Where Did The Myth Come From
The concept of left-brained and right-brained individuals appears to stem from research in the 1960s on split-brain patients, whose corpus callosum had been separated. The research revealed that patients responded in different ways to stimuli such as images, depending on which brain hemisphere perceived them.
What Is Right Brain
The right brain is the right hemisphere of the brain, which is responsible for creativity, intuition, and impulsiveness. It processes the information in whole concrete images, not step-by-step methods to reach the final conclusion. Therefore, it has difficulties in understanding parts of a whole image. Also, the right brain faces difficulties in sequential thinking and it has to be trained in sequencing skills with the use of visual images or concrete materials.

Brain lateralization is the idea that some brain functionsrely more heavily on one hemisphere than on another. One example of this is when we process language. However, it has recently been that speech is processed in both hemispheres equally, so perhaps language is not as lateralized as we previously thought.
Likewise, it was believed that a left-handed persons brain was less lateralized for language development. That is, it was believed that these people would use more of the right brain hemisphere for language, contrary to the general right-handed population. It has been that this only happens in 1% of the left-handed population.
It was even found that the degree of lateralization of some brain functions may vary from individual to individual.
Our brain is lateralized in some of its functions, however, most of these happen in both hemispheres. If a brain region or even a whole hemisphere is damaged or destroyed, other neighboring areas or even the opposite hemisphere may, in some cases, take over the activity typically performed by the damaged region. When brain damage interferes in the connections between one area and another, alternative connections can be developed to bridge the difficulties. This is only possible thanks to the brains great ability to adapt, which is called brain plasticity.

Left-brained people often exhibit logical-mathematical intelligence, which is one of the nine intelligences defined by Howard Gardners theory of multiple intelligences. This enables them to be excellent mathematicians, scientists, and technicians.

You can also focus on crossing the midline of your body by touching one side of your body to the other, such as your left hand on your right knee. When doing so, your brain sends signals from one hemisphere to the other.
3. Alternate Nostril Breathing
This technique has been used by yogis throughout history to purify the nadis or energy channels in the body. The nasal cycle has been scientifically shown to be linked to the opposite hemispheric dominance.
When your right nostril is dominant, the EEG measured activity in the brain is greater in the left hemisphere of your brain and vice versa. When the nostril dominance switches, so does the activity of the brain hemisphere.

What were our results? We found that older adults who get more brain exercise see things faster on the left side of the screen, compared with the right side of the screen. The more brain exercise an older adult has gotten during his or her lifetime, the stronger the right hemisphere becomes.
This was an exciting result, because it suggests that brain exercise does strengthen the right hemisphere, and perhaps this is why brain exercise protects against Alzheimers disease.
What should we do next? This is only a small piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Now we know that the right hemisphere is stronger in older adults who get more brain exercise. The next question is which parts of the right hemisphere are most important? For this question, it would be very helpful to use an imaging device called an MRI machine to take pictures of the brain before, during, and after brain exercise. These pictures would give us more detailed knowledge about exactly what changes in the brain with brain exercise.

It seems to me that the left hemisphere is alive and well; the analytic community is firmly established, and indispensable, at the operating and middle levels of most organizations. Its real problems occur at the policy level. Here analysis must co-exist withperhaps even take its lead fromintuition, a fact that many analysts and planners have been slow to accept. To my mind, organizational effectiveness does not lie in that narrow-minded concept called rationality; it lies in a blend of clear-headed logic and powerful intuition. Let me illustrate this with two points.
- First, only under special circumstances should planners try to plan. When an organization is in a stable environment and has no use for a very creative strategythe telephone industry may be the best examplethen the development of formal, systematic strategic plans may be in order. But when the environment is unstable or the organization needs a creative strategy, then strategic planning may not be the best approach to strategy formulation, and planners have no business pushing the organization to use it.
