Are You Right Or Left Brain Dominance ? Personality Test

In the 1960s, these initial observations exploded both into the scientific literature and in the public sphere when some impressive experiments were performed. It was during this decade that researchers including Roger Sperry and Michael Gazzaniga were experimenting to find ways to treat severe epilepsy.

There was a class of patients whose seizures resisted treatments like psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic drugs. No matter the treatment, these people would have frequent and debilitating seizures. It was no way to live.

Gazzaniga and Sperry and others explored additional treatments. One treatment was to sever the part of the brain that connected the right and left hemispheres. That part of the body that connects the two sides of a healthy brain is called the corpus callosum. In these surgeries, surgeons simply cut the corpus callosum, turning what was once a single operating brain essentially into two separate ones. The whole prospect may have given others the creeps, but the surgeons had some success in treating epilepsy, so surgeries were performed.

It was from studies like this that scientists became aware of some of the regional differences present in the functioning of the brain. In fact, there is an absolutely fascinating body of scientific work done by studying these split-brain individuals. Actually, the study of how specific brain damage affects the abilities of individuals is incredibly interesting.

Whats Really Happening On Each Side Of The Brain

Its not all fantasy. Certain areas of the brain do manage particular functions, such as movement and sight. For example, the left side of your brain controls your right arms and legs, and vice versa.

In the 1800s, neurologists Broca and Wernicke determined that their patients who were having trouble communicating had damage to the left temporal lobes, which suggested that the left brain controlled language, as explained by TedEd.

Additionally, Nobel Prize-winning research by Roger Sperry demonstrated in the 1960s that each hemisphere of the brain specializes in certain tasks. By studying epilepsy patients who have undergone a procedure that separates the left and right hemispheres of the brain, Sperry determined the left side of the brain handles analytical and verbal tasks, while the right half takes care of the spatial perception tasks and contributes emotional context to language.

Sperry explained, The great pleasure and feeling in my right brain is more than my left brain can find the words to tell you,’ according to Nobelprize.org.

The results of this study and others have been misunderstood to link brain lateralization with individual personality traits, such as left brained people being logical and right brained people being perceptive. But according to Harvard Health blog, if you performed a CT scan, MRI or autopsy on the brain of a mathematician and compared it to the brain of an artist, you probably wouldnt see a difference.

Why Is It Wrong

While social media quizzes might be fun to do, there is no scientific evidence that individuals use one half of their brain more than the other or that an imbalance in the two sides explains individuality. In fact, it would be really inefficient to use only half of the brain. A group of neuroscientists at the University of Utah had more than 1,000 people undergo brain scans while they were either lying still or reading. While the scientists did find that certain brain functions are more lateralized, they found no evidence of individuals having stronger left- or right-brain networks. Therefore, the left-brain/right-brain idea is considered a neuromyth.

Exercises To Improve Your Left Brain

Characteristics of Left Brain Dominant Students
  • Mental exercises: Since the left side of the brain is better with words and numbers, simple brain games and exercises such as Sudoku and crossword puzzles can help improve these skills.
  • Physical exercises: Exercising the right side of your body will stimulate the left side of your brain , so simple exercises like breathing through one nostril can awaken your brain.
  • Listening to music: A 2008 study on music and brain activity has shown that listening to music can improve verbal and memory skills.

So, no matter how good we are in specific parts of our talents granted by either side of the brain, finding a balance between the two can help unleash the full potential of our minds.

Left Brain Vs Right Brain

By Eagle Gamma, published May 18, 2021

The brain consists of twin halves, a left hemisphere alongside a nearly symmetrical right hemisphere.

Hemispheric lateralization is the idea that both hemispheres are functionally different and that certain mental processes andbehaviors are mainly controlled by one hemisphere rather than the other.

The left hemisphere controls the right hand side of the body and receives information from the right visual field controlling speech, language and recognition of words, letters and numbers.

The right hemisphere controls the left hand side of the body and receives information from the left visual field controlling creativity, context and recognition of faces, places and objects.

According to the left-brain, right-brain dominance theory the left-side of the brain is considered to be adept at tasks which are considered logical, rational, calculating.By contrast, the right side of the brain is best at artistic, creative, and spontaneous tasks

The brain has two hemispheres that are two identical-appearing halves. The functions of the right hemisphere and the left hemisphere virtually mirror each other, with the right side of the brain controlling the left half of the body’s movement, sensation, vision, and hearing, while the left side controls the right half of these functions.

How Does This Neuromyth Impact Education

While the idea that people are more left-brained or right-brained may seem harmless, there are some real concerns about the existence of this myth in educators and students alike. Educators are increasingly encouraged to attend courses on brain-based learning. These courses often illustrate how ingrained these neuromyths have become. For example, some brain-based learning courses encourage educators to identify students as left-brained or right-brained and to adjust their teaching approach for these different learning styles. As a result, many teachers believe that this is a valid, scientifically backed idea. For example, in a sample of 242 teachers, 90 percent agreed with the statement differences in left-brain right-brain can help explain individual differences amongst learners. This is alarming given that this belief may influence the way in which teachers instruct specific students or groups of students and result in unconscious biases about a given students academic abilities .

What Does Left Brain Dominant Mean

Left and Right Brain Dominance

A person who is left brain dominant can be:

  • Business analysts

Likewise, here are some tips for left brain dominant students:

  • Study in a quiet room to avoid any distractions.
  • If you like to take the lead in study groups, you might enjoy volunteer work.
  • Participate in the debate team, science fair, or math league.
  • You may enjoy non-fiction books more compared to fiction.
  • You may be more comfortable with factual questions and assignments, as opposed to open-ended questions.
  • Keep your room organized and maintain order in your personal space.
  • Try to refrain from arguing with your teachers, even if you disagree.
  • When choosing assignments, side with analytical essays instead of creative writing.

Are All Left Brain Dominant People Also Left-Handed?

Thats another question we always get when it comes to left and right brain dominance…

In general, 70-90% of people are right-handed, and it is mainly because of their genetics. However, it is observed that especially kids are able to learn to use the other side while doing some sports like tennis or baseball, so handedness can be improved as well.

According to theconversation.com, our brains right hemisphere controls the left side of our body and vice versa. Around 95% of right-handers are observed to be left brain dominant.

What Are The Differences Between The Left Brain And Right Brain

Many neuroscientists consider the concept of purely left-brain vs right-brain characteristics a myth. There are numerous theories and concepts that exist to explain how the right and left hemispheres of the human brain function. Many of which, have merits, and limitations.

Researchers Michael Gazzaniga and Roger Sperry proposed the concept of lateralization. In lateralization the left hemisphere and right hemispheres of the brain have very different functions, but they communicate with each other through their physical connections. An example of lateralization is language. For most people language function is located in the left hemisphere of the brain, particularly for right-handed people. The foundation for this split-brain theory often is based on research that has been performed on patients who had their right and left hemispheres of their brain surgically disconnected to treat severe epilepsy. Split-brain theory describes the left side of the brain as giving rational orders to the right side of the brain, and the right hemisphere as giving emotionally based commands.

Brain lateralization occurs in certain brain functions. In brain lateralization, certain regions of the brain perform specific functions. Many recent studies have shown that the right and left halves of the brain mostly are used equally, which shows the functional and physical connections between both the right and left hemispheres of the brain.

What Are Characteristics Of Right Brain And Left Brain

Keeping this in view, what is the difference between right and left side of brain?

The left side of the brain is responsible for controlling the right side of the body. It also performs tasks that have to do with logic, such as in science and mathematics. On the other hand, the right hemisphere coordinates the left side of the body, and performs tasks that have do with creativity and the arts.

Similarly, what is a right brain person like? The right hemisphere is associated with creativity, emotion and intuition. It also controls the left side of the body, so right-brained people are often left-handed. Rightbrain dominant people are characterized as artistic, innovative and often random.

Moreover, what percentage of the population is right brain dominant?

âMore than 160,000 Americans used our brain test. The results showed that 37 percent of Americans are leftbrained, while only 29 percent are rightbrained. In 34 percent of participants, the two hemispheres exert equal influence on decision-making.

Which side of brain is more powerful?

Language tends to be on the left, attention more on the right. But people don’t tend to have a stronger left– or right-sided brain network. It seems to be determined more connection by connection,” explained the study’s lead author Dr. Jeff Anderson.

Scientific View Of Humanity

Modern science has a more prosaic, although no less extraordinary, view of humanity, properly placing homo sapiens as a single unique twig on the vast tree of life. It is unique for a reason. For all the connections to the rest of life on the planet, there is no doubting human uniqueness. For humans alone have looked to the sky and wondered about their place in the cosmos.

Humans alone have thought about thought. And, taking humans down a peg or two, humans alone have worried whether these pants have made their butt look big or whether anyone could tell that they were wearing a toupee.

Although these thoughts are not always grand and noble, they are thoughts. The ability to think in highly complex ways is what distinguishes humans from other species.

Historical And Religious Views Of Humanity

Common barriers to data

Humans are an introspective species, one might even say self-absorbed. It has long been believed that humanity is effectively at the center of the universe, whether because of the early geocentric ideas of Ptolemy or simply because humans are thought better than other species. It is an idea that even enters into some religions.

The Christian Bible does say that humans were to have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over the Earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the Earth.

While there are differences of opinion when it comes to brain hemisphere dominance, one thing seems clear: there are some students who are more comfortable with logic and reasoning than they are with creativity and intuition. These preferences are characteristic of people who are sometimes called left brain dominant.

Are you very organized? Do you believe that there is a right way and a wrong way to do things? Do you enjoy math homework more than English homework? If so, you may be left-brain dominant.

    Left Brain Right Brain Theory

According to the theory of left-brain or right-brain dominance, each side of the brain controls different types of thinking. Additionally, people are said to prefer one type of thinking over the other. For example, a person who is left-brained is often said to be more logical, analytical, and objective, while a person who is right-brained is said to be more intuitive, thoughtful, and subjective.

In psychology, the theory is based on what is known as the lateralization of brain function. So does one side of the brain really control specific functions? Are people either left-brained or right-brained? In the case of brain anatomy and function, it is true that our brains are divided into two hemispheres, left and right. Each hemisphere is capable of generating wakeful consciousness by itself.

It is also shown that the dominant brain type has a significant role when it comes to studies. Some students will do better with numbers and others with creative essays, depending on their dominant brain type.

Each brain hemisphere controls the movement of the opposite side of the body. In left-handed people, the motor cortex in the right hemisphere is dominant for fine motor behaviors, such as writing with a pencil. The reverse is true for right-handed peoplethe left hemisphere is stronger when it comes to such movements.

    Characteristics Of Right Brain Students

Do People Really Have Right or Left Brain Personalities?
    • Good with people
    • Good on writing fiction, draw, or play music
    • Fun and witty personality
    • Some students may lose track on time and lose notes
    • Philosophical

In general the right dominated students enjoy the social aspects in class and might get bored easily. An advice for teachers is to keep these students activated, give them the opportunity to write assignments or essays in creative ways.

Some advice for the student is to try to be more organized, make outlines to organize the thoughts and write down directions, complete started projects. .

Q: What are right-brain thinkers good at?

As per the common hypothesis, right-brained people are believed to be more creative, emotional, and intuitive.

Q: Is there a dominant side of the brain?

Despite human nature and behaviors, there is no reason to believe that the domination of one side of the brain is the reason behind someones personality traits.

    Lateralization Of Brain Function

The human brain is split into two distinct cerebral hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum. The hemispheres exhibit strong bilateral symmetry regariding structure as well as function. For instance, structurally, the lateral sulcus generally is longer in the left hemisphere than in the right hemisphere, and functionally, Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area are located in the left cerebral hemisphere for about 95% of right-handers, but about 70% of left-handers. Neuroscientist and Nobel laureate Roger Sperry has contributed significantly to the research of lateralization and split-brain function.

Is Hemispheric Dominance Different Between People

Hemispheric dominance varies from one person to another. The hemisphere of the brain used in every activity is not always the same for every person. Some experts believed that the activities of the brain are influenced by the persons right-handedness or left-handedness.

Understanding which part of the brain is dominant in a person is essential in determining which learning style is more effective. Left hemisphere dominant people are visual learners. On the other hand, right-hemisphere dominant people are auditory learners.

    Sperrys Split Brain Theory

Right brain, Brain learning, Brain diagram

The concept of left-brain and right-brain thinking originated in the late 1960s from the research of Roger W Sperry. Sperry developed what is known as the Split Brain Theory. His Split Brain Theory divides the brain into two hemispheres right and left. His research found that each hemisphere is specialized for specific behaviors and controls different types of thinking.

Based on his research, Sperry found that the left side of the brain tends to control many aspects of language and logic, while the right side tends to control spatial information and visual comprehension.
