What Does Fluoride Do To Your Brain

Don't Miss

Some Believe Fluoridation Hinders Neurodevelopment In Children

Some controversial claims that the world is flat, for instance, or that apricot kernels can cure cancer are really easy to disprove. What happens, though, when a claim appears to have solid research behind it by scientists from Americas prestigious Harvard University, no less? This is the case with fluoride in drinking water, a practice that has been going on for decades and has been repeatedly shown to reduce tooth decay in children and adults.

But some people believe fluoridation is dangerous and try to have it stopped by spreading scare stories.

A very small group think it is downright evil, alleging that it was invented by Nazis, or the American government, or lizards from outer space, as a form of mind control, to turn us all into zombies. This is very easy to debunk. When was the last time you saw a zombie with nice teeth?

In recent times it has been claimed there is scientific evidence that fluoride in the water reduces the IQ of children, and that this has been proved by scientists from Harvard.

So, does fluoride in drinking water make you stupid, and did Harvard scientists say so? No, and no.

The study usually quoted by anti-fluoride activists dates from 2012. It was indeed written by Harvard scientists a team led by Anna Choi, from the universitys Department of Environmental Health and it does indeed say the results support the possibility of an adverse effect of high fluoride exposure on childrens neurodevelopment.

How Does Fluoride Damage The Brain

Along with the large variety of health issues that are associated with fluoride, damage to the brain is probably one of the scariest. There have been at least 23 different studies, conducted in four different countries, showing that even limited exposure to fluoride can lower the IQ of children.

Childrens brains are growing, along with the rest of their body. The damage caused early in life will be difficult to overcome. One particular study suggests that low levels of fluoride can lead to a 5 point reduction in a childs IQ score.

The lowering of IQ scores can have a large impact on the population. This can double the number of children with some level of mental retardation and reduce the number of skilled individuals.

Fluoride Facilitates The Entry Of Aluminum Into The Brain

In the 1970s, autopsies revealed that Alzheimers patients had higher than normal concentrations of neurotoxic aluminum in their brains.

Its now understood that fluoride may play a role in the aluminum-Alzheimers connection.

The blood-brain barrier is a semipermeable membrane designed to keep foreign substances like fluoride and aluminum out of the brain.

When aluminum comes into contact with fluoride, it hitches a ride into the brain as aluminum fluoride, bypassing the blood-brain barrier.

The presence of aluminum fluoride in the brain has been linked to Alzheimers.

In What Forms Is Fluoride Available

You May Have Fluoride Hiding in Your Brain Without Even ...

As mentioned, fluoride is found in foods and in water. It can also be directly applied to the teeth through fluoridated and rinses. Mouth rinses containing fluoride in lower strengths are available over-the-counter; stronger concentrations require a doctor’s prescription.

A dentist in their office can also apply fluoride to the teeth as a gel, foam, or varnish. These treatments contain a much higher level of fluoride than the amount found in toothpastes and mouth rinses. Varnishes are painted on the teeth; foams are put into a mouth guard, which is applied to the teeth for one to four minutes; gels can be painted on or applied via a mouth guard.

Fluoride are also available as liquids and tablets and must be prescribed by your dentist, pediatrician, or family doctor.

    Neurochemical Effects And Mechanisms

A number of studies have examined biochemical changes in the brain associated with fluoride. For example, Guan et al. reported alterations in the phospholipid content of the brain of rats exposed to NaF at 30 or 100 mg/L for 3-7 months. The most prominent changes were found in phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, and phosphatidylserine.

After 7 months of treatment, ubiquinone was clearly elevated, likely due as a compensatory reaction to the increase in free radicals in the brain. Fluoride has been shown to decrease the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase , the consequences being increased free radicals.

NaF injected subcutaneously into rabbits altered brain lipid metabolism and concentrations of protein, free amino acid, and RNA in the brain .

G protein-coupled receptors mediate the release of many neural transmitters including the catecholamines, serotonin, ACh, and the excitatory amino acids. They also are involved in regulating glucagons, vasopressin, neuropeptides, endogenous opioids, prostaglandins, and other important systemic influences on brain and behavior. AlFx is also involved in regulating

    Fluoride Is A Developmental Neurotoxin

As briefly mentioned above, the study in the Lancet recommended that fluoride be classified as a developmental neurotoxin with the likes of lead, mercury, arsenic, PCBs, and toluene 70278-3/fulltext” rel=”nofollow”>1).

As with fluoride, recent and emerging research it rightly puts it among developmental neurotoxins that are capable of causing various brain disorders such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder , learning disabilities, and other cognitive impairments.

Does A Home Water Treatment System Affect The Level Of Fluoride In My Drinking Water

The amount of fluoride you receive in your drinking water depends on the type of home water treatment system used. Steam distillation systems remove 100% of fluoride content. Reverse osmosis systems remove between 65% and 95% of the fluoride. On the other hand, water softeners and charcoal/carbon filters generally do not remove fluoride. One exception: some activated carbon filters contain activated alumina that may remove over 80% of the fluoride.

If you use a home water treatment system, have your water tested at least annually to establish the fluoride level your family is receiving in the treated water. Testing is available through local and state public health departments as well as private laboratories. Also, check with the manufacturer of the product you purchased or read the information that came with the water treatment system to determine the product’s effects on fluoride in your home water.

    Neurotoxicity And Neurobehavioral Effects

This chapter evaluates the effects of fluoride on the nervous system and behavior, with particular emphasis on studies conducted since the earlier NRC review. The human data include epidemiologic studies of populations exposed to different concentrations of fluoride and individual case studies. In addition, laboratory studies of behavioral, biochemical, and neuroanatomical changes induced by fluoride have been reviewed and summarized. At the end of the chapter, conclusions and recommendations for future research are presented.

    Further Research Of Fluoride

Just because there are several limitations associated with research investigating the neurotoxic potential of fluoride does not mean we should assume fluoride is non-toxic.  There is considerable need to conduct studies with robust designs to test fluoride intake at various quantities to determine whether it is causing brain damage and/or killing brain cells.

What Effects Does Fluoride Have On The Brain

Due to fluorides highly reactive nature, once it enters the body it begins to wreak havoc right away.

Through the hundreds of studies conducted on fluorides ability to damage the brain, several different brain effects have been observed from fluoride exposure.

This vast destruction of different parts of the brain, not surprisingly leads to several different health outcomes.

    Fluoride Is Found In Antidepressants

If you are one of the millions of people taking Prozac, you may have noticed that the generic name for Prozac is fluoxetine.

Its not a coincidence that the name sounds a lot like fluoride.

Some of the most commonly prescribed drugs contain significant amounts of fluoride, including antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs.

This is disturbing since theres evidence that fluoride can cause depression and anxiety.

Besides Prozac, other antidepressants that contain fluoride include Paxil, Celexa, and Lexapro.

If you currently take one of these medications, you may want to discuss switching to a fluoride-free antidepressant or try some natural ways to relieve depression instead.

But do not stop taking any medication before talking to your health care professional.

Fluoridated Water Leaches Lead From Pipes And Faucets

If you are of a certain age, you may remember when paint, gasoline, and water pipes regularly contained lead.

Lead is another neurotoxin that posed a serious health threat, leading to a series of bans in the US.

Lead has been banned from paint since 1978, phased out of gasoline in the 1990s, and outlawed in the manufacture of water pipes since 1986.

But if you live in a house built before 1986, you may still have lead water pipes.

Even brass or chrome-plated faucets can contain some lead.

If you have fluoridated water coming through lead pipes and chrome faucets, you have the perfect neurotoxin storm.

Why? Fluoridated water leaches lead and greatly increases the amount in your water, by up to 9-fold.

Young brains are most at risk, but brains of all ages can suffer from lead exposure manifesting as memory loss, mood disorders, lower IQ, and learning disabilities.

Bonus: Get A Reusable And Safe Water Bottle

After completing step 1, you now have clean, fresh, and healthy water.

And youll want to get yourself a water bottle that will keep it that way.

Unfortunately, many people forget this step and drink water from a water bottle that leaks toxic plastic compounds into their filtered water.

Now I will tell you why you should get the bottle I have or something like it:

    • High Quality: there may be other bottles that look better but with the one I have, you will avoid leaks, rusting and toxic materials entering your water. Which makes sense as it was extremely hard to find any bad reviews about it.
    • Big Size: you may be tempted to get a smaller water bottle. But if youre drinking filtered water, you want it to last you long enough while youre at work, the gym or wherever else

    Glucose Metabolism Can Suffer

This could be considered one of the most overlooked dangers of fluoride. Studies have shown that fluoride can adversely affect your blood glucose and insulin levels. Evidence shows that those with higher levels of fluoride in their body had higher glucose levels in the blood and also diminished levels of insulin.

Because of this, many in the scientific community see a correlation between fluoride and diabetes, especially in children. Diabetes occurs when your body has persistently high glucose levels and persistently low levels of produced-insulin. In fact, many doctors will suggest that a diabetic child use a toothpaste with little to no fluoride.

What Are The Health Risks Of Fluoride

While the U.S. Centers of Disease Control proclaimed that the fluoridation of water was one of the greatest achievements in public health of the 20th century, there have been a number of critics of the process.

People began to ponder whether fluoride was really beneficial. For example, how can you adequately predict the dosage that someone will receive, if one person drinks a pint of water from their faucet each day and another person drinks a gallon? The answer is that you cannot monitor or control the dosage at that level.

Recent studies have started pointing out the potential dangers of . Some of the health risks that have been linked to fluoride include an increased risk of cancer, reduction in melatonin production, reduction of thyroid hormones, muscle disorders, arthritis, and even brain damage.

Harmful To Male And Female Fertility

A direct link exists between fertility rates and fluoridated drinking water. Higher levels of fluoride correspond to lower fertility rates, particularly with drinking water levels of 3 ppm. Animal models show that fluoride reduces reproductive hormones in females. Men have it just as bad; those suffering from fluorosis have lower and than men with limited fluoride exposure.

    Fluoride Linked To Adhd

Rates of ADHD skyrocketed in the 1990s, about the same time that fluoridation of water supplies was also on the rise in the United States.

This may not be a coincidence since researchers have found a correlation between water fluoridation and ADHD.

States with the largest number of ADHD cases also have the greatest proportion of people drinking fluoridated water.

A single supplement for better thinking, mental energy, productivity, and mood

According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 67% of the US population receives fluoridated water but the numbers vary greatly by state.

If you live in Washington DC, the chances of fluoridated water coming out of your tap are 100%.

States with the lowest levels of fluoridated water are Montana at 32% and Hawaii at 10%.

Fluoride And Iq What Is The Link What This Study Says

A study just published in JAMA Pediatrics found an association between mothers drinking fluoridated… water during pregnancy and the child’s subsequent IQ scores.

    Getty

Many communities have long put fluoride in drinking water to prevent tooth decay. But if you Google “fluoride makes you dumb,” you’ll get plenty of sites advancing unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about how the government is putting fluoride in the water to keep people dumb and docile. Actually, Googling anything such as books or broccoli and “makes you dumb” can return conspiracy theories.

But separate from conspiracy theories, do claims that fluoride exposure may affect intelligence have any teeth? Brace yourself for the aftermath of a study just published in JAMA Pediatrics. The study found that mothers who had consumed fluoridated tap water while they were pregnant tended to give birth to children who ended up having slightly lower IQ scores by ages 3 to 4. Anyone who knows the drill will realize that fluoride conspiracy theorists will take this study and run with these results for, well, forever.

Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to better understand the relationship between putting fluoride in water and potential health effects. Before you try to decide whether you like your teeth or your brain better, let’s take a closer look at this study.

Is drinking bottled water safer than drinking tap water? Not necessarily.

    A Look At The Research

What Does Fluoride Do To The Brain?

Guided imagery is a behavioral technique using a series of verbal suggestions to guide oneself or others in visualizing an image in the mind to bring a desired response in the way of a reduction in stress, anxiety, or pain. A growing list of empirical literature supports the use of these techniques in various physical and emotional conditions. Guided imagery resulted in a and related symptoms in a returning, combat-exposed active-duty military population. Positive affirmations can positively affect the brains circuitry. There is MRI evidence suggesting that specific neural pathways are increased when people practice self-affirmation tasks.

Numerous research articles have established that bilateral stimulation is one of the most effective treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder . Some therapists practice Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing , a combination of psychotherapy and bilateral stimulation. EMDR is very effective for treating a wide range of mental health issues due to emotional and physical trauma. During bilateral stimulation, patients tend to process the memory in a way that leads to a peaceful resolution. And, often results in increased insight regarding both previously disturbing events and long-held negative thoughts about the self.

Why Should I Detox My Body Of Fluoride

Its no secret that your health is the foundation of your life.

    Everything depends on it.

How well we can perform at work, how well we can be parents to our children and in general, how much we can enjoy life all depends on how healthy we are.

For example, take a second to think how much you enjoy life when you have a pounding headache or while your lower back is hurting

    I know, I dont.

The reason I mention this is because you want to build your health on a solid foundation.

You especially dont want to be like the guy from the Bible, who build his house on sand and eventually had a storm wash his house away.

However, by exposing yourself to fluoride everyday, youre building your health on a weak foundation.

Now with fluorides cumulative nature, more and more of it will accumulate in your body making it a matter of when not if fluoride affects your health.

While on the contrary, eliminating fluoride exposure will help you build and keep your health on a strong foundation.

Where Hydrogen Fluoride Is Found And How It Is Used

    • Hydrogen fluoride is used to make refrigerants, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, high-octane gasoline, aluminum, plastics, electrical components, and fluorescent light bulbs. Sixty percent of the hydrogen fluoride used in manufacturing is for processes to make refrigerants.
    • Hydrogen fluoride is also used for etching glass and metal.

Does Fluoride In Drinking Water Hurt Your Brain

Back in 2011, the EPA reversed course and lowered the recommended maximum amount of fluoride in drinking water due to data that the levels then being allowed put kids at risk of dental fluorosis–streaking and pitting of teeth due to excessive fluoride, which also puts tooth enamel at risk.

This conclusion was a discordant note amidst all the accolades fluoride had won, starting with the discovery during the 1940s that people who lived near water supplies containing naturally occurring fluoride had fewer cavities in their teeth.   A massive push ensued, with government and industry encouraging cities and towns to add fluoride to water supplies.

Related: Dental health linked to dementia risk

Now, questions about the impact of fluoride on mental health are growing and can no longer be ignored.

A recently published Harvard study showed that children living in areas with highly fluoridated water have “significantly lower” IQ scores than those living in areas where the water has low fluoride levels.  In fact, the study analyzed the results of 27 prior investigations and found the following, among other conclusions:

      * Fluoride may be a developmental neurotoxicant that affects brain development at exposures much below those that cause toxicity in adults.

      * Rats exposed to fluoride concentrations in water showed cellular changes in the brain and increased levels of aluminum in brain tissue.

Benefits Of Fluoride In Drinking Water

Proponents of water fluoridation consider benefits significant.  These benefits of fluoridation include: cavity reduction, prevention of tooth decay, possible reversal of decay, and minimizing dental inequality between those of low and high socioeconomic status.  It is unclear as to whether the benefits are as significant as suggested.

      • Cavity reduction: Fluoridation of water is considered an effective way to prevent cavities in people of all ages . Some studies have suggested that fluoridation of water reduced cavity rates by up to 50% in children and 27% in adults.  Whether the cavity reduction rates as a result of fluoridation are as high as claimed is up for debate.
      • Dental care replacement: For individuals who fail to see a dentist regularly , fluoridation of drinking water may be preserving dental health. In the United States, regular dental checkups are not mandatory and as a result many people dont go to the dentist.  Drinking water with 0.7 ppm fluoride may be preventing tooth decay and cavity formation.
      • Equality of oral health: Many speculate that fluoridation of water minimizes inequalities in dental health between individuals from wealthy and poor families. That said, the quality of these studies is questionable.  Some believe that significant inequalities in dental care are prevalent regardless of water fluoridation.  Proponents of fluoridation are quick to highlight the fact that its addition could minimize oral health inequalities.

Decreased Iq And Cognitive Impairment In Children

-A multitude of published studies support that fluoride can harm the developing brain of children. In 2012, Harvard published a meta-analysis of 27 different fluoride studies, and found that fluoride exposure was associated with reduced IQ in children.

-A recent meta-analysis published in 2018 found that greater exposure of children to high levels of fluoride in water was significantly associated with reduced levels of intelligence in children.

-A review published in the Lancet concluded that fluoride is a neurotoxin that damages the developing brain, thus increasing the risk of autism, developmental delay, ADHD, and learning disabilities.

      Fluorides Effects On Human Brains

There are several human studies attempting to investigate fluorides effects on the brain.  There is some evidence to suggest that high fluoride exposure may be neurotoxic.  Some studies suggest that fluoride exposure has deleterious effects on the neurodevelopment of children.

In fact, some researchers have gone as far as to imply that high fluoride exposure may lower intelligence by up to 7 IQ points.  Understand that there are several limitations associated with the research of fluorides effect on human brains.  Despite limitations associated with the research, the findings in the studies listed below warrant further investigation.

2015: Previous evidence suggests that fluoride can impair neurodevelopment of children.  It is hypothesized that fluoridation of water promotes neurotoxicity within the brain, which can detrimentally affect neurodevelopment.  For this study, researchers recruited a total of 51 first-graders living in China.

Researchers initially measured fluoride concentrations within urine after a night with no exposure.  They also measured levels of fluoride within well-water and documented past fluoride exposure .  In addition, an array of neurodevelopment tests were administered to the children including the Wide Range Assessment of Memory, Learning and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children , a finger tapping and grooved pegboard test.

Immediate Signs And Symptoms Of Exposure To Hydrogen Fluoride

              Fluoride Action Network

              • Swallowing only a small amount of highly concentrated hydrogen fluoride will affect major internal organs and may be fatal.
              • Hydrogen fluoride gas, even at low levels, can irritate the eyes, nose, and respiratory tract. Breathing in hydrogen fluoride at high levels or in combination with skin contact can cause death from an irregular heartbeat or from fluid buildup in the lungs.
              • Even small splashes of high-concentration hydrogen fluoride products on the skin can be fatal. Skin contact with hydrogen fluoride may not cause immediate pain or visible skin damage.
              • Often, patients exposed to low concentrations of hydrogen fluoride on the skin do not show effects or experience pain immediately. And, severe pain at the exposure site may be the only symptom for several hours. Visible damage may not appear until 12 to 24 hours after the exposure.
              • Depending on the concentration of the chemical and the length of time of exposure, skin contact with hydrogen fluoride may cause severe pain at the point of contact; a rash; and deep, slow-healing burns. Severe pain can occur even if no burns can be seen.
              • Showing these signs and symptoms does not necessarily mean that a person has been exposed to hydrogen fluoride. Other chemicals also can cause these effects.
              • Exposure to hydrogen fluoride can result in severe electrolyte problems.
