The Best Jobs For Right
In 1981, Roger Sperry won the Nobel Prize for his work on the right-brain vs. left-brain theory. Sperry theorized that the right side of the brain was responsible for controlling emotions, motivation, and creativity while the left side controlled functions such as language, reasoning, and logic.
Even if youre convinced that you arent a right-brain or a left-brain thinker, you might find yourself drawn to right-brained careers. These are roles that people associate with creative, but not every right-brained job is in art.
Right-brainers dont get lost in details they naturally visualize the whole picture and love work that requires visionary planning, motivating other people, and thinking outside the box. Right-brained people enjoy trying new ways of doing things and looking at problems from different angles. Many of the worlds most exciting innovations have been the result of the creative thinking power of right-brain individuals.

What Does The Left Side Of The Brain Control
There is still not enough evidence to determine the exact functions of this side of the brain. Because of this, hundreds of scientists are dedicated to finding answers.
This doesnt mean, however, that we dont know anything the facts we know are still impressive! The left side of the brain is responsible for processing and accomplishing hundreds of operations.
First of all, we should mention the various language skills that the left brain is responsible for, like forming words, understanding phrases, and constructing sentences. Almost every action connected with languageboth spoken and writtenis a function of the brains left side. For example, writing is a typical left-brain trait for both left- and right-handed people. Did you know that the left brain controls the right side of the body? Its true! Yet studies have shown that both left-handed and right-handed people use the left hemisphere when they write.
When discussing the left brain vs. right brain, its essential to talk about logic and analytical thinking. Analytical thinking is a mental process that starts when you investigate a problem by logically breaking it down into smaller issues or steps. By doing so, you begin to develop solutions not by intuition but instead by logic.
Typical left brain questions are:
Right Brain & Left Brain Functions List
Based on hundreds of experiments, scientists have made a list of features that are typical for each of the two hemispheres. The list above features just some of the everyday skills that the brain shows a left or right hemisphere preference for.
However, in everyday life, we use both hemispheres equally. How do we know? Neuroscientists have been studying brain injuries for many years. We know that if the left hemisphere is damaged, it leads to speaking, understanding, and coordination problems. When the brains right hemisphere is damaged, the patient has difficulties with visual perception, impulsiveness, and slow learning.

More On The Brain & Personality Type
Introverted Thinking is equally left-brained and right-brained. Especially in tandem with Ne, Ti can operate as a conceptual and categorizing function, as commonly seen in INTP philosophers. However, Ti also plays an important role in on-the-fly logical and kinesthetic processing, as evidenced in ISTP athletes or mechanics. Extraverted Feeling also straddles the two hemispheres. On the one hand, it brokers objective and explicit feeling judgments, as seen for instance, in its championing of collective values and social norms. But like its introverted counterpart, Fe also deals heavily in emotional currency, which falls under right hemispheric domain.
What about intuition? Insofar as intuition is viewed as an instinctual or implicit way of knowing, we might view it as right-brained, as many theorists have seen fit to do. However, Jungian intuition is typically associated with ideas and abstractions, which could lead one to associate it with the left hemisphere. If pushed to assign intuition to a brain hemisphere, we might be wise to follow Lenore Thomsons lead and associate Introverted Intuition with the left hemisphere and Extraverted Intuition with the right. There is a sense in which the Ni worldview is more stable and fixed, which is consistent with the left brains predilection for order and predictability. Although Ne also deals in abstractions, it is ideationally more promiscuous, relativistic, and non-committal.
Where Did The Myth Come From
The concept of left-brained and right-brained individuals appears to stem from research in the 1960s on split-brain patients, whose corpus callosum had been separated. The research revealed that patients responded in different ways to stimuli such as images, depending on which brain hemisphere perceived them.

What Are The Differences Between The Left Brain And Right Brain
Many neuroscientists consider the concept of purely left-brain vs right-brain characteristics a myth. There are numerous theories and concepts that exist to explain how the right and left hemispheres of the human brain function. Many of which, have merits, and limitations.
Researchers Michael Gazzaniga and Roger Sperry proposed the concept of lateralization. In lateralization the left hemisphere and right hemispheres of the brain have very different functions, but they communicate with each other through their physical connections. An example of lateralization is language. For most people language function is located in the left hemisphere of the brain, particularly for right-handed people. The foundation for this split-brain theory often is based on research that has been performed on patients who had their right and left hemispheres of their brain surgically disconnected to treat severe epilepsy. Split-brain theory describes the left side of the brain as giving rational orders to the right side of the brain, and the right hemisphere as giving emotionally based commands.
Brain lateralization occurs in certain brain functions. In brain lateralization, certain regions of the brain perform specific functions. Many recent studies have shown that the right and left halves of the brain mostly are used equally, which shows the functional and physical connections between both the right and left hemispheres of the brain.
Qualities Of Left Brain Thinkers
This brain is also referred to as the analytical side. Left side brainers are generally goal-oriented, organized, critical thinkers and demonstrate the following qualities:
- Brilliant language and comprehension

What Is The Main Part Of The Brain
Before we discuss what the main differences are between the left and the right brain, we need to understand what parts of the brain exactly we are talking about.
The largest part of the brain is called the Cerebrum. Its divided into two sections called the cerebral hemispheres or as we call it, right and left brain.
The right cerebral hemisphere controls the left side of the body. While the left cerebral hemisphere controls the right side of the body.
The left and right cerebral hemispheres develop thoughts, storing memories, and cognitive functions.
How The Left And Right Hemispheres Work Together
Both sides of the brain collaborate to handle major functions such as language processing and vision. But they are also, to a degree, specialized. Some areas of the brain are more active than others during particular tasks, and one hemisphere may be more involved than the other in specific parts of a larger mental operation.
For example, Brocas area and Wernickes area are both linked to language and are most commonly located on the left side of the brain. Yet the right hemisphere is also known to play a role in language processing. Meanwhile, the limbic systemwhich includes the amygdalae and hippocampi and is involved in functions such as emotion and memoryresides on both sides of the brain.

Sperrys Split Brain Theory
The concept of left-brain and right-brain thinking originated in the late 1960s from the research of Roger W Sperry. Sperry developed what is known as the Split Brain Theory. His Split Brain Theory divides the brain into two hemispheres right and left. His research found that each hemisphere is specialized for specific behaviors and controls different types of thinking.
Based on his research, Sperry found that the left side of the brain tends to control many aspects of language and logic, while the right side tends to control spatial information and visual comprehension.
Left Brain Vs Right Brain Stroke
The brain is a very complex organ consisting of many different lobes and folds, each area responsible for a specific function or ability. A stroke that occurs in one area of the brain may affect the body differently than one that occurs in another area. The three main components of the brain are the brainstem, cerebellum, and cerebrum. Since the brainstem is responsible for involuntary processes like breathing and heart rate, a stroke in the brainstem is often life-threatening. The cerebellum coordinates voluntary motor movements like coordination, balance, and speech. However, it is not very common for strokes to occur in either the brainstem or cerebellum. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and is composed of the right and left hemispheres. It is responsible for higher cognitive functions such as interpreting sensory information and speech, along with reasoning, emotions, learning, and fine control of motor movements. Most ischemic strokes affect the cerebrum and can be divided into the categories of left brain stroke and right brain stroke.
What Does Each Side of the Brain Control?
Although every stroke is unique, they tend to affect people in similar ways based on which side of the brain it affects. Each side of the brain is responsible for controlling different parts of the body as well as different tasks.
The Left Brain Controls:
- Facial weakness or problems swallowing
- Memory loss

Takeaway From Left And Right Brain Difference
Despite there being a huge difference between the two sides of our brains, they dont work independently or separately from each other. The different parts of our brain are connected with tiny nerves that create an information path.
Our brain is so adaptable to change and we are continuing to recognize its abilities and capabilities. The fact that someone has a left dominant brain doesnt mean that the right brain doesnt work. Whether or not you are performing a creative action, you receive inputs from both sides of your brain separately and also together.
Box 1 The Genetics Of Handedness And Cerebral Asymmetry
Linkage analyses have often revealed candidate laterality genes, but all too often these fail in follow-up analysisa common problem in the search for genes related to human behavior. Part of the problem is the sheer immensity of the genome, which means that candidates are likely to surface by chance, and the problem is compounded by the likelihood of a strong chance element in the determination of handedness itself. With appropriate statistical control, several large-scale genome-wide studies have failed to reveal any single locus to be significantly associated with handedness ,, including one study based on a large sample of twins, which also failed specifically to support the single-gene model developed by McManus , or weaker versions of that model. The authors of one study estimate that as many as 40 different loci may be involved , but note that it would be difficult to distinguish multilocus models from a single-gene model, such as that of McManus, in terms of handedness pedigrees.

Differences between right brain vs. left brain characteristics and functions
While no single theory completely explains the multiple complexities of brain functions, neuroimaging techniques show some distinct differences between the left and right brain hemispheres, which is referred to as lateralization.
Examples of these differences include language function in the Broca surface area and Wernicke area of the left side of the brain, and emotional and nonverbal functions in the right side of the brain.
The areas responsible for language tends to be on the dominant side of the brain, and opposite of the handedness of a person. For example, if you are left handed, the language function areas of your brain are more likely to be located on the right side of your brain. Moreover, if you are right-handed, your speech functions are more likely to be located on the left side of your brain.
Left-brain characteristics and functions
Left-brain functions are thought to include:
- Understanding the sum of any situation, getting “the big picture
- Large muscle movements like walking
- Sensing where ones body is in space
According to neuroscience research, the left side of the brain or hemisphere:
- Is positively stimulated by new experiences.
- Controls the immune system.
- Is responsible for the involuntary bodily functions, for example, breathing, heart rate, and digestion.

Left Brain vs Right Brain
Right and left brains are nearly equal in size and functions but there are certain functions particularly done by each side. The special functions of right brain are random, intuitive, holistic synthesizing, subjective and looks at wholes. Left brains special functions are Logical, sequential, rational, analytical, objective, and looks at parts.
Brain is formed by right and left hemispheres. Brain is part of the central nervous system. Brain controls the muscle movements, sensations and memory etc. It controls the respiration, body temperature, hunger and thirst. But these are controlled by brain stem, which is below the right and left hemispheres. In general the frontal lobe of the brain is in charge for the memory. The middle part has two areas. The middle front part will sense the sensation and called sensory area. The area behind that is motor area. Motor area controls the voluntary muscles movement. Usually the human right side of the body is controlled by left side of the brain and left side controlled by right side .
Even though the right and left lobes are nearly equal in size and functions, there are special functions that are carried out by dominant lobe. Some duties are carried out by non dominant lobe. Most of the individuals have left dominant lobes. So we will see how the special functions are divided.
Right brain: Random, intuitive, holistic synthesizing, subjective and looks at wholes.

Is It Better To Be Left
After centuries of studying the brain, neuroscientists have come up with an answer. Theres no difference if youre more left-brained or right-brained.
Its best to meet in the middle and exercise both the left and right sides of your brain.
People who use both their right and left the brain to solve problems are able to successfully analyze situations taking into account emotions, as well as logical reasoning.
Those who use their left and right brain actively have a broad range of interests. For example, someone who is a left brain thinker like a scientist or mathematician will enjoy painting and playing the guitar on the weekends.
We can say the same for someone who is a right-brain thinker like a dancer or artist. As one of their hobbies, they might learn foreign languages and solve math problems.
In sum, its essential for both the left and right brain hemispheres to work together. They both need to find balance because one cant function without the other.
Historical And Religious Views Of Humanity
Humans are an introspective species, one might even say self-absorbed. It has long been believed that humanity is effectively at the center of the universe, whether because of the early geocentric ideas of Ptolemy or simply because humans are thought better than other species. It is an idea that even enters into some religions.
The Christian Bible does say that humans were to have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over the Earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the Earth.

What Defines Left And Right Brained People
The human brain is the command centre of our bodies. It contains roughly 86 billion nerve cells, can generate up to 50,000 thoughts per day, and it can process information faster than a Formula One car can travel!
“Brain information can travel up to 268 mph!”
On top of all of this, it is widely believed that the structure of our brain plays a key role in shaping the different characteristics of our personalities.
Your brain has two sides, which are known as hemispheres. The left hemisphere controls the right side of your body, dealing with logical thought and linguistic functions. The right hemisphere controls the left side of your body, dealing with things such as our imagination, spacial orientation and intuition.
Extensive research into the two sides of the brain is what inspired Neuropsychologist, Roger W Sperry to develop his left brain/right brain theory.
Sperry developed the left brain/right brain theory in 1960. He believed that each human brain is either right or left side dominant. Each side of the brain controls different types of thinking and therefore different personality traits. He believed that some individuals utilise both sides of their brains equally, but most people have a tendency to think in either a more left or right brain way.
So, what is the difference between Left and Right-brainers?
At Habit Action we have a balance of left and right brainers in the team.
