Where To Find A Great Medicinal Mushroom Dispensary

Your Brain On Shrooms

After years of being stigmatized, psilocybin mushrooms can finally be used medicinally in Canada and parts of the US, and there are tons of great options even online where you can find your mushroom dispensary of choice.

If youre curious about the helpful side effects that mushroom capsules can bring you, its a good idea to talk to your doctor, and try it out for yourself.

Psychedelic Mushrooms Can Increase Neuron Connections In Mice

We not only saw a 10% increase in the number of neuronal connections, but also they were on average about 10% larger, so the connections were stronger as well, said the studys lead author Alex Kwan, who is also an associate professor of both psychiatry and neuroscience at Yale, in an embargoed release shared with IE. Earlier laboratory experiments hinted that psilocybin, in addition to the anesthetic ketamine, can reduce the effects of depression. But this latest research showed these compounds also increase the density of dendritic spines, creating small protrusions on nerve cells capable of enhancing the way information transmits from one neuron to the next. Depression and chronic stress are known factors in the reduction of these crucial neuronal connections.

In collaboration Ling-Xiao Shao, a postdoctoral associate of Yales School of Medicine, Kwan employed a laser-scanning microscope to create high-resolution images of dendritic spines in living mice, and track them for several days. The duo observed rising numbers and girth of dendritic spines on the first day following exposure to psilocybin. Crucially, these changes persisted for at least a month, and the mice previously placed in stressful situations exhibited improved behavior, with increased neurotransmitter activity, following the administration of psilocybin.

What The Research On Psilocybin Therapy Shows

Whats most interesting about psilocybin is its ability to address a few different types of conditions. The most promising potential is for addictionsmoking, alcoholism, cocaine, says Matthew W. Johnson, PhD, a professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University and associate director of the Center for Psychedelic & Consciousness Research. His ongoing pilot study on nicotine addiction has found that 80% of participants who underwent psilocybin therapy quit smoking, and 60% of them were still abstinent 16 months laterimpressive compared to the 35% success rate of varenicline, the most effective of other smoking cessation therapies. The idea that something could be efficacious for multiple substances is, itself, very atypical and exciting, says Johnson. Theres a very good case that psilocybin can treat the psychology of addiction, not just alleviate the withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings.

Beyond those applications, researchers are also looking at psilocybin for anorexia, Alzheimers , post-traumatic stress disorder, demoralization syndrome experienced by long-term HIV survivors, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. We dont have the answers yet, but I would say theyre good bets, says Johnson.

What magic mushrooms do to your brain and body

Although psilocybin, shrooms, magic mushrooms, and psychedelic mushrooms are common terms referring to the same group of hallucinogenic fungi, there are more than 75 known species containing psilocybin or psilocin, the chemicals that trigger hallucinations and euphoria in people who ingest these mushroom species. Mushrooms with hallucinogenic properties have been used for religious rituals and recreation for thousands of years, but only in the last few decades have scientists started to understand the impact these substances can have on the human body.

What Effects Should I Expect From Magic Mushrooms

A moderate dose of psilocybin mushrooms takes you on a trip where your emotional experiences are intensified and your level of introspection is heightened. Your entire psychological functioning is altered as you go through a transient state between being awake and sleep. MRI scans of the brain have actually shown that a psilocybin trip is pretty much like dreaming.

One hour or so after ingesting psilocybin, you will start to go through changes of perception like illusions, loss of sense of time and synaesthesia. Visuals will become more enhanced and you will start seeing halos around lights and objects and sometimes even geometric patterns when you close your eyes.

Youll feel awed and enchanted by the world around you, but at the same time youll feel connected to it and very much at peace. For some people, changes in the way they perceive things can last for a number of days.

Expect your thoughts and emotions to also go through some changes. Thoughts and feelings that you keep under the lid in your ordinary life may start to bubble to the surface. Try not to suppress these feelings instead let them reach their logical conclusion. People who experience strong negative emotions report also feeling calm and detached afterwards.

Ego Oneness And The Claustrum

The claustrum is one of multiple brain regions that is rich in serotonin 2A receptors and organizes brain activity. Cognitive neuroscientist Frederick Barrett and colleagues at the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research recently examined how psilocybin affects neural activity in the claustrum.

Published in NeuroImage, their breakthrough study used real-time brain scans in humans to show that psilocybin reduces activity in the claustrum by up to 30 percent. This coincides with people’s subjective feelings of ego dissolution and oneness with their environment while under the influence of the drug. The less active the claustrum, the stronger the psychedelic effect reported by participants, including mystical and emotional experiences, and a reduced sense of self. The authors write that the work supports a possible role of the claustrum in the subjective and therapeutic effects of psilocybin.

In this mysterious part of the brain, a thin sheet of neurons sends and receives signals to and from other brain regions. Growing evidence suggests the claustrum orchestrates consciousness gathering, sending and integrating information from almost every brain region. Some, like neuroscientist Christof Koch, believe that the sense of self and ego rest here.

Psilocybin Works Differently Than Antidepressants

Your Brain On Shrooms

More and more studies are now being done using magic mushrooms to treat certain conditions like anxiety, addiction and even depression with some level of success. Theyve also been known to help manage illnesses like cluster headaches.

Neuroscientists are still not sure exactly how psychedelics work. However, MRI imaging has been able to show that patients brains experience reduced blood flow and appear to rest better after taking psilocybin. By contrast, patients suffering from depression and anxiety tend to display abnormally high brain activity.

Patients on psilocybin also undergo a resetting of their brains where the connections between various regions of their brains break down and then reintegrate. This could be the reason why persons treated with psilocybin are able to overcome compulsive behavior as well as depression.

Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, of the Imperial London College, says participants whove received psilocybin therapy go through a cathartic emotional release, unlike the effects of antidepressants, which only dull the patients emotions. According to him, antidepressants and behavioral therapy, the traditional methods of treating depression, can take several weeks if not months to show results and dont always produce the desired results. Psilocybin encourages patients to face their depression head-on because it works in tandem with our serotonin system to enhance emotional responses.

Long Term Effects Of Shrooms On The Body

The physical long term effects of shrooms are also elusive. It is known that the more psilocybin a person ingests, the more of a tolerance they build up to it. If a person takes enough shrooms in a short period of time, they will stop feeling any effects from them at all until they stop ingesting them for at least several days. Physical addiction does not occur, but psychological addiction is a possibility.

Another physical risk of taking mushrooms is poisoning if the wrong shrooms are taken. If a person ingests poisonous shrooms by accident they can have many bad side effects. A potential lasting side effect of taking toxic mushrooms is liver damage, which could be fatal.

Most of the long term physical effects of shrooms are related to decisions a person made while tripping. Because shrooms can lower inhibitions and increase feelings of euphoria, a person might take bigger risks, like attempting dangerous physical feats or having unprotected sex. Injuries, broken bones, and STDs could affect a person long after their trip is over.

Every individual can experience different short and long term effects of shrooms. There are many factors that can influence the effects a person feels, such as their weight, environment, expectations, brain chemistry, pre-existing conditions, or medications taken.

Magic Mushrooms Raise Your Blood Pressure

Any drug that increases your heart rate is likely to increase your blood pressure too. Shrooms are no different.

The effect that shrooms have on your blood pressure depends on:

  • The dose
  • Other drugs used
  • Your cardiac health

Larger doses are more likely to affect your blood pressure. Youre also more likely to have side effects if youve had blood pressure issues in the past. If you have a history of high blood pressure or stroke, you shouldnt use shrooms.

Any effect on your blood pressure is usually temporary and goes away after the trip ends.

Again, you shouldnt mix shrooms with molly, Ritalin, or other psychostimulant drugs. This is especially true if you have a history of heart disease or blood pressure problems!

Shrooms And Lsd Are Decently Similar In Effects

This redditor puts it well: LSD is electric, mushrooms are spiritual. Both are trippy. Your mood and mindset is more stable on LSD, but you are able to wade into greater emotional depths with shrooms.

Note that:

Dosage has a much greater impact on effects than substance does – 100 micrograms of LSD is roughly equivalent to 2.4g of shrooms, and 100 micrograms of LSD will feel more similar to 2.4g of shrooms than it would feel to 300 micrograms of LSD.

LSD lasts longer, typically around 10-14 hours. The effects of shrooms tends to last for 4-6 hours.5 On the graph, magic mushrooms = psilocybin.

How To Recognize Shrooms

This Is Your Brain On Shrooms

Mushrooms containing psilocybin look like dried ordinary mushrooms with long, slender stems that are whitish-gray and dark brown caps that are light brown or white in the center. Dried mushrooms are a rusty brown color with isolated areas of off-white.

Magic mushrooms can be eaten, mixed with food, or brewed like tea for drinking. They can also be mixed with cannabis or tobacco and smoked. Liquid psilocybin is also available, which is the naturally occurring psychedelic drug found in liberty caps. The liquid is clear brown and comes in a small vial.

How Are Shrooms Detected

Shrooms can be detected by a variety of methods including lab tests. The time frame is dependent on the type of testing including urine, saliva, blood and hair. If you receive a positive result after your first test, you will be tested again for confirmation. The drug can be detected in your blood a maximum of 30 minutes after you use shrooms.

The substance will stay in your blood for as long as 24 hours. Blood tests are rarely used for testing due to the short detection windows and invasiveness of the test. The most common test for shrooms is urine. The substance generally remains in your urine between 24 and 48 hours after your last dosage. If you consume shrooms on a regular basis, testing can detect the substance for as long as three days after your last dose.

In most cases, shrooms will not show in your hair growth for approximately a week. The substance can be detected for as long as 90 days by testing your hair follicles. Psilocybin enters your system in very small amounts. This means more hair is required for a drug test than with any other substance.

Why ‘shrooms Can Lead To Mystical Experiences

If you’ve ever had a trip where you felt connected to the truths of the universe, the default mode network or DMN, might be responsible. It’s the network of brain regions that helps with things like higher-level memory. “Under normal conditions, different regions of the brain work closely together as functional networks,”Meg Spriggs Ph.D, a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London, tells Bustle. “But under the influence of psychedelics , these networks begin to disintegrate, and we start to see an increase in global connectivity.” The opening up of brain networks might lead to all the mystical experiences that people have when they’re tripping out.

Spriggs says that this “rebooting” of the brain’s networks could help with mental health disorders. “With a disintegration of brain networks comes a relaxation of a person’s prior beliefs,” she says. “This then breaks the shackles of rigid thought patterns.”A study published in Nature in 2017 from the Imperial College team found that this “resetting” might be a big part of psilocybin’s positive effects on people with treatment-resistant depression.
