As a result of that, we can make sense of the big picture. Our society is based on the input of information to young individuals in order for them to function as a productive and contributing part of it.
Most successful individuals are guided by the dominant use of their left brain hemisphere. We can concur that given the state of our human development, we are guided and led by those who mostly use the left hemisphere of the brain.
As with all things in nature, the balance represents the perfection of existence to all there is.
When we are guided by logic, we are unable to enjoy the totality and completeness of all we perceive as being the one. The explanation often opens another question and the pursuit of new answers.
When we dive into our creativity our perception shifts into a timeless voyage, which is, in essence, incomprehensible to any kind of logical reasoning. We rid ourselves to expand our knowledge and boundaries of what is possible.
Logical reasoning relies on all that we learn during our period of growing up. Later we are all influenced by education. Intentionally or not, most educational systems mold us into individuals who must solve and complete tasks.

Right Brain Left Brain: A Misnomer
The human brain is basically symmetrical, split down the middle: the right cerebral hemisphere receives sensory input from and directs movement on the left side of the body, while the left hemisphere governs corresponding functions for the right side.
Symmetry only goes so far, howeverthere are differences, too. Yet in recent years, the two sides of the brain have come to symbolize two sides of human nature the left brain hailed as logical,analytical, and intellectual, and the intuitive right brain as the avatar of emotion and creativity. A host of popular books, educational strategies, and even therapeutic interventions have ensued, promising to enhance abilities and relieve mental maladies by optimizing function on one or the other side of the cerebral cortex.
The reality is not so simpleand a good deal more interesting. And like so much in neuroscience, far from fully understood.
Cerebrum Cerebral Cortex And Brain Hemispheres
The cerebrum is involved in functions of higher consciousness. Most of the brain, around 85 per cent, is taken up by the cerebrum. It is this structure that gives the brain its distinctive shape of two halves – the right and left hemispheres. The cortex is essentially a sheet of neurons about 3mm thick, which forms the grey matter.The cerebral cortex is folded in on itself this provides the characteristic ridges and valleys of the brain. Connections between neurons and with remote nuclei are carried by a myriad of axons, forming the white matter. The right and left hemispheres are further divided into four lobes. These include:
- Frontal – located behind the forehead. Functions include consciousness, thinking, emotions, language and memory.
- Parietal – located on the top and rear of the head. These lobes process information from the sensory nerves and contribute to voluntary movement.
- Temporal – located over each ear. Functions include memory and processing sounds, face recognition, recognition of complex objects and multi-sensory integration.
- Occipital – located at the back of the head. The main function is interpretation of sensory information from the eyes.

How To Improve The Functions Of Brain Hemispheres
- Participate in various activities. Lets say, participate in art activities but learn mathematics as well.
- Provide environments that stimulate the activity of both brain hemispheres. For example, make with child a masquerade masks in which both of you will participate Draw a mask, think about details, calculate costs, plan to purchase,
- Use both hands in some simple actions such as using a fork and knife or drawing.
- Often play ball by using the non dominant hand. You can play ball in such a way with your kid.
- Wash your teeth or brush your hair with a non dominant hand and promote the child to do the same.
- Teach juggle and encourage the child to teach the same. Juggling represents a great balancing ability.
- Play equilibrium sports such as dancing, boating, wrestling, running, swimming, etc. Encourage the child to play these sports as well.
- Play the piano or some other musical instrument. Playing musical instruments stimulate the balance between the two hemispheres, actually promote functions of both brain hemispheres.

Read about and listen to the creative ideas of others. You might discover the seed of an idea you can grow, or set your own imagination free.
Try something new. Take up a creative hobby, such as playing an instrument, drawing, or storytelling. A relaxing hobby can help your mind wander to new places.
Look within. This can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and what makes you tick. Why do you gravitate toward certain activities and not others?
Keep it fresh. Break your set patterns and go outside your comfort zone. Take a trip to a place youve never been. Immerse yourself in another culture. Take a course in a subject you havent studied before.
Even something as creative as music takes time, patience, and practice. The more you practice any new activity, the more your brain adapts to the new information.

The Two Hemispheres Of Our Brain
Our brain is divided into 2 halves, or hemispheres, that are connected to each other by the corpus callosum. These two hemispheres control the motion in and receive sensory inputs from the opposite side of our body. In other words, the left hemisphere controls the right side of our body and also receives sensory inputs from the right side of our body.
There Is Decoupling Of Spatial But Not Temporal Processes After Callosotomy
Franz and colleagues showed that commissurotomized patients could coordinate two conflicting spatial programmes, whereas a normal control was impaired . In effect, the spatial maps associated with a movement could be localized and isolated in each separated hemisphere. At the same time, while spatial information between the limbs remained separate, the temporal coordination of a bimanual movement remained largely intact.
In following up a partially sectioned patient, Eliassen and colleagues discovered that the integration of direction information for two-handed movements takes place exclusively across the posterior corpus callosum . They showed that the timing of a movement’s initiation is affected by anterior and posterior callosotomy. The ability of the two hands to move simultaneously was affected by the callosal surgery. Thus, the distribution of spatial and temporal signals to integrate bimanual movement is dissociable with regard to callosal topography. Posterior cortical areas, the parietal lobes, are the source of a spatial motor signal used during bimanual movements. Eliassen and colleagues went on to show that anterior and posterior fibres are not equipotential . Anterior callosotomy disrupts the simultaneity of self-initiated bimanual movements more than it does the production of bimanual movements in response to a visual stimulus.

The human brain evolved to have two halves and a new review of previous research suggests that this dual design may confer special benefits.
Scientists have long known that the differnt halves of human brains perform different functions. For example, the left half or left hemisphere is generally responsible for language and speech, whereas the right one generally handles emotions and facial recognition.
In the new review, published today in the journal Neuron, researchers zeroed in on why the brain’s split design is beneficial.
One of these benefits is that having a specific area of the brain that’s responsible for performing a specific, complex task may make it easier for a person to perform this task well, the reviewers found.
In addition, this specialization could make it easier for the brain to perform many different functions at once, they said. In other words, if one part of the brain is taking care of one specific function such as language and speech, then another part remains free to take care of something else, such as facial recognition. This may in turn allow the brain to juggle these different functions more efficiently.
Left Brain And Right Brain Theory
A person can either be right-brained or left-brained. It means that one side of the brain is dominant. The left-brained dominant people are methodical and analytical in nature. Those right-brained dominant are creative and artistic.
The left brain and right brain theory was created in the 1960s by a psychologist named Roger W. Sperry.

At a superficial level of observation, separating half of the neocortex from the other half appears to have little effect on cognition. Verbal IQ remains intact, as do within-hemisphere reaction times to perceptual stimuli and problem-solving capacity. Yet standardized memory tests administered postoperatively hint at an impairment of short-term memory . Recent studies have extended these observations.

While there is a left brain and a right brain, their use in popular culture has created a widespread misunderstanding. Itâs common to believe that the left brain is for logical thinking and the right brain is for creativity. People categorize themselves as being left or right brain-oriented depending on their interests and skills.
Scientists have been able to look closer at the brain and see that itâs more complicated than âleft = logical.â It wasnât until the 1960s when split-brain surgeries, a treatment of epilepsy, gave scientists the chance to investigate each half of the brain separately.
Scientists deduced that the left brain was better at language and rhythm, while the right brain was better at emotions and melody. However, this doesnât mean that the two halves are entirely separate.
The myth of the totally opposite hemispheres persists for a variety of reasons.
- It satisfies the need for order.
- Like astrological signs, it gives people a defined personality type.
- People naturally see creativity and logic as opposites.

The Left Hemisphere Possesses A Unique Capacity To Interpret Behaviour And Unconsciously Driven Emotional States
Several years ago we observed how the left, dominant-speaking hemisphere dealt with behaviours we had elicited from the disconnected right hemisphere. We came upon the phenomenon by using a simultaneous concept test. The patient was shown two pictures, one exclusively to the left hemisphere and one exclusively to the right, and was asked to choose from an array of pictures placed in full view in front of him those that were associated with the pictures lateralized to the left and right brain. In one example of this kind of test, a picture of a chicken claw was flashed to the left hemisphere and a picture of a snow scene to the right hemisphere. Of the array of pictures placed in front of the subject, the obviously correct association is a chicken for the chicken claw and a shovel for the snow scene. Patient P.S. responded by choosing the shovel with the left hand and the chicken with the right. When asked why he chose these items, his left hemisphere replied `Oh, that’s simple. The chicken claw goes with the chicken, and you need a shovel to clean out the chicken shed’. Here the left brain, observing the left hand’s response, interprets that response in a context consistent with its sphere of knowledgeâone that does not include information about the left hemifield snow scene. We called this left hemisphere process `the interpreter’ .
Where Did The Myth Of The Right Brain And The Left Brain Come From
This myth arose from the misinterpretation of Roger Sperrys experiments on divided brains. Studying the effects of epilepsy, Sperry found that cutting corpus callosum could reduce or eliminate epileptic seizures.
However, these patients also suffered other symptoms after communication channels between the brain hemispheres were severed. For example, many brain-split patients found themselves unable to name objects that were processed on the right side but were able to name those processed on the left side .
From this information, Sperry suggested that language was controlled exclusively by the left side of the brain.

The interpreter’s activities can be viewed on a larger canvas. Most neuroscientists want an understanding of consciousness but also a neuroscience of human consciousness. When considering the problem of consciousness, it is important to consider the possibility that consciousness is an instinctâa built-in property of brains. Like all instincts, it is just there. One does not learn to be conscious and one cannot unlearn the reality of conscious experience. Some day a more mechanistic understanding of its operation will be to hand, but it will probably not be a personally fulfilling one.
We should abandon our expectations that a scientific understanding of consciousness will sweep away our sense of strangeness about its nature. Consider our reproductive instinct. Does it help our sense of desire to understand the role of testosterone when we see a shapely figure across the room? Or take the human instinct for language. Does it help us to enjoy language more when we understand that grammar is a universal built-in reflex but that our lexicon is learned? It would seem that something wonderfully new and complex happens as the brain enlarges to its full human form. Whatever happens, it triggers our capacity for self-reflection and all that goes with it. How do we account for this?
More Similarities Than Differences
The primary division of labor between hemispheres is in the sensory and motor domain.
The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body.
Except for this type of basic sensory-motor separation, the two sides of the brain are much more similar to each other than they are different.
We know from neuroimaging and other neuroscientific methods that both sides participate in most tasks, especially complex ones involving creativity and logic.
Additionally, experimental studies have failed to characterize people into sub-groups according to a dominance of left- or right-sided brain networks .
This suggests that there is no real evidence that this factor influences personality of personal preference for specific types of cognitive tasks.
