Could all those hours your child spends breaking blocks be good for his ADHD brain? Randy Kulman, Ph.D., and James Daley explain how Minecraft and other video games can be used as learning tools, and how to set screen time limits.
Gamers May Have Better Social Skills
The stereotype of a shy person who uses video games as a way to escape is not what the average gamer looks like. Past research involving children found that those who played more video games were more likely to have good social skills, perform better academically, and to have built better relationships with other students because of the social and collaborative component to some types of games.
Theyre A Fun Way To Get Tricked Into Learning
There are videos games on just about everything. Early on, developers realized that video games could be used to improve reading and math skills. Today, there are games that incorporate world history, cooking, politics, chemistry, architecture, and other topics you may not have been exposed to in school.

Why Is Minecraft So Addicting
But first: Why are so many people obsessed with Minecraft? For one, Minecraft brings together so many things that people love, like computer games, LEGOs, and videos and livestreams. Plus, Minecraft is a sandbox game, which means it has few defined goals and no real âending.â Youâre completely free to explore and build forever, which means you can get sucked in forever, too.
Teamwork And Community Engagement
Players can work together on shared servers and achieve common goals by dividing up the tasks, pooling and sharing resources, getting rid of creepers, skeletons, or zombies. They might even gather enough courage to challenge Ender Dragon and Withers.
It teaches the players to resolve their problems, communicate effectively, and become great team players. In Minecraft, everyone can also participate and engage with different communities, creating a seamless and fun-filled experience

Is Minecraft Good For Your Brain Does Minecraft Make You Smarter
There hasnât been much research into the cognitive benefits of Minecraft specifically, but there has been lots of research into the benefits of video games more generally. Studies have found evidence that video games can increase processing speed, cognitive flexibility, working memory, social skills, and problem-solving skills.
The bottom line: itâs absolutely possible to develop important cognitive skills while having fun playing Minecraft. Minecraft can even be a gateway to deeper interest in computers and STEM. A Learning And Development Tool For All Ages
As many adults who have tried to learn another language or go back to school later in life have found, learning is much harder as an adult than it was as a child. Childrens brains are like sponges, soaking up the information given to them. They are also much less afraid of failure, which would prevent many adults from even attempting to take on learning a new skill. However, video games are poised in such a place that they can be used by both adult and child to learn a new skill.
With video games, you are able to go at your own pace something very important for adult learners. They also encourage children to exercise critical thinking, resilience, and creative problem solving.
The teaching ability of video games has not gone unnoticed. Many companies have begun incorporating various subject matter into their games and the most common of these is programming and coding. These games are fun, highly interactive, and actually teach children coding and programming skills while solving puzzles.

Encouraging Creativity And Project Planning
Perhaps the most striking benefit offered by Minecraft is its endless scope for creativity. It provides many of the same building opportunities as LEGO, only with an average of 921.6 quadrillion blocks per world. With that much material, its possible to build just about anything that your kid could imagine.
If in any doubt, just take a look at Westeroscraft. Arguably one of the most expansive and breathtaking Minecraft projects around today, this community-based project is dedicated to recreating the continent of Westeros, from George R. R. Martins A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Pretty much any screenshot from this project is mind-blowing, especially when you consider the time, planning, and sheer dedication it would have taken to get this far in the project.
Although its unlikely that a younger child will churn out something of this scope, it does go to show just how much you can create with the materials available in Minecraft. The sky truly is the limit when it comes to this game.
Video Games Can Improve Your Vision
As long as youre not staring at the screen for 10 hours straight , playing video games can actually make for better vision. In one study, 10 male students who were not gamers were trained for 30 hours in first-person action games and then tested against 10 non-gamers. The students who played were able to see objects more clearly in cluttered spaces because of improved spatial resolution. They were able to train their brains to see smaller details, because in each game, those details turned out to be important.

How Can We Get Her To Stop Playing Without A Fight
Give your child a 10-minute warning and set a visual timer. Do this with other activities, as well, so your children become accustomed to it. Then, have them engage in a specific routine after video-game play, such as a brief game discussion, a healthy snack, or going outside. Finally, apply clear and routine consequences for meltdowns and inappropriate behavior. Parents sometimes need to take away Minecraft privileges for a brief amount of time to show that they mean business before the kids respond.
Minecraft Vs Roblox: Which Is Best For You Or Your Child
Minecraft vs. Roblox is a big battle between two of the leading sandbox games. They both let players build and explore worlds, go on adventures alongside others, and create something akin to using digital Lego bricks. Even so, there are differences youll want to know about before choosing one. This post will look at Minecraft vs. Roblox in a number of areas, and which ones best for you .

Not convincingly. More than 100 scientific reports and surveys have studied screen habits and well-being in young people, looking for emotional and behavioral differences, as well as changes in attitude, such as in body image. In 2014, scientists from Queens University Belfast reviewed 43 of the best designed such studies. The studies found that social networking allows people to broaden their circle of social contacts in ways that could be both good and bad, for instance by exposing young people to abusive content. The reviews authors concluded that there was an absence of robust causal research regarding the impact of social media on the mental well-being of young people. In short: Results have been mixed and sometimes contradictory.
Psychologists have also examined whether playing violent video games is connected to aggressive behavior. More than 200 such studies have been carried out; some researchers found links, others have not. One challenge in studying this and other aspects of screen time is identifying the direction of causality: Do children who play a lot of violent video games become more aggressive as a result, or were they drawn to such content because they were more aggressive from the start?

Many parents are concerned about their childrens increasing playtimes leading to lethargy and perceived health problems. However, parents can make their playtime worthwhile by promoting games that offer educational benefits and encourage healthy brain activities. That being said, is Minecraft the perfect substitute? Or does it offer no additional benefit at all?
Considering the category of educational, strategy, and non-violent games, Minecraft undoubtedly offers one of the best platforms. It promotes a wide range of fundamental skills, including creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving. It also complements elementary skills like reading, writing, and math.
Minecraft is the gateway for a fun-filled and engaging world that has immense potential ranging from secret block combinations to building huge skyscrapers. Not only does it offer a lot of fun for your leisure and family time, but it also has some really good benefits on offer.
Can Video Games Be Addictive
Absolutely. Theres no question about that. Kids with ADHD have more difficulty transitioning away from playing video games than do other kids. Minecraft makes that even more problematic because it is a sandbox game you can go anywhere in the game and do anything you want; theres not a particular set of goals and structures. As a result, sometimes its endless and that makes it very difficult for kids to stop playing.
Games Can Teach You To Be A Better Problem Solver
Open-world, mission-based, and multi-level games are designed like complex puzzles that take several hours to solve. Occasionally, the solution varies based on your actions in the game. Learning to think on your feet and strategize in a fast-paced fantasy environment is a skill that can translate to the real world. One long-term study published in 2013 showed that children who played strategy-based games showed an improvement in problem-solving skillsand thus, tended to get better gradesthe next school year.

Isnt That What The Nih Study Aims To Address
Yes. The ongoing ABCD study expects to follow 11,800 children through adolescence, with annual magnetic-resonance imaging, to see if changes in the brain are linked to behavior or health. The study began in 2013, recruiting 21 academic research centers, and initially focused on the effects of drug and alcohol use on the adolescent brain. Since then, the project has expanded and now includes other targets such as the effects of brain injury, screen time, genetics and an array of other environmental factors.
The recently published paper covered by 60 Minutes provided an early glimpse of the anticipated results. A research team, based at the University of California, San Diego, analyzed brain scans from more than 4,500 preteens and correlated those with the childrens amount of screen time and their scores on language and thinking tests. The findings were a mixed bag. Some heavy screen users showed cortical thinning at younger ages than expected; but this thinning is part of natural brain maturation, and scientists dont know what that difference means. Some heavy users scored below the curve on aptitude tests, others performed well.
The authors acknowledge as much.
This diversity of findings provides an important public health message, that screen media activity is not simply bad for the brain or bad for brain-related functioning, they concluded.
Kids Stuck At Home Are Learning While Playing Minecraft
The popular Microsoft game has 50 million downloads for its free educational content in COVID time.
- Thursday, June 11, 2020 1:30am
With schools closed and many a parent thrust into the difficult role of managing a job, a household and a childs education, heres one unexpected bit of positive news to emerge from the coronavirus outbreak: Video games are good for your brain. Well, some games, at least.
Minecraft, the Microsoft-owned game known for its user-driven content, creative use of blocks and monsters that come out at night, has been at the forefront of mainstream games that offer educational content. The studios Minecraft: Education Edition has for the last few years played host to virtual curricula that have allowed students to visit and learn about global monuments, sharpen math skills, understand coding or take puzzle-filled explorations to places as varied as the human body or a NASA-approved jaunt into the International Space Station.
Much of this content, which was at first fueled by educators in the Minecraft community before Microsoft brought it in-house in 2016, had previously been available only to schools and teachers and worked in tandem with Microsoft educational accounts. In March, however, Microsoft made an assortment of Minecrafts popular educational tools available for free, with easier access for all players via the Minecraft Marketplace.
And players have flocked to it.

Which Is Easier To Set Up For A Childs Account: Roblox Or Minecraft
In our opinion, Roblox is by far the most straightforward to set up when it comes to accounts for children. Its almost as simple as setting up an account for yourself.
We should pay special attention to Minecraft here, because its such a complicated process that it could put lots of parents off. You may also want to add in-game currency to either Roblox or Minecraft. If you purchase as a parent, this is a simple process. Though, if you wish to add currency for a child, the process is more involved.
Is It Ok To Let My Kid Play Minecraft For Hours
An open-ended building game with seemingly endless possibilities, Minecraft can be mighty engrossing. On the plus side, Minecraft can reinforce geometry concepts as it strengthens players’ thinking and reasoning skills, creativity, and even collaboration. The game has a strong, positive online community and even has an educational module teachers can modify for classroom lessons on different subjects. On the downside, as you’ve discovered, it’s a time suck.
Even “good” games can be played to excess, and homework, chores, family obligations, and real-world social activities can take a backseat when kids can’t — or won’t — stop playing. And even if your kid is learning from the game, other areas of life are important, too.
Help your kids self-regulate. Start by having a conversation about all their daily duties and figure out how much game time fits in. Create a calendar, have them set a timer, and reward them for sticking to the time limits. If you’ve tried this and want more control over their screen time, consider installing a parental-control program that lets you set daily screen limits for different programs.

Minecraft Vs Roblox: Parental Controls
Because many children play both games, parental controls should be a consideration in Minecraft vs. Roblox.
With Minecraft, this is all handled within your devices and Microsoft accounts. For example, the Xbox Bedrock Edition requires you to set console-wide parental settings, especially for marketplace transactions. Theres a poor mechanic here, where a childs account cant purchase Minecoins, but a parent cant transfer them either.
On the other hand, Roblox handles parental controls and consent in a fantastic way. Theres a dedicated page for parents that explains what Roblox is and how children keep safe on the app. For example, there are clothing detection algorithms, customizable controls, chat filters, and more.
Imaginative Behaviors In Minecraft
Imaginative behavior is based on the brains ability to draw upon and combine elements from our previous experiences. Educational scholar Len Vygotsky wrote in 1930
The brain is not only the organ that stores and retrieves our previous experience, it is also the organ that combines and creatively reworks elements of this past experience and uses them to generate new propositions and new behavior. This creative activity, based on the ability of our brain to combine elements, is called imagination or fantasy in psychology.
So here are eight things I see happening when children and adolescents play Minecraft.
- Sensation Learning as sense-pleasure
- Narrative Learning as unfolding story
- Challenge Learning as obstacle course
- Fellowship Learning as social framework
- Discovery Learning as uncharted territory
- Expression Learning as soap box
- Submission Learning as mindless pastime
Note that of these eight ways of playing Minecraft, children switch between them. One minute they are searching a cavern , the next they are building a Library . At times, when they lack direction or motivation with other ways to learn, they wander about the open world in a state of Submission until something happens.
To me, parents can be the something happens. Even if they dont play the game. Asking how high can you build a tower switches the childs effort from submission to challenge for example. In many ways, a teacher or parent in a world without games used to do this all the time.

Can Either Game Inspire My Would
Both Roblox and Minecraft support modding and hacking. In particular, Roblox is set up for exactly this. Though, wed say that due to the programming language used and the interface, its not the most optimal for children learning to code or developing their skills.
Minecraft is top-notch when it comes to mods, especially for younger players. You can use a number of different programming languages, such as Java and Python. Whats more, there are many course platforms that let you learn how to both code and mod Minecraft at the same time Tynker is a standout service.
Are There Disadvantages To Playing Minecraft
Of course, anything thatâs potentially âaddictiveâ could have drawbacks. If you experience withdrawal symptoms when video games are taken away, unsuccessfully try to quit gaming, or lose interest in other activities and relationships because of gaming, you may be suffering from a condition called âInternet gaming disorder.â This disorder can lead to health and social issues.
Internet gaming disorder is not common, and there are ways to set healthy boundaries to reduce the risk of addiction to Minecraft or any other video game. Try to play Minecraft for no more than one hour a day, and keep a balanced diet of other activities and hobbies.

Video Games Can Improve Manual Dexterity
Controller-based games can be great for your hands. In a study involving a group of surgeons, researchers found that those who played video games were faster at performing advanced procedures and made 37 percent fewer mistakes than those who didnt. Special video games have also been used as physical therapy to help stroke victims regain control of their hands and wrists.

How Minecraft Helps Build Focus
When playing Minecraft, the ability to focus to really sustain your attention on one task for an extended period of time is incredibly important. If you want to build something large or complicated, you have to stay on a particular task through numerous different steps and processes, sometimes for hours on end. When a child is building something in Minecraft, its amazing to think he has ADHD at all because hes clearly focusing so intently. And the idea is that hes exercising that skill in the Minecraft environment, building up the attention muscle so that he can use it at school and while doing homework.
How Both Games Deal With Microtransactions
When examining microtransactions in Minecraft vs. Roblox, both have a microtransation system and include virtual currency.
With Minecraft, youll buy Minecoins to use in the Marketplace.
There are many different types of packs to buy, such as textures, skins, and more. There are also mini-games and adventure packs, too. Microsofts connections mean you can find top-notch adventure worlds to purchase, such as Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog that dont resemble Minecraft at all.
Roblox uses a freemium business model, although you can access most of the game without needing to pay. The most prominent use of microtransactions are with player skins clothing for your character. Youll also find that some games, such as Jailbreak. will also have extra purchases.
Wed say that the Minecraft way of handling microtransactions is easier to police, and there is often more value in what you buy than Roblox. On the other hand, part of the Roblox experience is about kitting out your character to show off to others, but all that changes with a subscription.

When Should I Be Worried
Roughly 3-10% of children are at risk for Internet gaming disorder. Your child may be at risk if he experiences some withdrawal symptoms when the game is taken away, if he wants to spend more and more time playing, and if hes been unsuccessful in his attempts to stay away from gaming on his own. If he loses interest in previous activities and hobbies, and continues to play even though its causing a great deal of distress with family, those are additional red flags.
Benefits Of Playing Minecraft
Some games can teach players skills they can use later in life or improve skills they already possess. Research has proven that playing certain games is good for the mind and even body, and Minecraft is one of those games. Here are 10 benefits of playing Minecraft.
