still during the procedure, especially if you recently had surgery or an injury. Discuss this with the technologist ahead of time, and they will do all they can to reduce discomfort.

What Does An Mri Of The Brain Show

By looking at MRI images, your doctor can see details of blood flow and fluids surrounding the brain, which can help determine abnormalities in the brain relating to arteries and veins.

An MRI brain scan also shows brain lesions. A brain lesion appears as a dark or light spot that does not look like normal brain tissues. Brain lesions may be present due to multiple sclerosis or as a result of an infection or a tumor.

In general, a brain MRI will enable your doctor to examine blood flow and tissue health in the following brain structures.

  • Cerebrum: The cerebrum is the front part of the brain that involves movement, body temperature, touch, vision, hearing, reasoning, emotions and learning.
  • Brainstem: The brainstem is the middle of the brain. This region involves eye and mouth movement, sensory messages, hunger, consciousness, cardiac function and involuntary muscle movements.
  • Cerebellum: The cerebellum is the back of the brain which coordinates voluntary muscle movements and helps you maintain posture and balance.

How To Prepare For A Head Mri

You should not have to do too much to prepare for a head MRI. You may be able to eat, drink and take your medications as usual. However, if your doctor ordered a scan for other parts of your body, such as your abdominal region, they may instruct you not to drink or eat four to six hours before the test.

Because an MRI machine is essentially a magnet, it can interact with metals, thus creating a blurry image. Thats why it helps to leave metal items at home before your appointment, or remove them before you enter the scanning room. You can prepare for your scan ahead of time by removing the following items from your body and pockets:

  • Body piercings
  • Zippers or any metal clothing fasteners
  • Removable dental work

Its also best to avoid wearing makeup, nail polish, hair products, sunscreen and antiperspirants, as these items could contain metal particles. If you wear glasses, you will need to remove them when its time for the scan.

Before you schedule your appointment for a brain MRI, make sure to inform the medical staff if you have any of the following conditions.

Some items can pose a risk during an MRI. Make sure your doctor and medical staff know about any of the following items before you get your MRI:

  • Brain aneurysm clips, metal plates or any metal implants
  • Artificial heart valve
  • Metal fragments in the body
  • Any type of implantable pump
  • Bullet wound
