The near death experience is a type of experience syndrome, whereby people perceive themselves to be near death or in danger of dying. Comparison With Perceptual Stimulation

We recently showed that FW travelling waves increase during visual stimulation, whereas BW waves decrease, in-line with their putative functional role in information transmission . In Figure 2B, for the sake of comparison, we contrast the cortical dynamics induced by DMT with the results of our previous study , in which participants perceived a visual stimulus or stared at a dark screen . Remarkably, mutatis mutandis, both FW and BW waves share a similar profile across the two conditions, increasing and decreasing respectively following DMT injection or visual stimulation. If we consider the absolute power values derived from the 2D-FFT of each map as an estimate of spectral power, we can read the results reported in Figure 2C as an overall decrease in oscillatory power following DMT injection, more specifically in the frequency band with the highest power values . Such decrease in oscillatory power is also matched by a similar decrease induced by visual stimulation . These results demonstrate that, despite participants having their eyes-closed throughout, DMT produces spatio-temporal dynamics similar to those elicited by true visual stimulation. These results therefore shed light on the neural mechanisms involved in DMT-induced visionary phenomena.

Rick Strassman tried to use it as a way of explaining the near death experience. He suggested that what happens when you have a near death experience is that your brain releases its store of DMT into the brain and its this chemical release that gives the experience.

No one has done a particularly thorough job of mapping the classic near death experience to the classic DMT experience. People have attempted crude compassions but no one has looked at it closely. When you do there are some overlaps but there are a lot of differences.

Although the DMT experience broadly contains all the elements of a near death experience, near death experiences are not like DMT ones. You have the experience of being out of the body or a tunnel of light, like you have with DMT, but there are things we find in the DMT experience that we dont find in the near death one, such as geometric patterns and alien and bizarre experiences, whereas near death ones are typically very earthly.

Whats more Interesting is if you look at the folklore in literature around 100 years ago. People documented verbal accounts of people who had experiences with pixies. Typically in the folklore literature there were most often associated with spirits of the dead, which has some alliances with the idea of DMT being related to near death experiences. How and why that is, thats anyones guess really.

Scientifically its somewhat tricky. Ive been researching in this area for about 10 or 15 years. DMT struck me as being extremely curious because theres no other psychedelic we know of that naturally occurs in the human body. I mean the human neural system has endocannabinoids which are related to cannabis THC, but theres a big difference between that and the presence of DMT.

Whats the role of DMT in the body and why do people have such extraordinary intense and bizarre experiences when they take it? Strassmans theory is that the purpose of DMT is to help people transition from a living state to a post-death state, whatever that might be. Thats a quite ambitious speculation from a scientific perspective. Because you cant really know what happens after death.

New Insights Into How A Mammalian Brain Naturally Produces Psychedelic Dmt

A compelling new study has revealed how a mammalian brain can produce an incredibly powerful hallucinogen called DMT. The research shows the psychedelic is endogenously produced in a number of brain regions, including the visual cortex, and spikes in concentrations following an induced cardiac arrest.

For several decades the hypothesis that dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, was produced endogenously in the human body presented one of the most compelling mysteries in the field of psychedelic science. The presence of this extraordinarily powerful hallucinogenic molecule has been tracked in tiny amounts in a variety of bodily fluids, but where DMT is produced in a body, and why it’s produced, are still unanswered questions.

Perhaps the most well-known researcher in the DMT field is a scientist named Rick Strassman. In the early 1990s he conducted a number of iconic experiments, administering DMT to human patients and chronicling the results in an influential book entitled DMT: The Spirit Molecule.

“I said to myself, ‘wait, I’ve worked on the pineal gland for years and have never heard of this,'” says Borjigin. “I thought if DMT is an endogenous monoamine, it should be very easy to detect using a fluorescence detector.”

The study of course raised a whole host more questions than it answered. How was the rat brain synthesizing DMT? Was this process localized to just the pineal gland? What function does this endogenous DMT production serve?

Immune System And Neurotoxicity

Ayahuasca has been reported to decrease the percentage of CD3 and CD4 lymphocytes, but to increase the number of natural killer cells . It has been hypothesized that DMT might increase activity of the immune system and could prove useful as a treatment for cancer. Evidence for this hypothesis is equivocal. DMT increased the cytotoxic activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in the A172 human glioma cell line . However, in another study, DMT did not exhibit cytotoxicity of KB or HepG2 carcinoma cells . In addition, others have proposed that DMT and related compounds are anti-inflammatory and reported that DMT inhibited production of pro-inflammatory compounds IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and TNFα and increased levels of the anti-inflammatory compound IL-10 through actions at the sigma-1 receptor .

Down regulation of the expression for the gene responsible for INMT production has been associated with cancer . It is believe to be a potential candidate gene in prevention of cancer progression. Inmt expression has been associated with a dramatic decrease in recurrence of malignant prostate and lung cancers . It is possible that the regulating roles of Inmt via its product DMT could potentially have a direct tumor suppression effect, but this is role of DMT is unlikely, and highly speculative.

Many studies have been conducted to detect and/or quantitate DMT in blood and urine and only a few in the CSF of humans . However, the CSF studies made no effort to quantitate the DMT detected . In fact, there have been no efforts to quantify the actual levels of endogenous DMT and its metabolites in human brain and only a few have attempted to address the issue in rats. Barker et al. described the presence of DMT in pineal gland perfusates from free-moving rats but no quantitation was conducted since the perfusates were essentially dilutions of the surrounding tissue effluent and were collected at a single point-in-time. As noted, no circadian studies of DMT production or release from the pineal as a function of time have ever been conducted. In Kärkkäinen et al. , using multiple extraction and clean-up steps and an LC/MS method for analysis, reported the level of DMT in whole rat brain taken from animals pretreated with a MAOI as being 10 and 15 ng/kg. This study’s information is unfortunately quite limited in terms of sample number and did not address extraction recoveries, method validation or brain distribution of DMT.

Given these facts, any speculation that attempts to dismiss the relevance of DMT in vivo because the concentrations in brain are too low necessarily ignores the fact that data concerning the actual levels of DMT in brain, particularly humans and levels that may be observed in different brain areas, simply does not exist.

Most hallucinogens such as lysergic acid diethylamide and 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine cause sensory distortion, depersonalization at high doses, and at least one causes auditory distortions, whereas some compounds such as DMT , psilocybin or mescaline cause episodic visual effects. In the late 1990s, Rick Strassman conducted the first human research with hallucinogens in 20 years, examining the physiological effects and self-reports from people receiving DMT in carefully controlled settings . How To Tap Into Your Own Dmt Naturally

OK, Ill admit, being able to tap into your own DMT is not a novel concept by any means, and Im certainly not taking credit for it.

Bioavailability Of Exogenous Dmt

Why Does the Brain Make Its Own DMT?

DMT is not orally active. This is likely due to rapid degradation by peripheral monoamine oxidase , the enzyme responsible for catalyzing the oxidative deamination of endogenous biogenic amines . For hallucinogenic or psychedelic phenomena to occur, plasma concentration must be between 12 â 90 μg/L with an apparent volume of distribution of 36 â 55 L/kg , which roughly corresponds to a plasma concentration of 0.06 â 0.50 μM. In order for DMT to be bioavailable, oral formulations such as ayahuasca contain Banisteriopsis caapi and other beta-carboline harmala alkaloids that act as MAOIs . MAO-A inhibitors such as iproniazid prolongs the half-life of DMT in rat brain , and can extend the time course effects of DMT in drug discrimination from 30 min to 60 min . Exogenous DMT formulations containing a reversible MAOI can result in blood levels up to 1.0 mg/ml or higher . On average a 100 mL dose of ayahuasca contains about 24 mg of DMT . Interestingly, DMT is itself a short-acting monoamine oxidase inhibitor at high doses , and is selective for MAO-A . In these studies, DMT decreased serotonin and dopamine deamination in rat striatum concomitantly with rapid onset . Normalization occurred 2 hours later with an ED50 of 25 mg/kg for degradation of both serotonin and dopamine.

Do We Have Dmt In Our Brains

Most people in the psychedelic community seem to take it for granted that DMT is made in the brain probably thanks to the popularization of Rick Strassmans theories in the movie The Spirit Molecule.

However, the research isnt so clear-cut.

We know that rodents make DMT in their brains, in large quantities. But theres no proof yet that its the same in humans.

Studies have shown that humans have the two enzymes that are needed to make DMT in the brain, but DMT itself has not yet been proven to be present. Some researchers have shown that DMT can be found in the cerebrospinal fluid, a protective covering for the brain but the amount was never quantified. Even if DMT was present in cerebrospinal fluid in large quantities, that wouldnt necessarily mean that the brain was producing it, or that the DMT was capable of entering into the brain.

So although it looks likely that our brains can make DMT, we dont yet know for sure and we dont know if they can make DMT in large enough quantities to make us trip.

Future Study Of Dmt As A Therapeutic

At present, the data arguing for the use of DMT as a therapeutic, particularly via administration, is thin. The claimed therapeutic effects for DMT in combination with harmala MAOIs as in ayahuasca or pharmahuasca is of interest but presents a complex data set that prevents an understanding of the contribution of each component. To further study DMT without the effects of an MAOI, research should pursue whether or not D4DMT is orally active, as previously noted, which would enhance the opportunities to examine its potential as a therapeutic. The use of hallucinogens in psychotherapy is gaining renewed interest and certainly DMT should be among the drugs in the psychiatric pharmacopeia. Any proposal to pursue this avenue will require more than the current combined body of scientific evidence. Both Federal and State laws will have to change in order to make the manufacture and use of such compounds easier and to make conducting the necessary research feasible.

The History Of Dmt: The Origin Of The Spirit Molecule

Like many psychedelics, DMT has a fascinating history that goes back thousands of years, far before the flower-child, hippie-loving 1960s.

The First Wave

South American indigenous cultures have used DMT during shamanic or spiritual rituals since the 8th century, typically ingested in combination with other plants or herbs, and prepared as a psychoactive snuff or as a tea . These ceremonies were always led by a Shamanusually a respected elder of the tribe, doctor, or priestwhich combined the plant medicine with drumming or chanting to induce a dreamlike state, helping the user communicate with the spirit world.

While the use of plants that naturally contained DMT goes back centuries, the understanding of the isolated DMT compoundat least in terms of a scientific perspectiveis much more recent.

The Second Wave

Less than 100 years ago, in 1931, isolated DMT was first synthesized by Canadian chemist Richard Manske. The compound was then discovered in plants by microbiologist Oswaldo Gonçalves de Lima in 1946.

But it wasnt until 1956 that Hungarian chemist Stephen Szára uncovered DMTs hidden hallucinogenic and psychedelic effects . This is when DMT hit the scenenot only as a counter-culture party drug and consciousness exploration toolbut also as a subject of massive interest in the scientific community, especially for researchers in the field of mental illness.
