Potential Health Benefits Of Butter

In moderation, butter can be a healthy part of your diet. Its rich in nutrients like bone-building calcium and contains compounds linked to lower chances of obesity. Butter can also be part of a low-carbohydrate diet, which may help people better maintain their weight or lose weight quicker than they would with a low-fat diet.

Butter has other health benefits:

It can help lower your chances of cancer. Butter is high in beta-carotene, a compound that your body converts into vitamin A. Beta-carotene has been linked to lowered risks of lung cancer and prostate cancer.

It could help your eyes. The beta-carotene in butter may help slow the rate of vision loss, or age-related macular degeneration .

It can help strengthen your bones. Butter contains vitamin D, a nutrient that is vital for bone growth and development. It also has calcium, which is essential for bone strength. Calcium also helps prevent diseases such as osteoporosis, a condition that makes bones weak and fragile.

It can help make your skin healthier. Butter also contains vitamin E, which plays a role in skin health. The nutrient reduces damage from UV sun rays, reduces skin inflammation, and improves how well skin wounds heal.

Is Butter Healthy For Babies

Yes. Butter has a good amount of vitamin A for vision, skin, and immunity and traces of vitamin E to power a babys growth and development. Butter is also packed with saturated fat the most abundant type of fat in breast milk. In recent years, saturated fat has been scrutinized for its association with heart disease in adults, but research shows that it has its place as a part of a balanced diet, and that it may have a more neutral impact on the heart than previously thought.12

Wondering if you need to buy organic butter for baby? Instead of worrying about organic versus non-organic dairy, use butter that is available to you and try diversifying the fat in a babys diet by occasionally swapping butter for oil, such as avocado oil, coconut oil, olive oil, peanut oil, or sesame oil, which are all high in healthy fats. Rest assured that butter made from either organic or non-organic cows milk delivers plenty of nutrients to nourish a growing a baby. What is most important is balance: serving an array of fruits, vegetables, and other whole foods with healthy fats and proteins is best for growing babies and toddlers.

Tip: When shopping, look for butter with few ingredients on the label ideally, just cream and, in some cases, cultures on the ingredient list. Avoid butter or butter-like products that contain trans fats.

What Is The Best Type Of Butter

Not all butter is the same. If youre buying butter from conventionally-raised cows, you might be better off avoiding it, as most cows found on factory farms are fed an unnatural grain-based diet of corn and soy rather than the grass they are designed to graze on. This not only negatively affects the life of the poor cow, which may also be injected with synthetic growth hormones and antibiotics, but it also adversely impacts the nutrition found in the milk.

When comparing conventional butter to butter from grass-fed, pasture-raised cows, we find higher levels of omega-6 fats and lower levels of omega-3 fats and CLA in the conventional dairy. In addition, organic, grass-fed butter offers several more health benefits, including more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants .19

Another great choice is grass-fed ghee. Ghee, whats that? Also known as clarified butter, ghee has had the casein removed and is preferred for cooking as it has a higher smoking point.

Review of Beauty Butter and Brain Butter From Pearl Butter

Despite the use of butter worldwide, some are still blaming this dairy product to be one of the causes of obesity and heart disease. Recent studies, however, revealed that butter is good for the health as long as it is eaten in moderate amounts.

1. Rich in fat-soluble vitamins

Butter contains numerous amounts of fat-soluble vitamins, including A, E, and K2. These bioavailable nutrients are essential to the different body systems including the immune, mental, and hormonal health. Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant that also plays a critical role in better eyesight, improved skin condition, and neurological function. Vitamin E also contains antioxidant properties that are mainly used for hair and skin care.

Vitamin K2 may rarely be known to some people. However, this vitamin offers numerous powerful effects on the body. It is responsible for calcium metabolism that is linked with diseases including osteoporosis, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. The best source of this essential vitamin comes from the grass-fed cows.

2. Contains high amounts of saturated fats

Butter contains ample amounts of short and medium chain fats. These are essential for metabolizing other kinds of fats in the body. They are also responsible for improving satiety, increasing the rate of metabolism, and supporting healthier immune system.

3. Lowers the risks of heart attacks

4. Good source of fatty acid butyrate

5. High amounts of conjugated linoleic acid

6. Associated with lower risk of obesity

Brain Food: Colorful Veggies

Vegetables with rich, deep color are an excellent source of antioxidants to keep the brain cells healthy. Some veggies to include in your child’s diet are tomatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, or spinach. It’s easy to sneak veggies into spaghetti sauces or soups.

Replace potato or corn chips in your child’s lunch with baked sweet potato wedges or easy-to-snack-on veggies such as sugar snap peas or baby carrots.

What Is A Brain Food

Brain foods are those that are rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. They provide your brain with energy and aid in protecting brain cells, which helps ward off development of brain diseases.

How exactly do healthy foods for brain function aid in mental health? Once way is by supporting gut function and a healthy inflammation response.

A number of important hormones and neurotransmitters are created in the gut and are then able to enter the brain, which influences cognitive abilities, such as understanding and processing new information, plus memory and concentration. This means that a well-functioning gut is essential for sending the brain the kind of chemical signals that keep help us functioning at our best.

A poor-quality diet can cause our bodies to release more inflammatory cytokines, which studies show can contribute to inflammation that can wind up damaging the brain.

While inflammation helps protect us against illnesses and repairs the body when you do something like cut yourself, chronic inflammation is a different animal. Its been linked to a number of mental/cognitive conditions, including dementia, cognitive impairment and Alzheimers disease.

Are Saturated Fats Good For Your Brain?

Most of what we eat should flood our brains with healthy fats, phytonutrients , gut-healthy fiber and anti-inflammatory substances. In the MIND diet study, those who ate primarily from 10 brain-healthy food groups and largely avoided the five brain unhealthy ones had 53% less incidence of Alzheimers at the end of the 4.5-year study. Those who followed these guidelines half the time still had a significant reduction in risk35%!

The Butter And Cholesterol Connection

A cornerstone of conventional nutrition wisdom has been the recommendation to replace saturated fats with oils rich in omega-6 polyunsaturated fats . A prime example is the long-standing advice to swap butter for margarine. As reported in the British Medical Journal, evidence from a 50-year-old trial from Minnesota indicates that that advice may be flat-out wrong in fact, the study found that substituting linoleic acid for saturated fats increased the rates of death from all causes, coronary heart disease, and cardiovascular lower cholesterol levels notwithstanding.1 In fact, another surprise was that decreased serum cholesterol levels led to higher risks of death, rather than lower.

Another study, published in the Lancet, looked at changes in cholesterol levels over 20 years and all-cause mortality among a group of 3,572 men aged 71 93. Contrary to what weve been led to believe, lower cholesterol levels were again found to actually increase the risk of death.2 And a growing number of studies are finding similar results namely, lowering our saturated fat consumption and cholesterol doesnt decrease deaths or heart attacks. For example, a meta-analysis found no significant evidence that saturated fats from our diets increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.9

Now that the big, bad cholesterol skeleton is out of the closet, does butter have any benefits? Or, is butter bad for you? Im glad you asked.

Dark Chocolate Supports Good Gut Bacteria

One of the most unusual health benefits of dark chocolate is that it increases beneficial bacteria in your intestines.

And oddly, this is good news for your brain!

Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria are two of the most prevalent strains of good bacteria in your gut and are found in most probiotic supplements.

An overabundance of bad bacteria can lower levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor .

This important brain chemical is essential for keeping existing brain cells healthy and stimulating the formation of new brain cells.

  • To an extent, yes

Butter is known to have saturated fats in it, which is the most likely ingredient which could make it good for your mind.

Peanut Butter Is Good For Your Brain

Peanut butter test for Alzheimerâs disease

Great news for all you peanut butter lovers including me. It turns out that peanuts and peanut butter might be good for your brain. In a study published in the Clinical Nutrition Journal, researchers at the University of Barcelona studied healthy adults aged 18 to 33 and tested their memory function and other aspects of mental health. They put participants into one of three groups for six months a group who ate skin roasted peanuts, one that had peanut butter, and a group that ate a control butter. After 6 months, they found that overall, peanuts and peanut butter had a positive effect on the cognitive health of the participants. Both the groups who ate peanuts and peanut butter had improvements in immediate memory recall, but only the peanut butter consumers had improvements in their overall memory function. The researchers concluded that the polyphenols found in peanuts and peanut butter were the major reason for the cognitive boosts.

Butter And Your Brain

The tide is finally turning when it comes to the health benefits of saturated fats. Although there are still some naysayers out there who would tell you ALL fat is bad, regardless of whether saturated or not, dont believe them. The science on this subject is rock solid and the benefits of including more saturated fat in the diet are extensive. So, lets do a quick review of why saturated fat is so important.

Every cell in your body has a protective outer layer called the cell wall or cell membrane. This cell wall contains both fat and water. The type of fat found on the cell wall is, not surprisingly, saturated fat. Both the fat and water are arranged in such a way to allow both water-soluble and fat-soluble nutrients to gain access to the interior of the cell through certain parts of the cell membrane. So, as you might imagine, if you are chronically dehydrated, your cells may not be able to receive the water-soluble nutrients obtained from your diet. And if you dont have enough fat in your diet , the fat-soluble nutrients wont have any way to access your cells either.

Every cell membrane requires saturated fat and even more importantly, your brain is made of 60% fat. That makes it even more important to ensure you are getting enough fat in your diet to have healthy cells and a sharp mind. In fact, there has been significant research into the benefits of including saturated fat and reduction of Alzheimers Disease, Dementia and age-related cognitive decline.

What Butter Is Best

When youre looking to buy the best butter you can, remember than butter is always better than vegetable oil, and some butter is better than no butter.

In my opinion, grass-fed butter is the best.

Any leftover money in my grocery budget gets invested in grass-fed butter. If youre not ready to double your investment into butter, here are some baby steps to help you out.

  • If grass-fed butter is not in the budget, aim to buy one pound each month and use that butter strictly during raw consumption . Continue to use conventional butter for all your other butter needs.
  • If you find extra wiggle room after youve upgraded one pound of butter each month to grass-fed, buy enough grass-fed butter to cover your familys needs for raw consumption for the entire month.
  • Once your family is eating grass-fed butter for all raw consumption needs on a regular basis, switch your conventional butter to organic butter. Start with one pound the first month, slowly integrating the change into your budget over time.
  • The next step would be to exclusively buy grass-fed butter. Depending on how much grass-fed butter costs in your area, and how much your family consumes, this may take several months to accomplish. Consider this a long-term goal, stocking on what you can, when you can.
  • For those who enjoy a good challenge, try to locate a local farmer who sells cream from pastured cows. Make your own raw butter from this cream and use this for raw consumption.

    Foods High In Trans Fats

Trans fats are a type of unsaturated fat that can have a detrimental effect on brain health.

While trans fats occur naturally in animal products like meat and dairy, these are not a major concern. Its industrially produced trans fats, also known as hydrogenated vegetable oils, that are a problem.

These artificial trans fats can be found in shortening, margarine, frosting, snack foods, ready-made cakes and prepackaged cookies.

Studies have found that when people consume higher amounts of trans fats, they tend to have an increased risk of Alzheimers disease, poorer memory, lower brain volume and cognitive decline 00355-8/fulltext” rel=”nofollow”> 14,

    21 ).

The evidence on saturated fat is mixed. Three observational studies have found a positive association between saturated fat intake and the risk of Alzheimers disease, whereas a fourth study showed the opposite effect 00355-8/fulltext” rel=”nofollow”> 14).

One cause for this may be that a subset of the test populations had a genetic susceptibility to the disease, which is caused by a gene known as ApoE4. However, more research is required on this topic 00355-8/fulltext” rel=”nofollow”> 14).

One study of 38 women found that those who consumed more saturated fat relative to unsaturated fat performed worse on memory and recognition measures .

Thus, it may be that the relative ratios of fat in the diet are an important factor, not just the type of fat itself.
