Heartbeat Inside Your Head: Aneurysm

Feeling the pulse from within the head is unusual, and most often is caused by any condition that increases the force of heart beating, such as with anxiety or exertion, says Morton Tavel, MD, Clinical Professor Emeritus of Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine, and author of HEALTH TIPS, MYTHS, AND TRICKS: A Physicians Advice.

During periods of quiet, as seen when one is resting quietly in bed awaiting sleep, even a normal pulse can be felt, especially if the head is resting with the ear on the pillow, continues Dr. Tavel.

In this latter case, even the minor head motion caused by the pulse can be heard.

How Can I Feel Better

Most headaches will go away if a person rests or sleeps. When you get a headache, lie down in a cool, dark, quiet room and close your eyes. It may help to put a cool, moist cloth across your forehead or eyes. Relax. Breathe easily and deeply.

If a headache doesn’t go away or it’s really bad, you may want to take an over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. You can buy these in drugstores under various brand names, and your drugstore may carry its own generic brand. It’s a good idea to avoid taking aspirin for a headache because it may cause a rare but dangerous disease called Reye syndrome.

If you are taking over-the-counter pain medicines more than twice a week for headaches, or if you find these medicines are not working for you, talk to your doctor.

Most headaches are not a sign that something more is wrong. But if your headaches are intense and happen often, there are lots of things a doctor can do, from recommending changes in your diet to prescribing medicine. You don’t have to put up with the pain!

New Research Reveals The Fearsome Impact Of Humiliation

Being told youre wrong when you’re wrong may make you a more knowledgeable person, but not necessarily a happier one. Even if youre not the kind of person who needs to have the last word in a debate, you may still feel a sting when someone else points out your errors. The pain can be particularly sharp if youve got an audiencereminding you perhaps of stumbling over a new word while reading aloud to your fellow third graders, being shown to be incorrect when others are in earshot can make you feel embarrassed and humiliated.

Even some of our closest friends and loved ones can be brutal and insensitive when faced with our errors. They gleefully point out your mistake in pronouncing a difficult word or shout, I told you so! to anyone within earshot. Depending on the thickness of your skin, you may dismiss the entire episode, but it’s more likely you’ll retreat sulkily into the corner, wishing you could just disappear altogether. Culture also plays a role in determining peoples responses to humiliation: In some societies, saving face is valued above all else, and to be proven wrong constitutes a significant violation.

Humiliation is defined as the emotion you feel when your status is lowered in front of others. You may feel annoyed with yourself when you make a mistake or fail to know an answer, but unless others are around to witness it, thats all youll feel. You generally need someone else on hand in order to feel humiliated by mistakes.

The Patient Cant Breathe On Their Own

One major telltale sign of brain death is that the mechanism in the brain that keeps you breathing when youre not conscious wont kick in. That means to get a diagnosis of brain death, doctors will often see if a patient can breathe unassisted, notes the National Kidney Foundation.

During the tests to determine brain dead status, the patient is placed on a ventilator and may be given medications to maintain blood pressure and other bodily functions. During the brain death testing, the ventilator and medications continue but they do not affect the results of the testing, it notes.

  • When To See A Doctor

In the case of non-emergency headaches, you should make an appointment to see a doctor if youre experiencing a change in the frequency or severity of your headaches. Having a headache that lasts more than 2 days or having more than 15 headaches in a month are also reasons to speak with a doctor.

You may also want to visit your doctor if the headache is sudden and severe, wakes you up at night, or gets increasingly worse. You might be referred to a headache specialist.

    Medical emergency

In rare cases, headaches can be an emergency symptom. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you experience a headache following a trauma, or have a headache along with any of the following symptoms:

    • fever

There are a few ways to relieve headaches quickly:

    • apply a warm compress to the back of the neck
    • take a warm shower
    • improve your posture to relieve tension from the head, neck, and shoulders
    • leave the room and go to a new environment, especially if lights, sounds, or smells are causing the headache or eye strain
    • take a quick nap, which can help relieve headaches caused by fatigue
    • loosen your hair if its up in a ponytail, braid, or bun
    • drink more water to avoid dehydration

A doctor will conduct a physical exam, and ask about your medical history and the symptoms you are experiencing.

You can prepare for this by having answers to the following:

A doctor may also run different tests to give you a definitive diagnosis. The tests they may run include:

Can You Recover From Brain Death

No, a patient who is brain dead will not be able to recover. The body may continue to breathe with mechanical support but eventually, both the breathing and heart will stop even with continued support.

Being brain dead is not the same as being in a coma or a prolonged vegetative state. The latter two are medical states where one may be unconscious but still show brain function.

The media and Hollywood often use these terms interchangeably. But both medically and legally, brain death is its own distinguishable diagnosis that one cannot recover from.

How To Cope With The Pain Of Rejection

How Can Our Heads Ache When Our Brain Has No Pain ...

Turning the tables, how can you manage your own feelings of humiliation when someone else proves you wrong? Elsewhere, Ive discussed how to handle criticism. Dealing with humiliation is similar, but because it is an emotional state, it is particularly important for you to manage your negative feelings.

As with all emotions, handling humiliation depends on how you construe the situation. According tocognitive theories of emotion, the way you feel is a direct function of the way you think. Hamlet said it best: There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so. If your skin isnt that thick, and you hate being shown wrong in front of others, you might benefit from taking a look at the thoughts you feel while in the situation. If humiliation is an emotion that follows from feeling loss of status, perhaps you should redefine the situation to de-emphasize the status piece of the equation.

In either case, if you feel justifiably aggrieved, there are ways you can seek recourse: If it’s an innocent misunderstanding between friends, take a page from the kinder-and-gentler playbook and speak to the person privately, with just the two of you present. If your rights are truly being violated, though, you may need to take the problem to others who can help rectify the situation.

Ways To Spot A Brain Aneurysm Before It’s Too Late

    These things are straight-up terrifying.

Here’s a stat that’s sure to keep you up at night: Currently, anywhere from three to five million people in the U.S. are walking around with brain aneurysms, according to the American Stroke Association.

If you’re thinking “what the heck is a brain aneurysm?” it’s basically a blood vessel in your brain that’s on the verge of an explosion. Put simply, its a weakness that starts to occur in a blood vessel inside the brain or right outside it, says David Putrino, Ph.D., director of rehabilitation innovation at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. As blood flows through this vessel in the brain, the weak point starts to bulge out like a balloon, and it looks like a berry hanging off a branch.

Luckily, most aneurysms dont ever rupture or cause any symptoms. But when they do, things get really serious, really fast. According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, about 40 percent of ruptured brain aneurysms lead to death. Others can cause severe brain damage and neurological problems if not treated immediately. Time is the most important factor in terms of surviving and having less neurological damage from a rupture, says Putrino.

Here are the brain aneurysm symptoms you need to know about so you can act quickly and keep yourself healthy.

Responsibilities Of Physicians Determining Brain Death

The diagnosis of brain death is primarily clinical. No other tests are required if the full clinical examination, including each of two assessments of brain stem reflexes and a single apnoea test, is conclusively performed. In the absence of either complete clinical findings consistent with brain death, or confirmatory tests demonstrating brain death, brain death cannot be diagnosed and certified. These guidelines apply to patients one year of age or older.

Treating Sharp Pains In The Head

Given the different causes of headaches, there is no singular treatment. The treatment for a brain tumor is going to be dramatically different from the treatment for a stroke or giant cell arteritis . For headaches or migraines, the treatment options tend to be more limited and consist of minimizing aggravating factors and taking painkiller medication if it helps, which doesnt always happen. More specific treatment options may be possible depending on individual circumstances, which is why its always important to talk to your doctor about these matters. They will be most familiar with your medical circumstances and personal needs and can help you find an effective treatment.

What Do Headaches Caused By Brain Tumors Feel Like

Every patient’s pain experience is unique, but headaches associated with brain tumors tend to be constant and are worse at night or in the early morning. They are often described as dull, “pressure-type” headaches, though some patients also experience sharp or “stabbing” pain. They can be localized to a specific area or generalized. They can be made worse with coughing, sneezing or straining. A headache caused by a tumor may respond to over-the-counter medications early in treatment but may become more resistant to medication over time.

The brain itself does not have any pain receptors, but there are several mechanisms that explain why brain tumors cause headaches. The most basic is that a tumor can raise your intracranial pressure and cause stretching of the durathe covering of the brain and spinal cord. This can be painful, because the dura has sensory nerve endings.

“The skull is basically a sphere with a set amount of tissue inside it. Adding more tissue raises the pressure inside the sphere because the skull cannot expand to accommodate it, says Dr. Lipinski.

Also, tumors sometimes can occur in locations that block the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluidthe fluid created in the brain that coats and cushions the brain and spinal cord. The increased fluid can also increase the intracranial pressure, says Dr. Lipinski.

    See Rashes On Eyelids

If your musculoskeletal pain comes bundled with eyelid rashes, you could be in the grips of dermatomyositis. This is an autoimmune disease that causes general aching because it inflames the blood vessels beneath your skin. It can make it hard to swallow, and to stand up from a seated position. Common symptoms include fatigue and rashes. These can be red or purple, and they tend to itch. And they don’t just appear on eyelids dermatomyositis rashes may appear on cheeks, elbows, knees, knuckles, the back, or the upper chest.

Your doctor might prescribe medications like corticosteroids to control the symptoms. There are exercises that can be learned to keep your strength and flexibility up as well, and therapies to control the swallowing problems that can result from this disease. Purified blood products can be offered as injections, and these can stop the damage to your muscles and skin for a time. But they need to be administered regularly and they are expensive.

Burning The Midnight Oil A Little Too Much

We all need sleep. Theres no getting around it. We can fight it all we want, but eventually, sleep will find us. Fortunately, sleep is a good thing it helps us form new memories and learn through the creation of pathways in the brain. Sleep also helps remove toxins that build up in our brains while we are awake. Adults need seven to nine hours of sleep on average.

Unfortunately, the demands of life step in and make sleep seem not that important. We have some great party to attend, a school project to finish, or a virtual opponent to crush in some video game. We can just catch up on sleep later, right? If we get a few hours, then well have a tough day tomorrow, but itll all get fixed tomorrow night.

Sadly, thats not really the case. This lack of sleep can cause lasting harm to the brain. Every night that sleep is avoided is another night that the brain wont effectively form new memories and store needed information. Depression can start to form, which may further feed insomnia. Lack of sleep can also increase appetite, which can lead people to eat more foods and develop obesity.

Do I Need To Have My Eyes Checked If My Head Hurts

If You Get One Of These 4 Headaches, Eliminate The Pain ...

A red eye typically warrants immediate eye examinationat least the first time. Eye pain or headache with a normal external appearing eye nearly always has another answer than the eye itself when anyone seeks medical attention. The eyes deserve an exam to evaluate the nerves in the eyes and the optic discs when headache or eye pain is present. This is to eliminate increased pressure in the head and/or eye as a cause.

Many people will begin their quest for trying to find the cause for their headaches by seeking medical care with the ophthalmologist or optometrist. In fact, most eye pain does not result from an eye problem. Pain in and around the eye usually reflects referred pain from headache. Referred pain is pain that radiates from its originating location to another site. There are a few eye conditions that are important to consider.
