TUESDAY, July 17, 2018 Children with autism show abnormalities in a deep brain circuit that typically makes socializing enjoyable, a new study finds.

Using MRI brain scans, researchers found that kids with autism showed differences in the structure and function of a brain circuit called the mesolimbic reward pathway.

That circuit, located deep within the brain, helps you take pleasure in social interaction something that people with autism struggle with, the study authors explained.

Experts said the findings, published July 17 in the journal Brain, offer insight into whats happening in the autism-affected brain.

One of the hallmarks of the disorder is difficulty with recognizing and responding to other peoples social cues. The new study suggests that, due to brain wiring, those interactions just do not feel as rewarding to people with autism.

If a young child does not feel the inherent pleasure of socializing, the researchers said, he might avoid it and then miss the chance to develop complex social skills.

However, the findings do not definitively prove that the brain abnormality causes social difficulties, said Kaustubh Supekar, a research scientist at Stanford University School of Medicine who worked on the study.

The researchers scanned children who were ages 7 to 13. And its possible, Supekar said, that the brain circuit did not develop normally because the children lacked years of typical social interactions.

In addition, this technology produced images with higher resolution over a larger field of view in a shorter amount of time than previous contrast-enhanced MR angiography techniques, he said.

Arterial occlusive disease consists of narrowed or blocked arteries. It commonly affects the supra-aortic arteries, which supply blood to the brain, and is a leading cause of stroke. Currently DSA is the reference standard for evaluating these arteries. However, in 2.5 percent of cases DSA can cause a mini-stroke, and, in rare instances, permanent neurological damage. Therefore, CT and MR angiography are increasingly being used to diagnose arterial occlusive disease. As technology has improved, MR angiography offers advantages over CT, particularly because it delivers no ionizing radiation to the patient.

Dr. Nael predicts that in most cases, contrast-enhanced MR angiography could replace other diagnostic techniques for evaluation of all the arteries that supply blood to the brain.

As the technology evolves, MR angiography will likely become even faster and more powerful, he said.

The role of MRA for evaluation of patients with vasa previa needs to be further investigated.

How Should I Prepare

A new type of brain scan may help to detect Alzheimers early, using no radiation and at less cost than other techniques, researchers report. Doctors at the University of Pennsylvanias Perelman School of Medicine have developed a form of magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, that detects brain changes that signal Alzheimers disease. The doctors have developed a modification to the technique called arterial spin labeling, or ASL-MRI. Small studies show, this may be a useful way to diagnose probable early dementia.

MRI scans are routinely used in hospitals to check for tumors and other issues, and seniors with memory problems may undergo the procedure to rule out brain tumors, strokes or other problems that may be causing the deficits. If Alzheimers is suspected, they may then undergo another scanning procedure, such as a PET scan.

The advantage of the new ASL-MRI technique is that someone could undergo brain scanning in a single session to help determine whether Alzheimers may be present. The technique looks for changes in blood flow and the uptake of blood sugar, or glucose, in the memory centers of the brain. It requires about an additional 20 minutes compared to standard MRI scans.

Studies show that the MRI method is similar in effectiveness to current PET scans that inject a radioactive dye to measure these brain changes. However, the ASL-MRI method uses no radiation and costs one-fourth as much.
