Problems With Facial Recognition

Do People Really Have Right or Left Brain Personalities?

Brain damage to the right side of the brain can lead to an inability to recognize the faces of familiar people or loved ones. If you have this condition, looking at the face of your best friend can feel like looking at a stranger.

Prosopagnosia is caused by lesions to the fusiform facearea located on the inferior temporal cortex.

Some patients with prosopagnosia can still recognize facialexpressions and cues, but some with more severe agnosia cannot. For example, they would not know that a smile means the person is happy, etc.

However, prosopagnosia does not make you forget a person or mean you have no way of identifying them. For example, a TBI patient with this condition can still recognize their husband or wifes voice and remember who they are.

Prosopagnosia is one of the many types of agnosia a person can experience after TBI.

/7breathe Through Your Left Nostril

Some studies suggest that breathing through your left nostril can also help to activate your right brain. The technique sounds a little strange, but there is no harm in trying it. So, close your right nostril with your index finger, breathe in from your left nostril and then breathe out from the right nostril.

Memory And Orientation Problems

Right hemisphere brain damage can also lead to problems remembering new and old information, as well as difficulties recalling the date, time, or place.

Several brain regions are involved in the processes of memory and new learning, and damage to any of these areas can cause memory problems. Some of the main areas of the brain that are in charge of memory include the:

Damage to the right side of any of these structures can lead to memory problems, which explains why right hemisphere injuries often cause memory loss.

Your Brain On Writing

We are lucky to live in an age of technology, invention, and discovery. Scientists yearn to understand how the world works and how the people who inhabit the world operate. They run tests and conduct studies until they find evidence that satisfies them.

Enter Martin Lotze of the University of Greifswald in Germany.

Lotze had done multiple studies on artists brains, but never writers, because of the intricacies of the available technology.

To pull off this study, Lotze had to find a way to take a brain scan more specifically an fMRI while his subjects were writing. This would require that their heads be in a gigantic, magnetized device, with limited movement, and it would require that they see what they are writing. See the challenge?

Lotze found a way to use a series of mirrors attached to the machine that would allow the subjects to see their writing without having to move their head around. Then, all Lotze needed were volunteers.

To gather a control level for his subjects brain waves while writing by hand, he had his 28 writers copy an excerpt. After the baseline brain activity was gathered, he had the subjects brainstorm and write a short story for three minutes.

According to the research, some areas of the brain became more active when the writers were asked to come up with their own stories rather than just copy text.

Before And After Drawings

Left side vs. right side of brain

Below are some examples of drawings by the same people before and after they practiced the exercises to encourage the use of the right side of their brain. The level of improvement is incredible.

With a little practice and devoting some time to these exercises, you will soon be turning out professional looking drawings. Or maybe even paintings like the one below.

Tips For Boosting Creativity

If youre trying to nourish your creative side, here are a few ways to get started:

Read about and listen to the creative ideas of others. You might discover the seed of an idea you can grow, or set your own imagination free.

Try something new. Take up a creative hobby, such as playing an instrument, drawing, or storytelling. A relaxing hobby can help your mind wander to new places.

Look within. This can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and what makes you tick. Why do you gravitate toward certain activities and not others?

Keep it fresh. Break your set patterns and go outside your comfort zone. Take a trip to a place youve never been. Immerse yourself in another culture. Take a course in a subject you havent studied before.

Even something as creative as music takes time, patience, and practice. The more you practice any new activity, the more your brain adapts to the new information.

How To Diagnose The Cause Of Pain In Right Side Of Head

Check Which Side of Your Brain Dominants

Most headaches are diagnosed via relatively old methods of diagnosis, such as medical history examination and a full-body physical. New testing methods, such as MRIsor CT scans will often give no indication of a problem when testing for most types of headaches. These testing methods may prove useful in detecting underlying conditions that may be causing headaches.

The Processing Activity Of Both Brain Hemispheres

The right side of the brain looks at the whole first before it breaks things down into parts. It is also random. A right-brained person is more likely to move from one task to the other completing the same amount of work done by a left-brained person but without paying attention to priorities. The right side likes everything to be concrete. It likes to be able to see, feel or touch the real object. It also likes context. Right-brained people are said to know what they mean but often have trouble in verbally expressing them.

The left brain, in contrast, processes information in a linear manner and from a part to a whole. It takes every piece of information, lines them up and then arranges them into a logical order before forming conclusions. It also processes in sequence, so tasks are finished in order. Left-brained people easily learn things in a sequence as they apply linear thinking. The left side of the brain processes symbols including letters, words and mathematical notations. Left-brained people are known to easily cope with mathematical and linguistic tasks and they have excellent verbal skills.

What Causes Pain In Right Side Of Head

1. Trigeminal Neuralgia

One of the biggest nerves within a person’s head is known as the trigeminal nerve. Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition which affects this nerve, causing severe and chronic pain, usually experienced in episodes lasting around two minutes. This severe pain of the face or head can at times be debilitating. The condition is caused by the wearing away of the trigeminal nerve’s protective myelin sheath, due to consistent compression from blood vessels exiting the brain stem.

2. Temporal Arteritis

This condition refers to arteries that bring blood into the head become damaged or inflamed. This condition has sometimes been attributed to serious infections and the heavy use of antibiotic medication, or deficient immune response. A common symptom of this condition is pain in right side of head, and temporal arteritis mainly affects people who are aging over 50.

3. Tension Headaches

This form of a headache is the most common and is experienced by many people at some time in one’s life. They often do not last very long, although in some cases they can last for a week or more. A common symptom of tension headaches is achy, dull pain, a feeling of pressure in the head, tightness on forehead, side of the head, or back of the head. Tension headache can also cause tenderness of your shoulder muscles or scalp.

4. Migraines

5. Cluster Headaches

Children With A Strong Left Brain Function Typically Perform Well Academically But May Struggle Socially And Behaviorally

Our brains consist of two sides or hemispheres. Children with behavioral, academic, social, or other challenges often have an imbalance where they predominantly use one side of the brain. This causes one side of the brain to be stronger, while the other side develops more slowly and is weaker.

The left hemisphere of the brain controls learning and information processing. Children who have stronger left-brain functions tend to be more analytical in their thinking and typically perform well academically. They may have a great ability to memorize large amounts of data, have a large vocabulary, and are detail-oriented.

Is it true that when we use our left hand, the right side ...

This infographic explains how each side of the brain works, and how they affect behavior and personalities.

For example, someone who is left-side dominant is likely to be an A-type personality.

These people love order, having their days mapped out, and their feelings in check. Right-side thinkers tend to be more impulsive and emotional.

Independance Motivation And Hope

My son Sharat suffered a severe traumatic brain injury 23 years ago leaving him with Aphasia and right sided weakness from his vision, hearing to his limbs. The lockdown in June was a great challenge for him as his caregivers stopped coming, no gym workouts and no outings for a coffee.

Being his mother and primary carer I feared that this was a hotbed for depression. I scoured the net and chanced upon FlintRehab. As there was a trial period it was safe for us to risk getting it across to Auckland.

His OT checked it out and felt that it was ideal. I can honestly second this.

He enjoys working on it and now after three months can do it on his own. His left hand helps his right hand. The FitMi video explains and shows him what to do, it gives him marks and applauds him too!!

He has to use both sides of his brain. The caregivers are OT students who returned enjoy working on it with him.

In three months there motivation built up in him with a drive to use his right hand. There is definitely a slight improvement in his right hand.

This encourages him as well as the caregivers to try harder. His overall mood is upbeat. He enjoys it, so much so, that it doesnt matter if his caregiver is away.

FitMi is a blessing.

Right Brain Hemisphere Vs Left Brain Hemisphere

The left brain hemisphere is needed for rational thinking and logical skills such as mathematics and language. On the other hand, the right side of the brain is responsible for creative activities like arts and connecting to others in an emotional way. So, a person who is left brain dominant is logical while the right brain dominant is more emotional.

How Does The Nervous System Work

The basic workings of the nervous system depend a lot on tiny cells called neurons. The brain has billions of them, and they have many specialized jobs. For example, sensory neurons send information from the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin to the brain. Motor neurons carry messages away from the brain to the rest of the body.

All neurons relay information to each other through a complex electrochemical process, making connections that affect the way you think, learn, move, and behave.

Intelligence, learning, and memory. As you grow and learn, messages travel from one neuron to another over and over, creating connections, or pathways, in the brain. It’s why driving takes so much concentration when someone first learns it, but later is second nature: The pathway became established.

In young children, the brain is highly adaptable. In fact, when one part of a young child’s brain is injured, another part often can learn to take over some of the lost function. But as you age, the brain has to work harder to make new neural pathways, making it harder to master new tasks or change set behavior patterns. That’s why many scientists believe it’s important to keep challenging the brain to learn new things and make new connections it helps keeps the brain active over the course of a lifetime.

    The Senses

Smell. Olfactory cells in the mucous membranes lining each nostril react to chemicals you breathe in and send messages along specific nerves to the brain.

    Exercise One: Drawing Upside Down

Drawing upside down is a common exercise art students are asked to work on in order to improve observational skills and help switch from the logical mode to the creative mode .

One of the exercises in Betty Edwards’ wonderful book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is to copy a sketch of Picasso’s “Portrait of Igor Stravinsky,” but draw it upside down. I was able to do it quite well the right way up but was surprised how much easier it was when I turned the original drawing upside down. The point of the exercise is to draw what we actually see and to discourage us from focusing on recognizable shapes that our brain interprets from its stored concept of that shape. It is hard to switch off our logical mode completely, so here are a few tips that may help you complete this exercise:

    • Focus on separate lines and how they relate to those around them rather than look at the whole shape.
    • Look at blank space around the lines to get a more accurate placement of the those lines.
    • If you can’t stop seeing recognizable shapes, focus on one part of the sketch and place a piece of paper over your original to cover parts that you aren’t sketching. Once you are done with that section, move the paper to uncover the next section.

These are the tips that have worked for me. Why don’t you take the time to give it a try now.

What Are Some Characteristics Of The Left Side Of The Brain

People are often categorized either as left-brained and right-brained, meaning one side of their brain is dominant.

In this article, we will explore specifically the left brain characteristics, what they are, what it means to be a left-brain person, and how you can align your left brain using your knowledge, skills, and talents to reach your brains full potential.

    Dominant Hemispheres Dominant Hands

Studying such groups of lesion patients, then, helped neuroscientists discover that certain cognitive functions like language are localized primarily to one side. This assignment of different functions to the two different hemispheres is known as lateralization. When it comes to our senses and actions, in particular, the two sides of the brain do process different sets of information.

The left side of space is represented primarily in the right hemisphere, and vice versa. This means that your right hand is controlled by the left side of your brain and what you see in your left visual field is projected to the back of the right side of your cerebral cortex. Its this fact that some acting coaches may use to justify a technique designed to make a person more creative. Engage the left side of your body, they say, and youll tap into your creative right brain. But there are a few assumptions that such an explanation glosses over, most of which arent true.

Just like you have a dominant hand, most likely you also have a dominant hemisphereor, because you have a dominant hemisphere, you also have a dominant hand. Neuroscientists are still working out the details of how related the lateralization of cognition and handedness might be and how they develop, and the story is getting more complicated by the day.
