The worlds most popular online video game costs nothing to play, is available on seven different platforms, has more than 200 million registered players worldwide, and its CEO is now worth over $7 billion. Launched in the summer of 2017, Fortnite has blown away the competition to become the go-to video game for any serious or would-be gamer. Fortnite may also be responsible for a serious decline in your childs health as evidence mounts about the effects on kids obsessed with playing.

While the World Health Organization recognizes gaming disorder as a diagnosable condition, the American Psychiatric Association says there is currently insufficient evidence to support gaming disorder as a unique mental disorder, calling for further research.

To gain valuable insight on the potential harm that obsessive video gaming can cause in young people, I spoke with Dr. Anita Gadhia-Smith, a psychotherapist in Washington, D.C. who specializes in addictions, recovery and relationship issues.

Doctors Compare Effects Of Video Game Fortnite To Hard Drugs

ealth professionals have warned against the impact of video game Fortnite, likening its effects to those of hard drugs.

The online shooter-survival game, played by more than 250 million users, is causing children to become violent, distracted and sleep-deprived, according to behavioural specialists in the US.

Michael Rich, a director of the Clinic for Interactive Media and Internet Disorders at Boston Children’s Hospital, told the Boston Globe: They are not sleeping. They are not going to school.

“They are dropping out of social activities. A lot of kids have stopped playing sports so they can do this.

We have one kid who destroyed the family car because he thought his parents had locked his device inside. He took a hammer to the windshield, said Mr Rich.

Does Fortnite Damage Your Brain

DoesFortnitedamageyourbrain? Fortnite and other addictive video games can affect childrens brains in the same way as alcoholism or drug abuse, scientists have found. The researchers have discovered that the reward system of young heavy players have the same changes in structure and function as those hooked on substances.

Video gaming affects the brain structure and function depending on how the game is played. The game genres examined were 3D adventure, first-person shooting , puzzle, rhythm dance, and strategy. The total training durations were 1690 h. Results of this systematic review demonstrated that video gaming can be beneficial to the brain.

Most people’s minds go to the heavily popular game of Fortnite, but there are many other games in this category, even games that are precisely like Fortnite but were released before it, such as H1Z1 and PUBG. But how do these types of games affect yourbrain?

A scan of 12-year-old Amado’s brain shows in red and orange blooms the blood flow and stimulation between “Fortnite” and images of birds , images of birds and a non-“Fortnite” game , and between “Fortnite” and the non-“Fortnite” game . Does Minecraft Make You Smarter

As far as non-violent, educational games go, Minecraft is arguably one of the best. It can teach kids the fundamentals of programming skills, teamwork, problem-solving, project management, and offers a fantastic environment to foster creativity and out of the box thinking.

Because of this, there have been various studies and opinion pieces that point towards the idea that Minecraft can make you smarter.

For example, a study in 2017 conducted at Glasgow University linked playing video games and Minecraft to future university success. Their research found that people who played the game were able to show increased communication, adaptability and resourcefulness scales, compared to the control group all skills that are seen as being key for graduate success.

Most of these benefits are owing to how the game is structured. With no real storyline and limited direction on how to play, children are mostly free to decide how they want to interact with the game.

Video Game Experts Explain What Makes Fortnite So Popular

Is Fortnite Bad For Your Brain

“I hate it. It consumes his brain,” said Indianapolis, Indiana, mom Sumer Ramsey, whose teen son spent a summer playing the game. “He talks about his character like its real. He spends his real money on packs of virtual crap. He gets livid when he dies, and I do a happy dance.” Ramsey said she heard her son’s alarm go off at 5:30 one morning, and she knew it was so he could start playing “Fortnite.”

Tracey Albert of Houlton, Maine, said her son is mad she won’t let him play “Fortnite” 24 hours a day. Albert said he has pretended to go to sleep and then sneaked out of bed and stayed up until 2 or 3 a.m. secretly playing. “Some of his friends play too, so I know Im not alone,” she said. “One of his friends moms is a teacher. It makes me feel a little better.”

The only people tired of “Fortnite,” it seems, are parents. But is “Fortnite” bad for kids? Does anything good come from the hours our kids are spending glued to their screens in an effort to score the coveted Victory Royale?

“‘Fortnite is what your child makes it,” parenting and child development expert Dr. Deborah Gilboa told TODAY Parents. “There are amazing opportunities for collaboration, communication, problem-solving, perseverance, and other skills that make our kids into the humans we hope they can be.”

Parents admit “Fortnite” isn’t all bad. Julie Miner told TODAY Parents her son and daughter bonded while playing “Fortnite” together, “A nice change from arguing non-stop,” she noted.

    But probably not.

Is Minecraft Good For Your Brain

We believe Minecraft can help your brain. One of the researchers behind the Glasgow University study also believes this, and made the following statement to the Daily Mail newspaper:

Playing commercial video games can have a positive effect on communication ability, adaptability and resourcefulness suggesting that video games may have a role to play in higher education. The study also suggests that graduate skills may be improved in a relatively short amount of time, with the gains reported here achieved over a period of eight weeks and representing just 14 hours of game play.

For children particularly, it could be said that the activities in Minecraft can make them smarter and even get them ahead at school.

For example, when starting a new game on Minecraft, players will be presented with a randomized map, made up entirely of blocks. Its a bit like a LEGO project, as these blocks can be removed, rearranged, and used to build something entirely unique.

When faced with the blank canvas of a new world, children can choose to build their dream house, a castle, a hidden underground sanctuary, a town, a farm, or anything else their hearts desire.

As children continue to explore, theyll find that they can produce devices for making mundane tasks more manageable. With the addition of Redstone blocks, children can build completely customizable machines, and in doing so, learn the fundamentals of coding which is an essential skill for future careers in the UK.

    Why Is Fortnite So Compelling

When people are talking about Fortnite, they are most likely talking about Fortnite: Battle Royale, which is the version of the game where up to 100 players battle to the death, with the winner being the last player standing. The game is similar to the ultra-popular Minecraft in that part of the object of the game is construction. In Fortnite players can build forts from materials they find in their environment. They can also loot supplies and equipment from defeated players, random supply drops, and from chests they find sprinkled around the game map.

My favorite part of the game is the surprise of finding where the chests are and whats inside them, or whats flying around or what your opponents have if you kill them says Rusty, a 10-year-old Fortnite player. Often its a weapon. Sometimes you get a good weapon, sometimes its a bad one. You can get shields that protect you, you can get bombs, ammo, sometimes you can get materials.

These surprise rewards can hold a strong appeal for kids. The excitement of finding a chest and the possibility of what might be inside is one such strategy that reinforces a persons desire to keep playing and keep getting rewards.

Its a technique thats used in other combat games, along with Candy Crush, which tells players when they just missed getting to the next level. Researchers studying the effect of these near-misses found that they triggered a substantial urge to keep playing.

The Brain Specialist: Addiction Is More Complex

The World Health Organisation has recognised gaming disorder as a medical condition, but Professor Murat Yucel says playing Fortnite a lot doesn’t necessarily equate with an addiction.

“It’s not just a matter of time spent on a game, there are psychological aspects where someone is dependent on it, they’re not enjoying it anymore, they’re just doing it for the sake of doing it,” he said.

Professir Yucel is a clinical neuropsychologist at Monash University and specialises in addictions.

He says games like Fortnite are designed to exploit the brain’s vulnerabilities in the same way poker machines do.

“One of the things we’re very much attracted to are rewards, and these games are so rich with potential,” he said..

“For example, you might have a small win and there’s a celebratory sound that comes through, or a small win and you can unlock an option or get a new skin.”

These small victories trigger a dopamine burst in the brain’s reward system that trigger the habit system.

“It will say you should keep going because there’s mastery, social status or winning to be gained,” he said.

Fortnite is the hottest video game of the past year. If you have gamers in the household, particularly boys, you might be seeing more of it than you’d like! The transcript of my YouTube episode on Is Fortnite Ruining Your Kid is below.

Caught In The Spell Of Dragon’s Lair

Here’s a quick story of my own video game compulsion. You might remember the game Dragons Lair. It was a laser-disc game it was the first of its kind. And if youre a fan of Stranger Things, in season two, Dustin was playing Dragons Lair at the arcade. And that was me. I was about his age when it came out, and I was playing it at the local 7-Eleven. I was working at a pet store at the time, and all my paychecks went to playing Dragons Lair, and they were 50 cents a game back then, so translate that to todays moneyit was quite expensive! But I didnt hesitate in putting all my money from my first job at the pet store into Dragons Lair. I was so into it, that during Hurricane Alicia in Houston,… during the eye of that hurricane, I took my 10-speed Schwinn bicycle, without a helmet, rode four miles to the 7-Eleven to playguess what?Dragons Lair. So Ill be the last to blame kids playing Fortnite for getting way into the game when you look at my past.

As much as many kids love playing Fortnite, its also a source of irritability and anger for many kids. In addition to sleep loss, some other things can be pushed out by their gaming that start to take their toll. For instance, theyre not getting enough physical activity, theyre not exercising, theyre just sitting, playing the game. Maybe their in-person interactions are taking a hit. So, theyre not hanging out with their friends or interacting with family members. It could be that all their other interests have dropped off, all their other hobbies, like music or sports, that they are dropping off the radar. Or perhaps they are not attending to their academics anymore and their grades are really slipping, and we know they are going to pay for that later on.

They are not sleeping. They are not going to school. They are dropping out of social activities. A lot of kids have stopped playing sports so they can do this.

Michael Rich, a pediatrician and director of the Clinic for Interactive Media and Internet Disorders at Boston Childrens Hospital, was talking about the impact Fortnite: Battle Royale a cartoonish multiplayer shooter game is having on kids, mainly boys, some still in grade school.

We have one kid who destroyed the family car because he thought his parents had locked his device inside, Rich said. He took a hammer to the windshield.

A year and a half since the games release, Richs account is just one of many that describe an obsession so intense that kids are seeing doctors and therapists to break the games grip, in some cases losing so much weight because they refuse to stop playing to eat that doctors initially think theyre wasting away from a physical disease.

The stress on families has become so severe that parents are going to couples counselors, fighting over whos to blame for allowing Fortnite into the house in the first place and how to rein in a situation thats grown out of control.

One of the parents will get to the point of almost considering a divorce, said Rich Domenico, a therapist with LiveWell Therapy Associates, in the Back Bay. Its similar to working with parents who have a child addicted to drugs.

But that can be harder than it sounds.
