Right Cerebral Hemisphere: The Creative Side Of The Brain

ARE YOU LEFT OR RIGHT BRAIN DOMINANT? | KNOW YOUR PERSONALITY

One of the traits associated with workplace success is creativity as it is linked to innovation.

In fact, the right hemisphere of the brain controls creativity, imagination, and intuition, giving you the ability to visualize and interpret reality. It helps people to look at the bigger picture so they can better assess problems and come up with innovative strategies to solve them.

Moreover, the right side of the brain contributes to emotional intelligence the ability to understand ourselves and be empathetic towards others.

Those who develop emotional intelligence are able to master interpersonal relationships, a vital skill for managers.

What Is Right And Left Brain Dominance

Supposedly, the right part of your brain deals with creative and emotional things while the left part of your brain deals with making rational decisions and analyzing events, problems and situations. According to the meme, the colors you see in the photo depend on whichever side of your brain you use more.

However, right and left brain dominance might not actually even be a real thing. Some scientists say there is no evidence to support that this phenomenon exists.

Imagine! Something on Twitter not being true.

While many Twitter users are quick to say that they’re seeing blue and gray because they’re left-brain dominant , shoe pic truthers are out there, not blaming brains but rather blaming the photo’s photographer .

Many responses were about the white balance of the photo being off.

“Just jumping in here before this takes off: it’s not a left brained right brained thing. It’s whether or not you’re subconsciously compensating for the bad white balance of the photo. the pixels themselves are grey and teal, the shoe is pink and white,” responded Twitter user KylePlantEmoji to Lizzo.

“I saw grey and teal first, but when I turned the brightness down on my phone I saw pink and white. Science!” tweeted mother_fickle to the performer.

How To Use This Information To Help Your Child

If a child has a strong left brain and a less mature right brain, he may experience social difficulties and have little interest in sports or outdoor activities. This imbalance in skills can be tough on kids and parents.

It was once thought that the brain was static, unable to grow or change. But extensive research has shown that the brain remarkably adaptable, able to create new neural pathways in response to stimulus in the environment. This is a branch of science called neuroplasticity.

What Does It Mean To Be A Left

It is believed that people are generally inclined towards thinking one way over the other. If youre analytical and methodical, youre a left-brained person. If youre creative and artistic, youre a right-brained person.

Compared to a right-brained person, a person with left brain characteristics is more verbal, analytical, and orderly.

In reality, both sides of the brain work in unison and are in constant communication. This means that most people not entirely left-brain or right-brain oriented. Still, in some people, one of the sides can be more dominant than the other.

What Are The Differences Between The Left Brain And Right Brain

Are you right brain or left brain dominant?

Many neuroscientists consider the concept of purely left-brain vs right-brain characteristics a myth. There are numerous theories and concepts that exist to explain how the right and left hemispheres of the human brain function. Many of which, have merits, and limitations.

Researchers Michael Gazzaniga and Roger Sperry proposed the concept of lateralization. In lateralization the left hemisphere and right hemispheres of the brain have very different functions, but they communicate with each other through their physical connections. An example of lateralization is language. For most people language function is located in the left hemisphere of the brain, particularly for right-handed people. The foundation for this split-brain theory often is based on research that has been performed on patients who had their right and left hemispheres of their brain surgically disconnected to treat severe epilepsy. Split-brain theory describes the left side of the brain as giving rational orders to the right side of the brain, and the right hemisphere as giving emotionally based commands.

Brain lateralization occurs in certain brain functions. In brain lateralization, certain regions of the brain perform specific functions. Many recent studies have shown that the right and left halves of the brain mostly are used equally, which shows the functional and physical connections between both the right and left hemispheres of the brain.

Hemispheric Dominance And Brain Symmetry

Brain symmetry is an important aspect when it comes to hemispheric dominance. When something is said to be symmetrical, it means it is made up of the same parts. And those parts face each other on the same axis or plane .

People who are neither left- nor right-brained are said to have a symmetrical brainsuch as Einstein. On the other hand, people with one hemisphere dominant over the other are said to have an asymmetric brain. Even though their brain anatomy does include two hemispheres facing each other, they are considerably different regarding their functions.

Color Test Left Brain Right Brain

Perhaps you’re familiar with the left brain right brain color test where you try to figure out what color is the sneaker or what color is the dress? Even though they are very popular on socials as supposedly being left brain right brain quizzes, there isnt any scientific research to actually back it up.

Since were at it, we would like to explain the What color is the sneaker? and What color is the dress? phenomena.

You must have seen both these pictures as a left brain right brain color test however, neither of them has anything to do with evaluating the brain dominancy in individuals. So, what is their secret that aroused peoples curiosity?

The only trick within these photos is about lighting and how our brain adjusts to it. In the picture with the sneaker, the color of the mans hand and thumb may trick some minds into seeing the sneaker differently than others when it is actually pink and white.

The same situation applies to the dress. In fact, it is more obvious because the picture that was circling around is very blurry, forcing the mind to correct it. As the mind tries to adjust the lighting of the picture, the reflection of the colors tricks people into thinking that the dress is white and gold colored, as truly it is blue and black.

Mind tricks are not new and the deception of the mind caused by colors has many different explanations however, none of them are associated with the brain dominancy of the brain.

Brain Lateralisation And Handedness

Left and Right Brain Dominance

It is true, however, that the brains right hemisphere controls the left side of the body, and the left hemisphere the right side and that the hemispheres do actually have specialities. For example, language is usually processed a little bit more within the left hemisphere, and recognition of faces a little bit more within the right hemisphere. This idea that each hemisphere is specialised for some skills is known as brain lateralisation. However, the halves do not work in isolation, as a thick band of nerve fibres called the corpus callosum connects the two sides.

Interestingly, there are some known differences in these specialities between right-handers and left-handers. For example, it is often cited that around 95% of right-handers are left hemisphere dominant. This is not the same as the left brain claim above, it actually refers to the early finding that most right-handers depend more on the left hemisphere for speech and language. It was assumed that the opposite would be true for lefties. But this is not the case. In fact, 70% of left-handers also process language more in the left hemisphere. Why this number is lower, rather than reversed, is as yet unknown.

Mixing Fact With Fiction

Its true each hemisphere of the brain controls different functions, but this fact doesnt relate to personality. The misleading idea of left vs. right brained people originates from science and has become fictionalized over time.

Take TheStrange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, for example. Robert Louis Stevensons fictional characters represented the duality of human nature and explored the idea of a logical left brain competing with an emotional right brain .

People love to learn about their own psychology, and they crave definitive answers. We love classification schemes like astrology, Myers-Briggs and endless personality quizzes, even though, according to Inc., calling yourself left brained or right brained is totally meaningless.

Are There Really Right

verifiedThe Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica

Are you a logical, precise thinker, or would you say that youre more free-spirited and artistic? If youre the former, somebodys probably told you at some point that youre a left-brained person, and if youre the latter, right-brained. The notion that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical half and that our individual traits are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. Theres even a small industry devoted to this idea. There are self-help books, personality tests, therapies, and educational materials that claim to help you optimize the functions of the stronger half of your brain, get in touch with the weaker half, or even make the two halves stop their incessant battling inside your skull so you can finally get some peace and quiet.

How To Develop This Side Of The Brain

Left-brained people often exhibit logical-mathematical intelligence, which is one of the nine intelligences defined by Howard Gardners theory of multiple intelligences. This enables them to be excellent mathematicians, scientists, and technicians.

Everyone possesses this type of intelligence to a certain extent. But people with left brain characteristics can especially benefit from improving it. They can gain a better understanding of logic by solving mathematical problems and immersing themselves in novel situations.

They can also benefit from spending time with friends who are interested in math and science. Their logical thinking will naturally improve.

We need to know how our minds work so we can work our minds better.

Left Brain vs. Right Brain: Whatâs the Difference?

Theleftbrainedrightbrainedmeaningbraindominantyou’reyouryou’releftbrainedyou’rerightbrained

Right-brained people are said to be more:

  • creative.
  • able to see the big picture.
  • intuitive.
  • likely to visualize more than think in words.

Furthermore, what percentage of the population is right brain dominant? More than 160,000 Americans used our brain test. The results showed that 37 percent of Americans are leftbrained, while only 29 percent are rightbrained. In 34 percent of participants, the two hemispheres exert equal influence on decision-making.

Likewise, people ask, how do I know if I am right brain dominant?

  • You Prefer Drawing to Writing.
  • You Prefer Open-Ended Questions to Multiple Choice.
  • You Tend To Be Disorganized.
  • You Have Difficulty Focusing for Long Periods of Time.
  • You Have Less Than Average Memorization Skills.
  • You Are a Holistic Thinker.
  • You Can Be Spontaneous And Intuitive.
  • Can you be both left and right brained?

We all ARE both leftbrained and rightbrained. People who have both cerebral hemispheres use both cerebral hemispheres. The scientific discovery that certain functions are done best by one hemisphere or the other has been mistranslated in popular culture.

If youre like me, you learned that about 90% of people are right-handed and much of the reason is genetic. And thats true, although it remains a mystery why our genetic evolution led to so many more righties than lefties.

But for certain tasks, handedness can be “overcome.” For example, right-handed kids learning to play tennis, golf, or baseball can become successful hitting from “the other side.” It may be more a matter of how they are taught and what gets reinforced than about a hard-wired preference for one hand or the other.

According to recent research, the idea of people being “left-brained” or “right-brained” may also be less fixed than wed thought.

    The Advantages Of Left Eye

Hand dominance plays a key role in gross and fine motor development, but it’s unclear whether there’s a true link between hand dominance and eye, or ocular, dominance 1. The correlation between hand dominance and eye dominance appears to occur in most cases and is strengthened over time due to use, but many right-handed people find they have developed a cross-dominance, or a proclivity to use their left eye to position objects. When training for sports or recreational activities that require sharp vision and exacting hand-to-eye coordination, there may be some advantages to cross-dominance.

What Is The Personality Of A Left

Left-brained people prefer cold-hard facts and real-life data rather than emotions and imagination. Their systematic and stable personalities make them good candidates as reliable team leaders. They often pace themselves and do not overreact quickly.

When it comes to daily life, left-brain personalities approach it the same way they approach their professional or academic obligations. They strive to be as clear and direct as possible. Left-brain people like order and organize their daily plans as neatly and systematically as possible.

They remember events chronologically, usually in great detail, and approach every potential risk with necessary caution. When facing problems, they immediately try to find the most efficient solutions, and they are not easily distracted by their emotions.

An example of a left-brained is when they watch a movie, they analyze it from a technical point of view. They evaluate the quality of a script as well as how good or bad the directing is.

What Defines Left And Right Brained People

Do People Really Have Right or Left Brain Personalities?
    • Resources

The human brain is the command centre of our bodies. It contains roughly 86 billion nerve cells, can generate up to 50,000 thoughts per day, and it can process information faster than a Formula One car can travel!

“Brain information can travel up to 268 mph!”

On top of all of this, it is widely believed that the structure of our brain plays a key role in shaping the different characteristics of our personalities.

Your brain has two sides, which are known as hemispheres. The left hemisphere controls the right side of your body, dealing with logical thought and linguistic functions. The right hemisphere controls the left side of your body, dealing with things such as our imagination, spacial orientation and intuition.

Extensive research into the two sides of the brain is what inspired Neuropsychologist, Roger W Sperry to develop his left brain/right brain theory.

Sperry developed the left brain/right brain theory in 1960. He believed that each human brain is either right or left side dominant. Each side of the brain controls different types of thinking and therefore different personality traits. He believed that some individuals utilise both sides of their brains equally, but most people have a tendency to think in either a more left or right brain way.

Bonus Advice: Integrate The 4 Building Blocks Of Productivity

Just as important to productivity planners as the tool are the principles that we create inside of. There are 4 building blocks of productivity, that when embraced, accelerate your energy and results.

The four building blocks of productivity are desire, strategy, focus and rhythm. When you get these right, having a productivity planner or journal provides the structure to keep you on track.

    Block #1: Desire

Somehow in the pursuit of all our goals, we accumulate ideas and To-Dos were not actually passionate about and dont really want to pursue. They sneak their way in and steal our focus from the things that really matter.

Underneath powerful productivity is desire. Not many little desires, but the overarching mother of desires. The desire you feel in your gut, the desire that comes from your soul, not your logic, is what you need to tap into if you want to level up your productivity.

A productivity planner is just a distraction if youre not clear on what its all for. With desire, however, your productivity planner provides the guide rails to accomplish your intentions.

    Block #2: Strategy

Once youre clear on your overarching desire, you need to organize your steps to get there. Lets call this strategy. Strategy is like assembling a jigsaw puzzle. You must first turn over all the pieces to see patterns, colors, connections and find borders.
