How does your brain take information from the outside world and cache it for later retrieval? Where are your brains storage vaults, what do they look like and how do they work?
Does Brain Size Matter
Obviously, not all people have the same size brain. Some are larger, and some are smaller. You might find yourself wondering if brain size might be linked to characteristics such as disability or intelligence.
Researchers have found that in some cases brain size can be linked to certain diseases or developmental conditions.
For example, autistic children tend to have bigger brains than non-autistic children. The hippocampus tends to be smaller in elderly adults suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. This area of the brain is strongly associated with memory.
What about intelligence? The answer to that question depends largely upon who you ask. According to one analysis of many studies that looked at this issue by Michael McDaniel of Virginia Commonwealth University, bigger brains were correlated with higher intelligence.
Not all researchers necessarily agree with McDaniel’s conclusions. Such studies also raise important questions about how we define and measure intelligence, whether we should account for relative body size when making such correlations, and what parts of the brain we should be looking at when making such determinations.
It is also important to note that when looking at individual differences among people, brain size variations are relatively small. How Do Brains Change With Age
As we age, parts of our brain begin to shrink naturally and we begin to gradually lose neurons. The frontal lobe and the hippocampus two key brain regions in regulating cognitive processes, including memory formation and recall start shrinking when we hit 60 or 70.
This means that we could naturally begin to find learning new things, or performing several tasks at the same time, more challenging than before.
There is some good news, as well, however. Till not too long ago, scientists used to believe that once we started to lose neurons, that would be it we would be unable to create new brain cells and had to resign ourselves to that.
However, it turns out that this isnt true. Researcher Sandrine Thuret, from Kings College London in the United Kingdom, has explained that the hippocampus is a crucial part in the adult brain in terms of generating new cells.
The process in which new nerve cells are created in the adult brain is called neurogenesis, and, according to Thuret, estimates suggest that an average adult human will produce 700 new neurons per day in the hippocampus.
This, she suggests, means that when we reach middle age, we will have replaced all the neurons that we had in this brain region in the beginning of our lives with ones that we produced during adulthood.
