âThrough neuroplasticity, our brain can change it can change in direct response to the way we live our life,â Rebecca says.
Neuroplasticity refers to the brains capacity to change, such as changes to the brainâs wiring, changes to the size of different brain regions, changes in how brain networks function, or the birth of new neurons. Critically, many of these changes can happen in response to our experiences or regular activities.
For example, a series of seminal research studies on what happens to the brains of people who learn to juggle found positive changes occurred in the size and connections of the brain involved in the activity.
âThat was a revelation because before then, it was thought that the adult brain couldnât change, that you couldnât teach an old dog new tricks,â Rebecca says. âTurns out you can.â
One of the studies, by scientists at the University of Oxford, scanned the brains of 24 people before and after they learnt to juggle, practising for half an hour every day for six weeks. All the learner jugglers grew more white matter in their parietal lobe, no matter how well they mastered the art of juggling. It was the act of practising juggling that improved the area of the brain that is responsible for connecting how we see with how we move.

Scientists said it’s simply not fair to say 90 percent of your brain doesn’t matter, because all parts of the brain work. There’s no filler.
The 10 Percent Of The Brain Myth As It Is Called Has A Long History
And Lucy Director Luc Besson freely proclaims that his film is a fantasy based on little if any science.
The film certainly makes its own case that expanding activity beyond natural levels, let alone experiencing a 100 percent brain, comes with serious downsides, including what it portrays as increasingly ruthless behavior on the part of Johanssons character. As we will see, there are good neuroscientific reasons to stick with our natural allotment of activityand possibly to aim for less.
Yet many serious writers have used the film as a foil in order to debunk the 10 percent myth. They explain that, no, in fact, we use almost all of the brain, and we do so all the time. An eminent neurologist from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine was quoted in Scientific American as saying:

The idea that we only use 10 percent of our brains is a pernicious myth. The brain is always active. It makes a bit more sense to say that we use 100 percent of the brain all the time, but even this is misleading. Both the 10 percent or 100 percent estimates are not even wrong.

Recently, I saw the movie Lucy starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman. If youre planning on watching it and dont want me to spoil it for you, then skip the next paragraph.
The general story is that a college student studying abroad gets abducted by a gang in Taipei and is forced to carry a bag of drugs that they implant in her abdomen. When the bag starts leaking its contents, CPH4 , the drug triggers rampant production of new connections between neurons giving Lucy access to the 90 percent of her brain that supposedly most of us never use.
The explosive brain growth makes her superhuman, and levitation, time travel, mind reading, learning Chinese in an instant, mentally controlling electronics, altering and generating new body parts, as well as high-speed car chases, and fight-to-the-death scenes follow.
Lucy is based on a lie
The director, Luc Besson, knew the idea that we only use 10% of our brainpower was wrong but went with it anyway. Hey, it IS science fiction. I get it, but the problem is that too many people accept this brain myth as a fact. According to a TED-Ed Animation, two-thirds of the public and nearly half of all science teachers still mistakenly believe this nonsense.
