What Are The Two Brains Believed To Do

What’s the Difference Between the Right Brain and Left Brain?

This is an idea of two halves : firstly that there is a difference between left brain thinking and right brain thinking, and secondly that individuals differ in the extent to which they favour either the left brain or the right brain. According to this view, the left brain is the analytical, logical, verbal half while the right brain is the creative, emotional, visuo-spatial half individuals who have one side more active than the other are believed show corresponding cognitive styles and personalities.

Sperrys Split Brain Theory

The concept of left-brain and right-brain thinking originated in the late 1960s from the research of Roger W Sperry. Sperry developed what is known as the Split Brain Theory. His Split Brain Theory divides the brain into two hemispheres right and left. His research found that each hemisphere is specialized for specific behaviors and controls different types of thinking.

Based on his research, Sperry found that the left side of the brain tends to control many aspects of language and logic, while the right side tends to control spatial information and visual comprehension.

There Are Differences Between The Hemispheres Though Right

Yes.

You might not have a more dominant half, but your brain really is split into two hemispheres, left and right.

And the left and right hemispheres are not the same. They are highly similar and redundant, though. Most processes that you’d find on the left side also take place on the right, and vice-versa.

The book “Disorders of the Nervous System: A Primer” by Dartmouth neurologists Dr. Alexander Reeves and Dr. Rand Swenson, quotes Dr. Harold Wolff one of the great brain scientists of the 20th century as saying that both sides of the brain have “the capacity to express appropriate feelings, appetites and drives the capacity learning, memory, logic, etc. the capacity to maintain appropriate thresholds and tolerance for frustration and failure, and to recover promptly from their effects the capacity to maintain effective and well-modulated defense reactions .”

That’s some dense text, but the point is simple: Just about everything about your brain that makes you human exists on both sides of the organ.

Need proof? If you remove a hemisphere from the brain of a 3-month-old baby a surgery that doctors sometimes perform in cases of severe epilepsy and other disorders, according to the Cleveland Clinic that baby can still grow up with normal memories and a normal personality. Surgeons pulled off the surgery, known as a hemispherectomy, “hundreds of times” in the last century, according to Scientific American.

So, what’s the difference between the two hemispheres?

Children With Weakened Left Brain Function Are Imaginative And Social But May Struggle Academically In A Traditional Classroom Environment

Our brains consist of two sides or hemispheres. Children with behavioral, academic, social, or other challenges often have an imbalance in hemispheric brain communication – what we refer to as functional disconnection syndrome, or where one hemisphere is processing information too slowly. This causes one side of the brain to be stronger, while the other side develops more slowly and is weaker.

The right hemisphere of the brain controls sensory processing and expression. Children who are left brain weak are often very visual, spontaneous, emotional and intuitive but may struggle academically with memorizing facts and paying attention to details.

New Ideas And Reality

a muslim homeschool: Discovering right brain learning part ...

Left brains are not famous for creative, ground-breaking ideas, but then again we arent really sure how the two sides of the brains work or dont work together. What we think we know is that the right brain can generate a new idea more efficiently and perhaps to a more intense degree than the left brain, whereas the left brain can take an idea and run with it. In other words, the right brain can initiate something but the left brain can handle the planning, processing, logic, etc. Total success is not possible without both sides of the brain firing on all cylinders.

The left brain also seems to have a propensity for reality. You would not expect to find many metaphysical wanderings in the left brain. While this might limit the left brain in terms of considering all possibilities, it also prevents the left brain from getting lost in the impossible, unrealistic or off-topic. The left brain prefers to stay rooted in and focused on reality. This is the epitome of the left brain relying on logic, sequence, critical reasoning and self-sufficiency.

Mixing Fact With Fiction

Its true each hemisphere of the brain controls different functions, but this fact doesnt relate to personality. The misleading idea of left vs. right brained people originates from science and has become fictionalized over time.

Take TheStrange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, for example. Robert Louis Stevensons fictional characters represented the duality of human nature and explored the idea of a logical left brain competing with an emotional right brain .

People love to learn about their own psychology, and they crave definitive answers. We love classification schemes like astrology, Myers-Briggs and endless personality quizzes, even though, according to Inc., calling yourself left brained or right brained is totally meaningless.

Are There Really Right

verifiedThe Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica

Are you a logical, precise thinker, or would you say that youre more free-spirited and artistic? If youre the former, somebodys probably told you at some point that youre a left-brained person, and if youre the latter, right-brained. The notion that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical half and that our individual traits are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. Theres even a small industry devoted to this idea. There are self-help books, personality tests, therapies, and educational materials that claim to help you optimize the functions of the stronger half of your brain, get in touch with the weaker half, or even make the two halves stop their incessant battling inside your skull so you can finally get some peace and quiet.

What Are The Characteristics Of Right Brain And Left Brain

Consequently, what is the difference between right and left side of brain?

The left side of the brain is responsible for controlling the right side of the body. It also performs tasks that have to do with logic, such as in science and mathematics. On the other hand, the right hemisphere coordinates the left side of the body, and performs tasks that have do with creativity and the arts.

Beside above, what are the characteristics of left brain dominant individuals? Characteristics of Left Brain Dominant Students

  • Work well with a daily task list.
  • Like to be the critic in class.
  • Feel naturally good at math or science.
  • Are rational and logical.
  • Perform research that is precise and well-documented.
  • Like to set goals.
  • Keep a tidy room.

Similarly one may ask, what is a right brain person like?

The right hemisphere is associated with creativity, emotion and intuition. It also controls the left side of the body, so right-brained people are often left-handed. Rightbrain dominant people are characterized as artistic, innovative and often random.

Which side of brain is more powerful?

Language tends to be on the left, attention more on the right. But people don’t tend to have a stronger left– or right-sided brain network. It seems to be determined more connection by connection,” explained the study’s lead author Dr. Jeff Anderson.

Similarities Between Left And Right Brain

Right Brain vs Left Brain
  • Left and right brain are the two hemispheres of the brain.
  • Each hemisphere can perform its functions independently from the other hemisphere.
  • However, both hemispheres are connected by a large number of nerve fibers that help to communicate with each other.
  • However, one hemisphere is dominant in each individual.
  • The dominant brain hemisphere determines the persons personality, thoughts, and behavior.
  • But any individual uses both hemispheres equally.
  • Each hemisphere controls the functions of the opposite side of the body due to the way of nerve innervation.

If youre like me, you learned that about 90% of people are right-handed and much of the reason is genetic. And thats true, although it remains a mystery why our genetic evolution led to so many more righties than lefties.

But for certain tasks, handedness can be “overcome.” For example, right-handed kids learning to play tennis, golf, or baseball can become successful hitting from “the other side.” It may be more a matter of how they are taught and what gets reinforced than about a hard-wired preference for one hand or the other.

According to recent research, the idea of people being “left-brained” or “right-brained” may also be less fixed than wed thought.

  • According to John McCrone, writing in the New Scientist magazine in July 2000,the whole notion of RB-LB dichotomies has been proven false by more recent brain scan research. The lateral functions as listed above are over simplifications of reality. Both hemispheres function together in complex ways, and in extreme cases, where half the brain is removed to treat epilepsy, persons still reflect LB and RB characteristics. McCrone calls the dichotomy simplistic at best and nonsense at worst.

  • Regardless of what John McCrone wrote about the LB-RB theory, there is still some validity to the model.

Whether some functions are physically left or right , we would be wise to follow the advise to incorporate more spatial and abstract subject in academic curriculum.

In addition, to enhance cross-hemispheric activity, regular use of Brian Gym will improve learning, and enhance thinking and communication skills.

  • I dont believe we can semegnt our brain physiology that easily in right and left. Many structures are unique to connect them both, and have many fuctions such as the Calous Body.I only believe that we have a different think rather than the rational, because when you listen to a song, you can reproduce it latter, and not even think about it, you just do it. Kind irrational huh? Maybe is our animal evidence

    More Similarities Than Differences

The primary division of labor between hemispheres is in the sensory and motor domain.

The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body.

Except for this type of basic sensory-motor separation, the two sides of the brain are much more similar to each other than they are different.

We know from neuroimaging and other neuroscientific methods that both sides participate in most tasks, especially complex ones involving creativity and logic.

Additionally, experimental studies have failed to characterize people into sub-groups according to a dominance of left- or right-sided brain networks .

This suggests that there is no real evidence that this factor influences personality of personal preference for specific types of cognitive tasks.

Historical And Religious Views Of Humanity

The Left Brain Vs Right Brain Confusion

Humans are an introspective species, one might even say self-absorbed. It has long been believed that humanity is effectively at the center of the universe, whether because of the early geocentric ideas of Ptolemy or simply because humans are thought better than other species. It is an idea that even enters into some religions.

The Christian Bible does say that humans were to have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over the Earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the Earth.

    What Is Right Brain

The right brain is the right hemisphere of the brain, which is responsible for creativity, intuition, and impulsiveness. It processes the information in whole concrete images, not step-by-step methods to reach the final conclusion. Therefore, it has difficulties in understanding parts of a whole image. Also, the right brain faces difficulties in sequential thinking and it has to be trained in sequencing skills with the use of visual images or concrete materials.

The right brain may have difficulties in working with measurements, time, size, fractions, money, word problems, algebra, and geometry. It may not follow oral instructions without a visual demonstration.

Whats The Difference Between The Right Brain And Left Brain

Difference Between Left and Right Brain. The main difference between left and right brain is that the left brain is more verbal, analytical and orderly whereas the right brain is more visual and intuitive. Furthermore, the left brain controls the functions of the right side of the body while the right brain controls the left side of the body.

Which Side Of The Brain Is Dominant

Differences between right brain vs. left brain characteristics and functions

While no single theory completely explains the multiple complexities of brain functions, neuroimaging techniques show some distinct differences between the left and right brain hemispheres, which is referred to as lateralization.

Examples of these differences include language function in the Broca surface area and Wernicke area of the left side of the brain, and emotional and nonverbal functions in the right side of the brain.

The areas responsible for language tends to be on the dominant side of the brain, and opposite of the handedness of a person. For example, if you are left handed, the language function areas of your brain are more likely to be located on the right side of your brain. Moreover, if you are right-handed, your speech functions are more likely to be located on the left side of your brain.

    Left-brain characteristics and functions

Left-brain functions are thought to include:

    • Understanding the sum of any situation, getting “the big picture
    • Large muscle movements like walking
    • Sensing where ones body is in space
    • Balance

According to neuroscience research, the left side of the brain or hemisphere:

    • Is positively stimulated by new experiences.
    • Controls the immune system.
    • Is responsible for the involuntary bodily functions, for example, breathing, heart rate, and digestion.

    Scientific View Of Humanity

The Difference Between Your Right and Left Brain

Modern science has a more prosaic, although no less extraordinary, view of humanity, properly placing homo sapiens as a single unique twig on the vast tree of life. It is unique for a reason. For all the connections to the rest of life on the planet, there is no doubting human uniqueness. For humans alone have looked to the sky and wondered about their place in the cosmos.

Humans alone have thought about thought. And, taking humans down a peg or two, humans alone have worried whether these pants have made their butt look big or whether anyone could tell that they were wearing a toupee.

Although these thoughts are not always grand and noble, they are thoughts. The ability to think in highly complex ways is what distinguishes humans from other species.

As fascinating as the difference between left and right brain thinking in the individual is, it becomes even more interesting when we look at how society has cycled between left and right brain thinking over the past 1,200 years. The metaphoric mind is a maverick. It is as wild and unruly as a child. It follows us doggedly and plagues us with its presence as we wander the contrived corridors of rationality. It is a metaphoric link with the unknown called religion that causes us to build cathedrals and the very cathedrals are built with rational, logical plans. When some personal crisis or the bewildering chaos of everyday life closes in on us, we often rush to worship the rationally-planned cathedral and ignore the religion. Albert Einstein called the intuitive or metaphoric mind a sacred gift. He added that the rational mind was a faithful servant. It is paradoxical that in the context of modern life we have begun to worship the servant and defile the divine. Bob Samples in The Metaphoric Mind: A Celebration of Creative Consciousness

I am indebted to Iain McGilchrist, author of The Master and his Emissary for his profound work which inspired these summaries.

    The Dangers Of These Misconceptions

Left Brain vs. Right Brain: Whatâs the Difference?

So-called left brained people are described as: logical, analytical, and detail-oriented. Their worldview is objective and factual, so they are good at math, engineering and other fact-based tasks and careers. Right brained people are considered: creative, perceptive, intuitive, freethinkers. Their worldview is subjective and expressive, so theyre destined for creative tasks and careers.

These distinctions may limit your potential. Yes, some people are especially logical or creative, but that doesnt mean one side of their brain is more dominant than the other. Many logical tasks require creativity, and creative works are often rooted in logic. Thinking of peoples brains and personalities in such a divisive framework is false and restricting. Embrace what youre good at and let all parts of the brain do the work.
